Amazing review, and I completely love your sense of humor. Really considering on buying a pair of these, I own a pair of Sennheiser HD599, but I need a pair of good sounding, closed back headphones for a cheap price, and your open minded review really gave me the confidence of deciding on these headphones. I used to own the AKG K511, amazing pair of headphones for that price and I miss that sound, I feel too spoiled with the HD599's nowadays for casual use AND mixing/critical listening :D
Since you're used to more upmarket headphones I'd also consider looking at AudioTechnica at a maybe slightly higher price range. I don't know exactly what they got in stock right now, but every time I heard them I thought they were ridiculous value for money. I can't say the AKG K52 are 'that' closed. They technically are, but they definitely don't close your ears off. How about the BeyerDynamic DT150? I think that's the best sounding affordable closed back pair of headphones I've heard. Sure, they are a lot more expensive than the K52 but I'm seriously considering getting a pair one day. Really happy you enjoyed the review! Despite covid, I've actually been insanely busy and haven't been able to do any in-depth videos lately. There's loads of plans though. Pity headphone manufacturers don't sponsor me. But hey, I'm at an audio show soon, may want to ask some questions ;).
@@rollingtroll Thank you for the quick answer, and all the tips! And I know what you mean, the K52's are probably not completely isolating sound from the outside, but comparable to the HD599's (you can literally hear EVERYTHING with them on and with music on), they probably would fit me personally. The DT150 looks like an awesome pair of headphones, but the thing for me is the overall clamp-force or whatever you can call it can be problematic for me (ATH-M20x is a perfect example, also the SteelSeries Arctis 5 and Logitech G633, I've got a humongous head and it's annoying as f*, lol), since when I use headphones I like them to be rather loose-fitting on my head. Also availability for buying them and shipping them to Sweden with the least shipping costs since I'm on a budget is a problem. Headphone manufacturers SHOULD sponsor you, since reviewers like you are needed. ;D
@@Mibmu I wore the dt150 when I was still fat and they fit my fat head. It may be worth a try. That said, the k52 at that price always come in handy :D.
I’d a Sony MBR-XB550AP. Bought it bcz of the pros headphones have over earphones. But I made the mistake of not researching. On ear headphones are hell. Sweaty ears and tiring with the bands adding pressure on the sides of my skull. Though the sound was good I really didn’t get to enjoy them. I spent some time looking for a comfortable over ear headphones and I think this is it. Your review is essentially what I was looking for. I’m not a music enthusiast, just casual listening for music or movies. Thanks to your review I’ve made up my mind.
Not all on-ears are equally bad but generally, it's not ideal. Especially if you have a larger head. The K52 are great value. But if you have a little more to spend, I recommend the Audiotechnica ATH-M30x. They are quite a lot better, and equally comfortable. They also fold which may or may not be useful for you. Happy to help though!
Welcome! And they are honestly good at any price, there's no way of disliking these. But if you don't have much to spend, they are among the best options out there (y)
You are welcome! I plan to do more headphone videos soon :). The BH770 is meant to look like the Beyerdynamic DT770. No idea if it sounds like them though!
@@random_user2024 yes its shit qouality is bad and when you turn the volume too 100 the sound get distroded its dose not grap your head tight go buy behringer its way better
I got them for like $10. I am a simple man with a smartphone. Are these even for me? I don't have much idea about technical terms. Someone recommended me and I took them.
I bought a pair. I believe they’re sold as studio headphones. I wanted a set for a br600 boss recording thing. And it’s failed horribly. So sending them back.
Interesting. I understand the akgs were preferred by you, but i think I'll go ahead and by the 850s. Both seem good. Good review. Also, new sub. Good stuff.
@@rollingtroll Sound is personal preference BTW. What may sound good to me may sound bad to you. And that's okay 👌 But if you hook these up to quality equipment and EQ(to my preference) They're like strapping a pair of old school Cerwin Vegas to your head 🤣
If sound was all personal preference then that would mean that some phone speakers sound 'good' because some people listen to them. Some people don't care, or have a broken taste, but there's good and bad sound. There's also taste, but that's a different matter. There's good rigs that I don't like and good rigs that I do like. But that doesn't mean there's no bad ones. @@budzlightyear2212
hey man, loving the vids, i had a question about the k52's actually... how would you rate the soundstage as i am kinda looking for an immersive experience in music, movies and gaming and all?
It's headphones, stound 'stage' as such is not really a thing. In the end it's mostly left and right. I do realize that some headphones have some stage going on that at least allows you to hear stuff coming from behind but honestly, that's very limited on these. I'd go a bit more upmarket for that and you'd definitely like the AKG K240's I keep shouting about, haha ;).
