I remember when I was videotaping these 2 episodes, they had a trailer for Star Trek VI referencing the anniversary and it being the original cast's final journey. The trailer didn't show anything of the movie itself, just a montage of the TOS and the preceding 5 movies. I doubt I still have that tape, but the commercial is on TH-cam.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country came out about a month after this episode aired. In Spock's first conversation with Picard, he makes a reference to the events in that movie, so it was a little bit of a precursor of what was yet to come. For me the best part of this episode was at the very end when Spock mind melded with Picard, and smiled. It was always nice to see little bits of his humanity sneak out.
Some people saw Data as essentially TNGs answer to Spock, so to see them both on screen together was amazing for a lot of people. Nerd Long and Prosper Ms Connolly 🖖
And the conversation between them. Spock talking about how Data posesses what Vulcans spend a lifetime trying to achieve, and Data intrigued that Spock mostly, but not completely, cuts himself off from the humanity Data has strived for
The actor playing Pardek (Malachi Throne) played the Commodore in the two-part TOS episode "The Menagerie", so "Unification" was a bit of a Star Trek family reunion in many ways.
In the final mind meld, Leonard Nimoy's tear was real and not originally planned. Mark Lenard also passed away not long after this episode, having played Sarek since the 60's in the original series. This makes the final scene all the more poignant and hits me every time. Thanks for sharing your reaction 😊
These are some of the most profound episodes. The complexity of Spock’s relationship with his father is a sticky quagmire. So much of Star Trek relates to our lives. Two years before this episode aired, the Berlin Wall fell. I know I must sound like a crazy person, but this show helped shape my whole system of values and beliefs. When Data was talking about Spock abandoning what he’d sought his whole life, and Spock only said, “Fascinating” it was a few lines of dialogue that set my brain tumbling for ages. The "Why do they spoil things in the credits?" question is one I've always wondered. The only people who will care, are the ones that would want a surprise. Your "OMG IT'S SPOCK!" reaction is the stuff of life.
SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) rules require the credits. It's not the best for the fans, but for the actors, appearance in an episode of an ongoing show, is part of their resume - to get other work.
From what little I understand, main cast, guest star or special guest star credits are as much part of contract negotiations as the financial compensation

Another excellent Star Trek reaction Jen. I always look forward to them cause no one does them better than you 🖖 and the ending when Spock and Picard mind meld is a very touching moment.
These were 2 legendary episodes that prove perfectly why Star Trek is so good! Back then I discussed them with my friends at school for days.😁 Jen, it was so much fun to see your excitement about Spock's surprising appearance. Definitely two of my absolute favorite reactions of yours❤ Thanks for an awesome Star Trek sunday! 🖖
Leonard Nimoy really loved doing this episode* because he had so much dialog compared to the last few Star Trek movies he was in. The look of quiet emotion upon feeling his father's memories through Picard was touching, and a rare occasion for Spock. * And of course the TNG crew loved having a TOS member come onto their show!
"Then I'm in good company sir" Remember that in ST III, Sarek and Kirk mindmelded. So Picard also has some memories of Kirk in him, especally centered in Spock. The disruptor is not a Varon-T.
When I watched this video, the end card linked to Jen's reaction to "The Menagerie", which brings up another crossover from the original series: Malachi Throne played Pardek and Commodore Mendez. He also voiced one of the butt-heads (The Keeper) in the original TOS pilot in footage that was reused in "The Menagerie". So for this special episode, they brought in TWO of the original, original cast!
An appropriate story to honor the late Gene Roddenberry. Name dropping Kirk, Sarek, Spock and Data, arguably his greatest character creations meet, Malachi Throne, (Pardek) was involved in the original TOS pilot.
One good thing I got from your reaction: every time I watch this, I'm impressed/entertained by the keyboardist, and you gave me the nudge to look her up. Harriet C. Leider, thank you for your wonderful performance. R.I.P.
Jen, Your enthusiasm brings back memories of the excitement my friends and I had back in November 1991 when this first aired. Spock & Data joining forces was all we talked about. The Trek Conventions and Fan club magazines were our news source. Great job.
Hi Jen! i enjoyed your enthusiasm for seeing Spock again, and i cried a few times. To answer your question: this two-part episode aired about 1 month before the final TOS feature film (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) was released in theatres. But Star Trek VI takes place in the year 2293 ... and Unification I and II takes place 75 years later, in 2368.
