18:55 Paro's mother said that because Dev's mother was insulting her daughter. If a daughter will be born in Dev's family also then they will get to know how someone feels when their daughter is insulted.
Just saw the watchalong but wanted to comment here :) Loved that one and your guys' observations and feelings related to it. Some thoughts based on your reactions: 1. Firstly, loved that it was so apparent how much Miguel was often immersed in the visuals. Even as Josh gave his comments during some songs about framing, lighting, set design, Miguel was often quiet because he was observing as innocent audience and not from a filmmaker or critic's view. I could see him taking it all in and I could make out that he was observing each detail of the dancing and jewellery. Sometimes, we all deserve to just be enthralled or wowed without thinking about it. :) 2. Westerners and people of new generations are often horrified at how Devdas wounded Paro on her forehead. Yes, in today's time and in the real world, not okay. But this film is about a grand love and it's metaphorical. Devdas had anyway always thought Paro was his and he could do anything with her and she probably felt vice versa. The physical pain of the wound is nothing compared to the pain in the heart. The wound was left because she was going to be someone else's and he somehow wanted to make her his- so he left a mark. Im not justifying it, im just explaining it. 3. Tawaifs or courtesans, like Madhuri Dixit's character, were actually singers, dancers, artists who were highly respected. It was the British who started calling them whores and their homes- brothels, because tawaifs remained unmarried and their patrons were rich men. Tawaifs would share a sexual or physical relationship with just 1-2 men for many years who also financed her living. Just because they were unmarried and danced for the pleasure of men, they were deemed as unworthy of respect and honour by certain people beginning in the late 19th century. Before that, they had a high status. 4. In the end, you both were questioning why Paro's husband wasn't empathising with her since he'd also loved someone else. Simple answer- patriarchy. The story/novel is set in very early 1910s. Society didn't bother with women's emotions and often did not give them the liberty to have their own complex emotions. A woman just had to be dutiful and do the right thing. So it was okay for him to have loved someone but not okay for her to have emotions, let alone act on those emotions and see her lover one last time. What's sad is that this problem happened to a lot of young girls, though not as dramatically. So many young girls those days got married at 14,15,16. They may have loved someone. And everybody would have discouraged them from ever expressing that throughout their lives. They were expected to keep that secret hidden within and repress it. Tragic, to say the least.
Devdas was nominated for a BAFTA - Best International Feature Aishwarya Rai was Miss World in 1994. Devdas was released in 2002. It was 8 years since she won.
1) The scenario of that evil daughter in law, having so much hate/venom is quite common because of greed for inheritance/money. These kind of family politics is very common in Indian families to get a bigger chunk of inheritence. 2) The dancers were looked down upon/ thought to be from not so "noble families" and they used to dance in gatherings of noble families. And yes the romantic movies of this era are very "unrealistically romantic" 😅😅
I was hoping that we would get some closure with the daughter in law story arc... man she was so poisonous 😅 Overall it was a nice watch for the time the movie was produced
05:23 Hello Josh, Aishwarya won Miss world in 1994 & this movie came in 2002. btw She was also awarded "Lifetime Beauty with a Purpose Award" by the Miss world organizers in 2014.
SRK in Devdas as Devdas the finest example of peak male beauty of that decade and after 2010 to 2018 before his 4 year long silence Raees and Harry in Jab Harry Met Sejal are the hottest appearance.. on the basis of acting performance. Honorable mention Dr. Jehangir Khan in Dear Zindegi His calibre as an actor in experimental scripts both in Mass-commercial and intensifying content based works are these. Zero is a hugely misunderstood work of him where love and empathy has been shown beyond audience's average thinking or expectation so the negative response was inevitable (actually that’s what it was!)
This movie has so many changes from the actual novel by Sharatchandra Chottopadhyaya. 1. The diya concept wasn't in the novel 2. Instead of Devdas Paro had a grand mother who proposed their marriage but no such a drama happened in the scenes. 3. Paro and Chandramukhi never met face to face in the novel.