akg72 are the oppose, bass frequency are brutally cutted meanwhile highs are real good(I thing). I ve seen some review of akg and it seems a common "problem" the cutted bass
Yeah I got both Samson SR850 1st and then AKG K52 2nd. I prefer Samson being open back the AKGs are also good because it close backs to stop noise. I got them for dirt cheap so that’s why I have 2 headphones
What about soundstage and instrument separation?? And another question i never owned over ear headphones so can tell me which one is better for just listening to music open back or close?? I dont mind the sound leakage and my room is quite.
Open backs generally sound more... open. And have better staging. But honestly at this price range, that's not something to expect too much of. It's tonally good, except for the rolled off highs, and that's really great for this money. Bang for the buck is the Audiotechnica ATH-M30x though, if you want something a little more serious.
Haven't heard the AT's. Usually AT is good at any price range, since they are twice as expensive they may be a good idea. But at that price range, as stated, AKG K240 Studio :)
It's just that the original brand discs are rattly, but if you take them off there's a hole so you need to put something on that :D. I could never get these off by the way, I did succesfully do it with the Samson SR850 (made a review of that years ago) and it was a major upgrade. It's not necessary on super well built headphones obviously, this was just to stop a bit of aluminium rattling :D.
thank you a lot for this, totally needed it just one weird question i know but hey- since the headband seems tight enough in its normal state, can you put them on with the headband kinda "resting" behind the nape/neck without worrying about them falling out? instead of the normal way to put em on with the headband on the eer- head, kek just for personal reasons, since after a while i get uncomfortable with any headband of these type of headsets, hence one of the reasons of why i avoided em until now
i just bought this headphone and its really good, for gaming, for music, mixing, recording, you just got to get use to it, i was using a cheap "gaming" headset before and it was more bassy so when comparing the two of them, the akg seemed a bit weak on that matter, it is subjective, it all depends on what you are used to listen to, but the akg k52 is way sharper and way cleaner than most of more expensve headphones, you just have to get used to it, and when you do it sounds better than most of headphones i tried, also the virtual surround is perfect on that thing
Pretty much all headphones are overdoing low end these days, it's quite exhausting. The AKG definitely isn't light on the low end, but many laptops and built-in sound interfaces in motherboards are, so chances are that you're not really getting the best from the K52. That said, AKG does tend to put some emphasis on the midrange, where most cheap headphones completely lack that (it's all highs and lows). What you should do; Listen ot the AKG's for a month or two, then switch back to what you had before. You'll probably laugh your ass off :D. Happy you like them!
@@rollingtroll by chance my cheap gaming headset had a pretty good sound (for a cheap gaming headset) so when i switched to the akg i got used to it really fast, but i can see how the akg can sound weak compared to most of gaming and really bassy headphones, for most people, the more bass you have the better it sounds, even when the bass are killing the mid and high freqs...
Hi master! Thanks for your time! I got a question, do you recommend this headphones for listening techno music? I just want to listen music not a production use.
I personally don't listen to electronic music so I wouldn't know, but I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't be good for that. The low end is fine and they are never overly agressive sounding, so they'll probably be bass heavy enough, and on the laid back side otherwise, so that sound about right for techno?
I know you were recommending the K240, but are there any closed-back alternatives you would recommend around that price point? I think closed-backs would be more convenient for me right now, and I'm still deciding whether the K52s are the best budget option or if there are any other headphones I should consider
@@rollingtroll Nice, thanks for the quick reply. I looked them up but unfortunately on top of the price they seem pretty hard to drive so I'd need more equipment as well I'll probably end up trying out the K52s first
@@rollingtroll Ideally if I could drive the headphones directly with my computer that would be great, but that's most likely not gonna happen (although I think it should work with the K52 at least). I could grab a FiiO BTR3K if necessary but I'm not sure that's even gonna be enough with that impedance, and getting a stronger amp along with the headphones would already exceed my current budget by quite a bit Although lately I've been considering just getting the K240s and a decent pair of IEMs to use outside instead, if there aren't any better closed back alternatives at that price
So, would you really recommend the K52 for bass player? I play bass and i try to find headphones to monitor my bass guitar. Anyway, thanks for make this video, straight comparison with the K52, not just read some text from other people.