As other people have mentioned in their comments, this two parter was produced for Star Trek's 25th Anniversary in 1991, and aired very close to when Star Trek VI came out. In fact, the next episode, "A Matter of Time" was the last episode of TNG to air before Star Trek VI premiered in theaters.
The trailers for Undiscovered Country showed the shapeshifter looking like Kirk getting vaporized. This came out at the same time and Spock's line about how he was responsible for what happened to Capt. Kirk and crew led me to believe that Undiscovered Country was going to kill off Kirk.
Yes, these were some of my favorite episodes, because, for me, Spock is my all time favorite TV character! This brought together all the best elements of Star Trek. I remember late summer 1991, 25th Anniversary of Star Trek and it was announced both in TV Guide and Entertainment Weekly (and Starlog magazine) that Star Trek 6 was about to premiere as well as "a special episode featuring Mr. Spock". As I remember it, these two episodes air one week after another right after the theatrical premiere of Star Trek 6. Such exciting times!
"SPOCKSPOCKSPOCKSPOCKSPOCKSPOCK" before the episode begins is exactly the right response. Spock & Data was the team-up we'd dreamed about for years at this point. So sad the scene was so short, and so one-part.
Something of interest, the actor playing Pardek is Malachi Throne, who was also in the Original Series episode, The Menagerie, where he played Commodore Mendez.
"logic cannot explain why, I only know that I must pursue this" Great character consistency with the growth Spock showed in the movies, especially Undiscovered Country.
1:41 That moment where Spock compared Picard’s stubbornness to that of Kirk was a very cool moment. As well as the scene that’s not in this reaction, where Spock tells about what happened during the Klingon peace process. He was literally teasing the audience about what had happened with Kirk during the mission that would be revealed in a few weeks with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
If I recall correctly, this came out just a few months before The Undiscovered Country. Spock's reference to Kirk and his crew in this episode had people worried that not all the original crew would survive the final 'original generation' movie.
The reason there were so few appearances by TOS characters in TNG was due to a guide from Gene Roddenberry that no TOS characters would appear to allow TNG to stand on its own. With the exception of a cameo by Dr. McCoy in the first episode (they didn't mention his name but you knew who he was), no other TOS characters made an appearance. It wasn't until "Sarek" that a TOS character made an appearance, and they eventually loosened the restrictions, allowing Spock to make an appearance here. Plus, this episode was intended to be a tie-in to "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (which was yet to be released at that time).
Not a bad two-parter in itself but something really special with Spock's appearance and all the fun interactions. And of course, also elevated by your joyfully infectious enthusiasm Jen :).
That scene with Spock and Data alone I keep imagining Bones walking in and being like "Well now! What in all of space have we here? Oh, that's right! My worst nightmare come true!"
2:34 These have the original credits, and back in the day we would have seen commercials for this episode leading up to it (that would no doubt have featured Denise Crosby in order to generate even more buzz), so the cat would have been out of the bag before Saturday Night. 7:06 That's a legendary pairing right there. 7:57 Perhaps unsurprisingly, Klingon Opera is pretty Metal.🤘 9:34 An untamed ornithological misadventure?
So fun to watch your reaction to this awesome episode! I think this one (two parts) is one of my favorite ST episodes, of any of the series! I always get choked up when I see Spock mind meld with Picard, and you see Spock trying to contain his emotion, looks like he is trying not to cry. So emotional, so good!
I waited so long for you to get to these episodes (Unification 1 & 2) and hoping you would not get wind of Spock's appearance. I wasn't disappointed. It was so great to see your excitement about Spock's return. So glad you enjoyed it.
This episode featured a reunion between two actors from TOS. In case you didn't recognize him, Pardek was played by Malachi Throne who also played Commodore Mendez (the "lead prosecutor" against Spock) in "The Menagerie".
