    Could you see yourself moving to an iPad only for editing your photos?

    • @elpagna
      @elpagna 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I would definitely! As an amateur photographer it's perfect for me! Still not sure if I should get the 11 or 13inches.
      Great video btw!

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@elpagna I mainly like the 11" because I use it for book reading but honestly you might want to look into the 12.9". Now that it's smaller I think it would be perfect for someone who doesn't have a laptop at all. Especially for photo editing.

      IMHO: I would opt for the larger real estate. Writing from my 2018 12.9-inch iPad Pro.🙂

      @@justsendit8506 How are you liking it so far? Are you upgrading from an older model? I upgraded from the First Generation 9.7 iPad Pro and OMG the speed difference!!! 😱😱😱

      @John Branch IV Photography: I upgraded from a 2017 iPad Pro 12.9-inch - same display size, but smaller footprint - lovin’ it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’m fine with no headphone jack since I use wireless. As far as USB-C, I have a really good (organized) tech kit with minimalist adaptors if/when needed. I already have an iPhone X, so as far as Face ID goes - it’s ON, baby!🤪

    Ok, so that was super dope and helpful. I just started working with Lightroom on the iPad Pro and I couldn’t figure out where the dang preset import button was. Watched this, learned, then learned about the little 10 point increment tip for adjustments. Awesome. Subbed and can’t wait to watch more of your work. I have been using the iPad Pro for my photo editing when away from home for over 2 years. While it has been challenging, especially with the first 12.9 followed by a much-improved upgrade in 2017. With every upgrade, the iPad it seems to take a huge leap forward to becoming an actual computer. I am waiting to see how the "full" Photoshop works with my current 12.9 512gb iPad. If there are no issues, I'll likely hold off on a new iPad Pro (no matter how sexy). My only issue with the Passport Drive is that it is a 'spinner' as they do not travel well, much prefer an SSD. Some rumors are that with iOS13, the files system will be updated to allow for additional devices, including storage.
    Glad to see a photog's take on this....

    Hi John, thanks for the informative video. I am now strongly considering adopting this work flow strategy myself - but wanted to confirm one thing with you first. I realized that you uploaded into LR directly from the HD's cloud companion app. Does this completely bypass the need to upload into camera roll/photos? I want my work flow to be strictly based off this drive, for both imports and exports. Thanks again for this great upload!

    Thumbs up, and sub'd. I added the iPad to my wedding and portrait session workflow when I got the iPad Pro 9.6. I had also purchased the 1st gen 12.9, and loved the screen, but it was honestly too bulky when coupled with the Logitech kb, so I mostly only used it for client consults to demo albums and video slide shows, but sold it once I heard rumored specs of the 3rd gen, + Adobe's announced port of PS to iOS -I knew I had to upgrade. And since I did enjoy the actual screen size of the 12.9 (just not the bezels), that is the one I got. I'm glad to see you're using the "platter drive" version of the WD My Passport, I was debating between that one or the SDD version, which is significantly more expensive -I think I'll be going with the platter-drive version you have, even 4TB is less than $300, where the 2TB SDD is nearly $800. Keep up the good work, @John!

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! Yeah I went with the non-SSD passport because of the price as well. The SSD would be nice. It really would be but OMG that price. I’m going to mainly be using LR for when I travel since I’m usually not gone for too long but I’ll be able to edit a handful of photos real quick which would be awesome. Glad you’re loving your iPad the new Gen is SOO good!

    Hey to go on about the iPad Pro a bit, I got the same iPad as you and my laptop is feeling lonely. Just edited my first wedding video on LumaFusion (maybe a bit over ambitious) and I have completely committed my photo editing to the iPad due to the fast workflow it provides. An app to recommend for guys here is Documents by readdle, it integrates with the native files app and gives a lot of “laptop” functionality to downloading and using files.

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the recommendation! Also, that's CRAZY that you edited a whole wedding video on LumaFusion. I still need to check it out. I'm over here messing with Adobe Rush and I'm not happy at all. lol

    • @adinwalls
      @adinwalls 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey yes Adobe rush is a waste of time. I’m hoping for a massive update on Lumafusion soon. It lacks heavily in colour grading tools. And I like to speed ramp and those features are very limited. BUT what it does do is force you to plan your shots on the day and be more deliberate. Lumafusions file management is also not on the level of Premiere or Final Cut yet so that’s not great for big projects. For smaller corporate gigs it’s perfect though.

      Usually what I'll do is do that on my main PC. However, if I'm traveling I'll import them all from my wireless hard drive. You can do this actually inside of Lightroom itself and it's a much better experience. Then after that you can start rating all of your photos. Thank you, this is the exact workflow I'm looking at adopting! Currently have the My Passport Wireless and an ancient iPad 2 that I'm going to replace. Do you need to import the RAW to the iPad to work from it, or is it possible to work directly off the drive wirelessly? Trying to determine which storage option is best for me, 64GB vs 256GB, I think it would be very rare for me to import a full set of photos directly to the iPad, likely just a few 'keeper' images while I'm traveling.