Even from combiningtexts you can derive a lot! Check my AirPods max review for a laugh ;). They are definitely good for a bass player. They don’t have overwhelming low end but are very defined so it won’t become one big mush of bass like sennheiser would do at this price range. Should be easy to follow exactly what you play. With the highs being these headphones weak point bass guitar seems a perfect use case!
Hi! I'm from Argentina, and I really wonder how did you came by Onda Vaga? It's a beatiful argentinian/uruguayan band. Does it have any sonic qualities that you think are useful to test headphones? I'm really curious! Thanks for the review, it's really detailed. I'm still debating myself between the K52 and K72. They are both almost at the same price here. Thanks again
Spotify! They recommended their Ramones cover. I actually managed to buy the record (three even, got some friends into it as well) from Argentina by randomly e-mailing record stores in BA. Ended up buying three copies at Exiles, who shipped them to the Netherlands for me.
Did you just glue the coin on top of the samson branding without opening anything? Would you say the upgrade on sound justify the downgrade on looks? Lol
You can just take the branding out, it's clipped in. I still have it somewhere. And then I glue that coin on. 20 eurocents fits perfectly. And yeah, it does justify it. But then I don't look with my ears :D. You could obviously have something custom made but that'd be costly
@@rollingtroll i hear you mention "burning in" the headphones, what does that do? Is that something that people usually aim to do for their earphones? Or it's only worth doing for a certain equipment?
A dac is for turning digital signal into analog, so it depends on how high quality your digital source is. I personally don't use DACs, I just have good sounding streamers and computer audio interfaces. That said, a good headphone preamp is always a good idea but seriously, we are talking about 27 euro headphones here. Though they sound objectively good this is not something you buy as a perfectionist. Just plug them into whatever and it's probably worth your 27 euros ;)
I should add; you will always listen to the weakest link so investing a little bit in everything and keeping the audio chain balanced is never a bad idea.
I neve rheard the K92 but it's two steps up from the K52. They should never be the same price, so either the K52 is way too expensive, or the K92 is way too cheap. I would be careful, could be a scam if you can find the K92 that cheap. Over here the K52 is twice the price
Thanks a thousands for the good review, I have the headphones myself and after at time they began to be comfy in the start was really weird after moving from gaming headsets. Not sure if to buy beardynamics or AKG 240 as you said but I will keep it in mind. BTW idk if there is a difference between using only the mini jack or the the big jack adapter ,since it's already plugged into the AMP DAC only with mini jack.
The less contact points the better, so if you can use it without the adapter always go for that option! I would personally always go K240, Beyer has the tendency to overdo the highs, except for the DT100 and DT150. Bare in mind though; the DT100 has virtually no bass, it's really for monitoring voices. The DT150 had beautiful bass.
Will these suffice for a beginner like me that wants to start to record my own metal music with my guitar through an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett Studio into a daw program like cakewalk or Waveform ? Are they decent for some amateur studiowork ?
@@rollingtroll I need a lot of other stuff like a 7 string guitar, better guitar pickups, audio interface, some great metal plugins. But when I am able to create something good later on I will most def upgrade to better headphones :)
@@rollingtroll Hey, no problem. I am going to order a pair of those K52’s, like right now.. It became the obvious choice when you explained their high frequency characteristics. I already have more expensive semi open back headphones from AKG AND those k240’s, but I need a pair(s) of closed back headphones. Any ideas on the higher priced models that have closed back for recording tracks? I did not like the Audio Technica ATH-M50’s.. too much lower frequency boom and not neutral and balanced enough over the range. I can’t rely on public cyber space opinion apparently..😉👨🏻
I specifically mention in the video that they are great if you are a bass player, haha. Go and watch the video! It answers your question better than I can in the comments.
There are more comfortable headphones but not at this price range. They are really comfy. Don’t forget though; this does not have a microphone. It’s just headphones. If you use a laptop this will not be an issue, the laptop will notice this and use its internal microphone. Same will happen if you use a webcam with a built in microphone so you should be good :)
@@rollingtroll I just want it for recorded lectures, till now I was using earphones due to that bone behind my ears pains very much so doctor suggested me to use over the ear headphones
They wouldn't be horrible for it, but of course they don't have the transparency of a more expensive pair of headphones. I'd consider the AKG K240 Studio for that, if you don't want to spend too much. But in all honesty; I repeat that at least twice in the video so you would have had a quicker answer if you'd watched it. That's what it's for, right? :D.