I'm so thrilled you loved this episode-it's one of my favorites too! There's actually a continuation to this episode, which continues in one of the newer Star Trek series that wrapped up earlier this year. I hope you're planning to dive into all the other Star Trek shows and movies after TNG. I'm a huge fan and have watched every single one. Right now, I'm enjoying the new and final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks even though I don't want it to end! In total, the Star Trek universe includes 12 series with a whopping 934 episodes across 49 seasons, plus 14 movies (the latest set to stream on Paramount+ in January)! They're all canon, in the same continuity, timeline and multiverse to me while there might be a few people disagree with me and there's a minority who hate all the new Star Trek series but don't listen to them. Lol. There are many of us fans who love all Star Trek and don't dislike any of them while there are many who don't like all of them either. 😊
Loved. Your. Reaction!!! :D This episode has everything! Denise Crosby, Leonard Nimoy, mind melds, Vulcan pinches, Riker playing piano and having a goofy hairdo, Troi flirting with a junkyard manager, Worf singing Klingon opera ... who could ask for anything more? X)
9:33 Reminded me of when Bones exclaimed to Spock they were going on a wild goose chase and Spock replied with something like "blah blah pursuing aquatic fowl." I think it was from the episode "Gamesters of Triskelion" where Kirk, Chekov, and Uhura vanished from the bridge.
Awesome reaction! I remember being as excited as you were when this first came on TV. Most definitely one of my favorite TNG moments. I think this came out around the same time as Undiscovered Country. I remember going to see it in the theater but I don’t remember if it was before or after watching these two episodes, but I think it was around the same time.
So happy you finally saw this and that no one spoiled it. This was the episode that got me utterly hooked on TNG. Watched it with my grandmother when it aired originally and I just couldn't stop. I had already been a fan of the TOS movies but this kinda sealed my fate. As I recall, Star Trek VI was about to come out (hence Spock's line about the role he played in what happened with peace with the Klingons). When are you gonna start selling some merch? I'd totally buy a "Freaking Romulans!' t-shirt!
Please note - When this first came out, they mentioned the Khittomer Accords. That "Commerical Break" was the promo for "Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country", which ties into this episode.
Love these episodes, great way to get Spock into TNG 😊 I have to admit though, totally kept getting distracted by that beautifully flowing hair of yours - makes for quite the contrast every time the focus is on Picard 😄
One reason Spock only showed up at the end of Unification 1 was that they only had Leonard Nimoy for a short time, enough to film one episode. In fact, Unification 2 was filmed first, with Unification 1 filmed the week after. And the reason Denise Crosby is credited at the start of the episode is so that the actor can get residuals for the episode when it's re-broadcast. It has to be a _huge_ deal for an actor to be uncredited, since that means forgoing their pay.
This released a couple of months before Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. I like how they worked a promotion of the movie into the episode by referencing the "consequences" he put Kirk and his crew through.
The Klingon bridge is the same “set” in these episodes as the one used for Changs BoP from Star Trek 6. Leonard Nimoy agreed to appear in the episodes for SAG minimum wage in order to promote ST6 as he was the movie’s producer. Part 2 was filmed before part 1 to accommodate his schedule.
I am guessing that they changed the rules at some point after this aired, regarding credits which can become spoilers. I can think of a few other episodes of various shows that aired around that time which had spoiler credits, but none recently. The biggest recent example I can think of is a season finale cliffhanger ending, in which a character who had died a few episodes earlier inexplicably returned. They had removed the actress's name from the opening credits after her character died, including for the finale. But once the cliffhanger ending was done, the first words to appear on the screen as part of the closing credits was "Also starring..." and the actress's name.
I didn't appreciate Spock meeting Picard as much as i should have being a kid when this first aired, glad i could experience it again through Jen. Is this Jen's introduction to Klingon music as well? 😁
Hi Jen ,,, A little Trek History to go with these Episodes , Malachi Throne's (Senator Pardek) history with Trek goes way back to the Original Pilot Episode "The Cage" In which he was the Voice of the Keeper , He then followed that by Appearing in episodes 11 & 12 of the 1st series "The Managerie" parts 1 & 2 as Commordore Jose Mendez🖖

He also appeared on the 1960s "Batman" series as False Face. His identity was kept secret at the time, he was credited as "? as False Face."
"Data doing a Vulcan nerve pinch! Just worlds colliding here!"
@vermithax Reminds me of TOS. KIRK:"You have to show me how to do that!" SPOCK: " I have tried, Captain".
The hypothetical gag!,...... right up there with the good ship lollipop one. 😂
"I can't believe these guys are talking to each other."
Oh Jen, so much COOL stuff awaits you on this journey. So much.