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad this helped out. You do have to import the photos onto your iPad. Currently there’s not a way to work off of the drive. Which would be SUPER awesome but you can’t do it. 😔😔 I went with the 256GB storage and I’m going great right now. Lightroom is only taking up about 10GBs currently and that’s with all of my RAWs as smart previews. Watch my video on Pro Photographer workflow and that’ll walk you through how I’m currently using my iPad to edit on.

Now as my workflow consists of Lightroom, Portrait Pro & Photoshop, would I be able to do some editing on the Macbook Pro & then in depth editing on the Ipad with the Apple Pencil then once done, sync back to the Macbook Pro for final touches and adding of watermark ?. Many thanks.

    These tips are great! thanks man! On that My Passport wireless hard drive, is it always pretty fast for transferring raw files? does it create its own wifi network?

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never had a problem with it's speed. It's nothing crazy fast but it's acceptable. For Wifi what you do is actually connect the My Passport to your Wifi and then it acts as a pass through. So your iPad is connected to the Hard drive and then the hard drive is connected to the Wifi.

    Cool video, thank you for posting! Does the wireless device delete the photos from the SD card? Also is there a good reason to not store the pictures in the cloud provided by Adobe along with the cc subscription?

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drive does not delete the files off of the SD card after import. Which is my favorite feature. This leaves me with 3 copies of a wedding after I shoot it (2 SDs and the copy on the wireless hard drive). I like the Adobe Cloud but honestly I'd rather have a physical copy of most things. I'm actually not extremely versed in the cloud and how it works and am/will be looking deeper into it and all of it's quirks.

    Awesome tutorial. I just bought the passport wireless drive and a new 12.9” iPad with the new pencil. I installed the drive without any hassle in a hotel room. One question, when you were skin smoothing, I know in LR Classic, there is a checkbox so that it finds edges and does go past them, so long as you are in the margins with the crosshairs. Is there a similar function on the LR CC? Thanks and I am a new subscriber!

      Unfortunately the auto mask option is not in Lightroom CC currently. Luckily with the pencil it's a little easier to pin point where you want to make your changes but I would REALLY love that option as it's a great help on desktop. Hope you're enjoying your iPad!

      That's awesome! Unfortunate at this moment you can't paste settings to multiple photos. You can paste it to a single photo however, so if you have a keyboard with your iPad it actually doesn't make it TOO bad. Bulk pasting would be nice but pasting single is all we got so far.

      You don't need to be connected to the internet. The My Passport makes it's own little network and can transfer the files to your iPad through that. But in Lightroom you'll need to make sure it's not only loading smart previews because then you will need the internet.

    Hey, thx for the great video. One question regarding upload the raw files to the Adobe Cloud. As far as I know raw files should be replaced by smart previews after syncing with Lightroom Classic to free up space both on the iPad an in the cloud. Is this the case for you and how do you set it up?

    • @jbivphotography
      @jbivphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To my understanding that's how it's working. Currently, I haven't tried syncing up with Lightroom Classic. So I use each program separately. Lightroom CC for all of my iPad and mobile stuff. And then Lightroom Classic for any serious bulk editing. So right now Lightroom CC is just synced to itself. From what it looks like, it loads the RAWs into the Creative Cloud and then references them for export. Everything else on your iPad is smart previews.

Lightroom CC is perfect for an on the go solution. however if you’re like me, and you shoot weddings the iPad Pro + Lightroom CC combination won’t be able to replace a full workstation. Also, thanks SO much about the comment on my quality. It means a lot. Stick around for more great content! 😊

    Still trying to wrap my mind around where the master photos live on my iPad. So I take some photos and then I connect my camera to my iPad which then asks me to import the photos off of the camera. I select the photos I want and import. These are raw photos which are now in my camera roll on my iPad. From there I open lightroom cc and import the photos I have just imported from the camera into the camera roll. Here is where I get confused. When the photos are being copied from my camera roll into Lightroom cc are they being bounced into the cloud immediately leaving behind the preview? My next question is if I am not connected to the Internet and Lightroom CC cannot bounce the raw files up into the cloud what am I left with in Lightroom CC? Am I left with the original photo that just came from my camera roll?

      If you're going to make it your main driver I'd probably go with the 12.9. I enjoy my 11" but I'm SUPER biased towards it. I use it for reading a lot and the 11" size I think works better. But as a main driver you may have a better experience with the 12.9. It depends on if you plan on using it mainly as a tablet or mainly as a "laptop". Also check out this DOPE keyboard for your iPad. www.brydge.com/ I got one and will be doing a video on it once they are fully released.

      It's full and real Lightroom. The only things you really can't do are photo merging. But everything else is there. Basically, it's the LR CC. So Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC are the 2 main "full" Lightrooms currently. LR CC is full as far as editing. It's a bit lacking as far as exporting but that's another reason why I do my exporting in LR Classic.