Hahaha, well spotted! 36 kilos to be exact. That's some years ago now. Still keeping it up. It's a struggle, but worth it. The only downside is that I am now actually cold in the winter :D.
Haha i lost weight and that (also just being able to move around better) is the biggest difference! I'd always wonder why my friends were wearing sweaters while I was in tshirts. 😁
Worse and more expensive than these :) The 206 are notably better than the 202 (the 202 are really shit) but the k52 are way less muddy sounding with refined mids. The highs of the 206 are slightly more transparent but the rest is so much worse that the K52 is a no-brainer in comparison
Yup, the MXH50 is definitely a bit 'thick' sounding. It adds a little oomph. Still, nice headphones for listening to music. The K52 is way more balaned. Just be careful with those highest highs, don't mix in too many as the K52 just does not reveal them.
@@rollingtroll yeah i know but i got many ears trained ear.. no mather what phones i cant get my S..to be good no mather what plugins or nothing.. k52 gives me what i want in a way.. what i hear is what i hear want a clean true sound when i mix nothing added.. i had shure headphones before also .. way to mid... but highest highs what do you mean .. in vocals or making music like electroic music ( sorry my bad english im swedish) .. i have old old akg k 66 .. they are not bad still after many years ( the dont have much bass tho..) .. is there any big difference beteween k66 akn k52 i cant hear to much in the "normal" area
@@hejgoranfesdu The K66 for me goes in the 'bad headphones' category. It rattles and resonates, low end is hollow, highs are harsh but not transparent. So yes, massive difference between the K52 and the K66. What I mean about the highest highs is that the headphones do not reproduce anything over about 14-15khz. There's just nothing there, audibly. So if you are looking for super high frequencies in your mix, and you start pushing them up so you can hear them, it's probably going to be too much on more expensive headphones that do reveal those frequencies. So if you mix on the K52's, I'd steer clear of adding any EQ'ing or compression to frequencies over about 14khz. They are probably already there, they headphones just don't show them :D
I'd love to, but someone would have to buy it for me :D. I can already tell you; It wont be better than the Sony MDR7506 or AudioTechncia AT-HM50x. Video on those coming soon, but that's something you may want to know :)