I'm glad you didn't get spoiled. This episode had a perfect ending. Makes me cry every time.
"Then I'm in good company sir" Remember that in ST III, Sarek and Kirk mindmelded. So Picard also has some memories of Kirk in him, especally centered in Spock.
The disruptor is not a Varon-T.
I’m an older guy and fan since seeing ALL the shows in their original airing. Strange to admit it, but Jens reactions made me tear up. Thanks Jen! ❤
Thank you for posting these back-to-back.
03:54 "Same one I've always had." -- I've used that line to great success myself 😉😁
Worf getting excited singing Klingon opera…. and some say he is not a merry man!
"SPOCKSPOCKSPOCKSPOCKSPOCKSPOCK" before the episode begins is exactly the right response.
Spock & Data was the team-up we'd dreamed about for years at this point. So sad the scene was so short, and so one-part.
I appreciate the ep way more revisiting it here like this than I did in it’s original run. Fun stuff, Jen!
Something of interest, the actor playing Pardek is Malachi Throne, who was also in the Original Series episode, The Menagerie, where he played Commodore Mendez.
"logic cannot explain why, I only know that I must pursue this"
Great character consistency with the growth Spock showed in the movies, especially Undiscovered Country.
This one hits all the emotions in all the right ways. And it's fun to see Jen completely nerd out!
"Freakin' Romulans!" I love to hear that phrase from you.
Jen: "Worlds are colliding here!" 😂❤
I would totally order a “Freakin’ Romulans!” shirt!
Ponytail is majestic Jen. Whatever product you are using should be sponsoring your shows.
"A wild ornithological chase" 🤣🤣🤣
Ultimate Computer vibe, I like it!
"Wow ! Data doing a Vulcan pinch ! Worlds are colliding here !!!" 🤩🤜🤛
2:34 These have the original credits, and back in the day we would have seen commercials for this episode leading up to it (that would no doubt have featured Denise Crosby in order to generate even more buzz), so the cat would have been out of the bag before Saturday Night.
Spock vs Picard vs Data: fantastic grouping, they're all essentially different versions of Vulcans.
This episode featured a reunion between two actors from TOS. In case you didn't recognize him, Pardek was played by Malachi Throne who also played Commodore Mendez (the "lead prosecutor" against Spock) in "The Menagerie".
That is the legendary episode with the reflection of the cameraman in the office.
Loved. Your. Reaction!!! :D
This episode has everything!
3:04 D'Tan, the young boy seen here, forms the Romulan Republic in Star Trek Online, which takes places about 40 years after this story.
"CAN'T SOMEBODY GET ME A NAPKIN!!!???" has randomly entered my head at least once a month for the last 33 years.
The Galorndon Core was from the Episode "The Enemy", and also the debut of the Romulan Commander Tomolak.
Thank you for doing these reactions to Star Trek TNG, Jen, it's really appreciated. 🙂
This is the best first / rewatch iof tng. Best part of my Sunday.
Speaking of familiar faces, Malachi Throne(Pardek) was one of the judges at Spock's trial in "The Menagerie"TOS!😊
Please note - When this first came out, they mentioned the Khittomer Accords. That "Commerical Break" was the promo for "Star Trek VI, The Undiscovered Country", which ties into this episode.
Love these episodes, great way to get Spock into TNG 😊
I have to admit though, totally kept getting distracted by that beautifully flowing hair of yours - makes for quite the contrast every time the focus is on Picard 😄
I love that we get a bit of Spock and Data together, since Data is, in a way, the Spock analog of TNG.
I'm honestly SO happy you didn't have these episodes spoiled in advance.
As a kid, the darn preview for the next episode gave away the whole thing.
That bit in the bar is very funny want with Riker and Worf gets in on the act as well.
Anyone notice how the theme hypnotizes Jen 😂🎉
One reason Spock only showed up at the end of Unification 1 was that they only had Leonard Nimoy for a short time, enough to film one episode. In fact, Unification 2 was filmed first, with Unification 1 filmed the week after.
And the reason Denise Crosby is credited at the start of the episode is so that the actor can get residuals for the episode when it's re-broadcast. It has to be a _huge_ deal for an actor to be uncredited, since that means forgoing their pay.
Fun to see these videos today. I'm currently working on a 3D model of a Borg cube for a client. Finished a Vulcan shuttle yesterday.