The original novel was written by saratchandra chattopadhyay, and is set in anga region of bihar. Oh yes! Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films are a treat to the eyes and so poetic to the ears. Bajirao Mastani and Padmavat is also a must watch for the same type of film making.
Congratulations Josh... The USA has just beaten Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.. you guys should go for the USA vs IRELAND.. It's possible the USA can qualify for Super 8 if they win that match

I personally wouldn't have recommended this movie to you guys because its regressive in a way and only hardcore old desi bollywood fans would understand a few complexities. There's drama and there's devdas. A little too much! That being said, I absolutely loved how Miguel was lost in the beauty of the frames. The aesthetics in this movie are timeless and perhaps that is why ppl wanted you to watch it. The colors, the fabrics, the moonlight and i could go on forever. Pure beauty!
I only watched and Love the Movie because of Madhuri Dixit she is the goddess of Dance and Expression and a brilliant Actress and SRK.❤❤ I am Not a big Aishwarya Rai fan but she is a good Actress
I would recommend the recent Bollywood family/relationship drama films "KAPOOR AND SONS", "GEHRAIYAAN", "DIL DHADAKNE DO" and "KHO GAYE HUM KAHAN" ❤ They are gems 💯
Josh, I was reading a lot about recently about geopolitics and I was reading Veer Savarkar's essentials of Hindutva, it was saying " An American may become a citizen of India. He would certainly be entitled, if bona fide, to be 'treated as our Bharatiya or Hindi, a countryman and a fellow citizen of ours. But as long as in addition to our country, he has not adopted our culture and our history, inherited our blood and has come to look upon our land not only as the land of his love but even of his reverence, he cannot get himself incorporated into the Hindu fold" As soon as I read it, it reminded me of you. You'll always be a part of India and India will always be a part of you. Take care
Not all people know what film making is and what is a good movie… HEERAMANDI is a must watch…. It’s a visual treat with some great performances. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a genius who just keeps getting better and better with his every next project. HeeraMandi is a definite MUST WATCH.
In the time the movie was made with 50 crore the most expensive one and the producer got arrested for taking money from a underworld...still after the release it gains 198 crores I guess
12:20 I think the black mark is a beauty mark to “avoid the evil eye “. Sometimes women and children are applied these small dots on their face to help ward off the bad eye according to superstitions.
I would recommend reacting to recent Bollywood romcoms next; "BADRINATH KI DULHANIA" (starring Varun & Alia), "ROCKY AUR RANI KII PREM KAHANI" (starring Ranveer & Alia) & "TERI BAATON MAIN AISA ULJHA JIYA" (starring Shahid & Kriti) should be next 💕✨
You should watch heeramandi as well, ik people r shitting on that series a lot but its not as bad as theyre making it seem, definitely could be watched atleast once
Yes last three movies are really not that great movies it’s only part of these movies was getting hype to crowd ❤️but we always appreciate your effort and reaction🙂❤️👍🏻🙏🏻 we cannot compare this movie to HeeraMandi as technology and film makers have grown huge in couple of years ❤️🙂
Here it is ;-)... As much as I love SLB's way of filming I really wish you'd have chosen another of his films (period films Padmaavat or Bajirao Mastani). As a foreigner I thought Devdas was (apart from the art) a typical oversugared Bollywood film and rather boring. SLB excels in many things, but unfortunately always has a very linear and simple storytelling.
I see people suggesting you to watch pathan n all.. I know they are hit movies and already on your list. Even we were excited for those when they came out but once you watch it, you realise how stupid and waste of time they are and why did Shah Rukh khan say yes for such a movie after doing a gem like My name is Khan (best of his career)
No one told this but this Devdas is actually a novel written by a author named Saratchandra Chattopaadhyaay in 1901 i guess.
This novel has so many things common with the writer's life. Tragedy came everywhere he ( writer ) went.

This movie was still a modern take on Devdas, originally made in 1955 and then Anurag Kashyap made Dev-D in 2009
You should definitely watch dev-d! it’s a contemporary take on devdas and has amazing acting and directing! A must watch 😊
loved dev-d
