Yaris owner from Cape Town, South Africa here. Mad props for highlighting some hidden gems here 🔥 Best of luck with the build as I'm considering the same fate for my 2nz engine!
the biggest issue why the scion makes less less power than the corolla is the exhaust. the up pipe that includes the two cats and the resonator is 2.25 inch then it drops down to just under 1.75 inch and uses the yaris muffler that's also very restrictive. when you finish the 2zr swap build a 2.25 inch exhaust so it can breathe. good luck on the swap I'm rooting for ya. I'm looking forward to seeing that yaris tear up the track again.
Thank you so much for checking out the (boardlands looking) Yaris when you were in town Joey; it was a pleasure meeting you! I'm looking forward to seeing how your build goes! Maybe we can get a little track day lined up in the future once both our builds are completed and compare again! Shameless plug but if anyone wants to follow along I am going to be building a spicy 🔥 1nz motor and transmission combo over the winter in hopes of having it completed before race season starts in early spring. Feel free to subscribe and follow along with my build and ask questions we'll learn the 1nz together! Thank you again Joey! Excellent video quality as usual! I hope to see you again soon, enjoy the USDM Speedometer!
I can't wait to see the running video of your Yaris with the 2ZR in. With your better transmission for acceleration, you'd feel the difference from the blue Yaris that you drove. My dream is to drop in a 3ZR short block, and a 2ZR cylinder head to eliminate the valvematic system, making it into a 2.0 Liter, and using 2ZR-FXE pistons to raise the compression ratio. Then have Marc from Frankenstein Motorworks tune it. Still currently just a pipe dream... 😅
I actually bought a 1nz yaris, stripped everything and swapped the engine into my 1989 starlet! this is becoming a pretty popular swap here in the netherlands. the 1nz is a very underrated engine imo. although its not the strongest
it's a great engine for sure. maybe one day i'll switch back to it, but for now I'm excited about swapping an engine for the first time. i really like the idea of the 1nz in 70s and 80s Toyotas though. is your starlet RWD or FWD?
@@RassoolRacing its the FWD ep70 starlet. it came with a 1liter carbed engine and produced somewhere in the 50hp. the car itself also weighs 750kilograms which is nothing. looking forward to your swap!
I've the 1nz in my 2012 Yaris 2dr 5spd. It feels quite a bit zippier than the 107 hp it is listed to have. I do NOT understand why Toyota just didn't bore/stroke the 1NZ and turbo it for the Yaris GR. That 1.6 3 cylinder is total crap.
I got an '07 Yaris as a gift, almost immediately found your channel, and have *really* been wanting to start modding it, but from my research it seems like such a snowball effect: almost upgraded the throttle body, it doesn't seat well on the intake, can't really find custom adapters anymore, and people say it doesn't make much difference anyway without an intake to match the TB, upgrade the intake to match the TB, now the exhaust is bottlenecking everything, upgrade the exhaust, now it runs lean, so upgrade the injectors to match, but now the fuel pump can't keep up, so gotta upgrade that. Oh yeah, and apparently after any change, you gotta tune it or risk ruining the engine. And since it's an old car now and so many have moved on, aftermarket parts are expensive and/or difficult to find. Also, I'm not super proficient with auto mechanic stuff, so I can't easily suss out how much of what I read is legitimate vs. fear mongering (e.g. installing a SRI/wider TB/anything that increases airflow without custom tuning will result in running lean and ruining your engine over time).
Hey Rassool, I just want to say thanks for being such an inspiration to me. Ive recently started working on my 2004 yaris sedan with my friends, so far we've slapped on some better tires, rims and a 5 speed gearbox. I just picked up some better suspension, so that's the next mod. What do you think is the most important mod that should be done to the yaris ? But i just want to say keep up the good content and im eager to see your future mods that you'll do to your yaris
that's a great start! next mod really depends on what your doing with the car. if it's your daily and a track car I'd say the wk motorsport shifter should be next. I make the car feel so much better when shifting and this one of the things you feel all the time. If you want to do more with the suspension and you're doing track or autox I'd say a rear sway bar but make sure you get an adjustable one. the whiteline one can change settings pretty quickly and you'll really feel a differences. that will being to teach you how to dial in a setup.
I still think with the 1.8, getting a little more torque, or at least having that torque available when you need it might be better. I’m not a Toyota guy. But for some reason the Yaris like yours look like a shortened sports car. I would love to see a Yaris series and maybe add some Honda Fits in the mix.
I wish I knew your were in Ohio I could have shown you my Yaris man! Keep up the great work! Keep your original engine and re-engineer it! Great video 😊
Jesse Pranther has built several 1NZ-FE race motors for some folks with national championships that will run at 7800 all day long and redline at 9k. He said there is a lot of wiggle room in the fuel mapping with a piggyback ecu and pistons/valve springs. Might be a good resource to reach out to if you are still considering the 1NZ-FE... Also on a personal note, thanks for the great content you put out, always look forward to your vids.
Probably because they don't know that the Yaris is deceptively nimble and zippy. IMO, it behaves very similarly to the 2nd gen Honda CRX Si. I was rather impressed with even the 107hp 1nz in the 2012 2dr 5spd I bought a couple of months ago. It definitely feels as if it has more than 107 hp!
Listen, I've been asking you to turbo the bloody 1NZ for like 17 videos now. The Rods are too damn cheap you don't even need pistons. Just Turbo the damn thing for Gods sake

good to know. I'm planning on using some MWR long tube headers, and then a straight pipe to me current axle back so that should be what we're after

Great video! Can't wait to see the swap
5:40 - Hah, I have the same eyelids.
Kinda amazing how bad the bumpers we got in Canada were for these when you see this...
Is that @TheInteriorAutoMechanic 's Yaris? :D
Yes it is 😊
Excited to see how this works out.

The Fit has the same issue in the US. If you go over to SE Asia, there is a lot more appreciation/aftermarket scene for these small modern hatchbacks.
When was you in south africa cape town im from there there as well and have a toyota yaris 1.8 ts tht comes out with the 2zr-fe
I was there back in January visiting family. I'll have to visit again soon I guess :)
They have fully forged parts for rather cheap there’s many in the 600hp range with a turbo
6:30 is that an Eaton m90?
Something similar. I know there were a few kits for the 1nz but this isn't the blitz or TTE kit, and it's a 2nz so it could be very different