@@nanotechnicianhq I got a 7 euro k72 now! It’s in rough shape but I wanted to try it, found it at a thrift shop. It’s definitely a serious step up
I’d a Sony MBR-XB550AP.

I got these for $15 US.

Sound is personal preference BTW.
What may sound good to me may sound bad to you.
And that's okay 👌
But if you hook these up to quality equipment and EQ(to my preference)
They're like strapping a pair of old school Cerwin Vegas to your head 🤣

@@rollingtroll ohhh, i see, thanks for the advice :D
@@yukselcaglarbaypnar5301 aye aye!
akg72 are the oppose, bass frequency are brutally cutted meanwhile highs are real good(I thing).
I ve seen some review of akg and it seems a common "problem" the cutted bass
It is interesting how much the author's opinion would change after 2 years
I'll probs buy the Samsons first then the AKGs later.
Yeah I got both Samson SR850 1st and then AKG K52 2nd. I prefer Samson being open back the AKGs are also good because it close backs to stop noise. I got them for dirt cheap so that’s why I have 2 headphones
Fantastic content
Thank you very much!
How do you consider this K52 compared to audio technica m20x? Thanks for you video.
Haven't heard the AT's. Usually AT is good at any price range, since they are twice as expensive they may be a good idea. But at that price range, as stated, AKG K240 Studio :)
Hi! What's the purpose of sticking a coin on the headphones? And what's the process called? I'm hoping to learn more about this.
Is this headphone good for mixing and mastering?
This awesome review. What would u sugest for similar headphones with better highs?
Nothing in that price range. If you have more to spend: Sony MDR7506 or audiotechnica ath-m50x. If you can Afford the audiotechnicas, skip the Sony.
Wow that was quick hahaha. The k92 wouldnt be same w better highs? I want them for amateur studio but also for listening. Im quite a fun of mid-highs
thank you a lot for this, totally needed it
just one weird question i know but hey-
since the headband seems tight enough in its normal state, can you put them on with the headband kinda "resting" behind the nape/neck without worrying about them falling out? instead of the normal way to put em on with the headband on the eer- head, kek
just for personal reasons, since after a while i get uncomfortable with any headband of these type of headsets, hence one of the reasons of why i avoided em until now
Give the Superlux hd 681 a try.
Samson HD680 is the same thing :)
i just bought this headphone and its really good, for gaming, for music, mixing, recording, you just got to get use to it, i was using a cheap "gaming" headset before and it was more bassy so when comparing the two of them, the akg seemed a bit weak on that matter, it is subjective, it all depends on what you are used to listen to, but the akg k52 is way sharper and way cleaner than most of more expensve headphones, you just have to get used to it, and when you do it sounds better than most of headphones i tried, also the virtual surround is perfect on that thing
@@rollingtroll Yes, its sound ok for me! Thanks for your answer and time :D
I know you were recommending the K240, but are there any closed-back alternatives you would recommend around that price point? I think closed-backs would be more convenient for me right now, and I'm still deciding whether the K52s are the best budget option or if there are any other headphones I should consider
Beyer dt150. Bit more expensive though. Really good.
@@rollingtroll Nice, thanks for the quick reply. I looked them up but unfortunately on top of the price they seem pretty hard to drive so I'd need more equipment as well
I'll probably end up trying out the K52s first
@@ghsrkm What are you planning to drive them with?
@@rollingtroll Ideally if I could drive the headphones directly with my computer that would be great, but that's most likely not gonna happen (although I think it should work with the K52 at least). I could grab a FiiO BTR3K if necessary but I'm not sure that's even gonna be enough with that impedance, and getting a stronger amp along with the headphones would already exceed my current budget by quite a bit
Although lately I've been considering just getting the K240s and a decent pair of IEMs to use outside instead, if there aren't any better closed back alternatives at that price
Aren’t they supposed to completely flat for mixing
Nothing ever is. As long as you know your reference and there’s not too much lacking they will at least to some extent work.
Samson SR850 vs AKG k92 is on the same price, im confused which is better?
Akg k52 almost half the price of k92 tho
@@AhmadFauzi-pd2tb k92 for the same price? Get the k92! That should be three times the price of the Samson 😁
I am in doubt between akg k52 and senheiser hd206, do you know something about hd206?
I can't as I don't have a 206, I know the 206 though. The K52 wins this in every way, no competition :).
Are these good for mixing .. can't spend much at this moment
What kind of mixing exactly?
@@rollingtroll Audio Engineering..? Mixing And Mastering..?
Would you recommend them for watching movies, on behalf of their good lows?
Do you need a high quality dac to get the most out of the k52s?
A dac is for turning digital signal into analog, so it depends on how high quality your digital source is. I personally don't use DACs, I just have good sounding streamers and computer audio interfaces. That said, a good headphone preamp is always a good idea but seriously, we are talking about 27 euro headphones here. Though they sound objectively good this is not something you buy as a perfectionist. Just plug them into whatever and it's probably worth your 27 euros ;)
I should add; you will always listen to the weakest link so investing a little bit in everything and keeping the audio chain balanced is never a bad idea.
@@rollingtroll cool, thanks ✌🏼
@@rollingtroll I've noted that in my macbook air I get the best sound (rich and loud) compared to my iPad and phone!

k52 or k92? in my country, these 2,are at the same price. i use it for gaming, and listening vocals, podcasts. thank you
I neve rheard the K92 but it's two steps up from the K52.

Definitely. You can always upgrade later. But if you have more cash, audiotechnica ath-m50x. Very easy choice.

There are more comfortable headphones but not at this price range. They are really comfy. Don’t forget though; this does not have a microphone. It’s just headphones. They wouldn't be horrible for it, but of course they don't have the transparency of a more expensive pair of headphones. I'd consider the AKG K240 Studio for that, if you don't want to spend too much. Can you give your opinion on Sennheiser hd 202 206 vs these
Worse and more expensive than these :)
The 206 are notably better than the 202 (the 202 are really shit) but the k52 are way less muddy sounding with refined mids. The highs of the 206 are slightly more transparent but the rest is so much worse that the K52 is a no-brainer in comparison
@@rollingtroll Thank you so much for your advice. I will immediately follow it

i had mxh50 from audia technicha... but for real my akg k52 is much eiser to mix on
Yup, the MXH50 is definitely a bit 'thick' sounding.
