Picked up the Monkey on 6/13/2023 and the main reason is it small and light and the trail 125 is not available here and the dealer did not know when. But with the 5 speed and clutch and low seat I am very happy with this bike. Not to mention I am 80 years of age and had not ridden for a few years. This bike made it possible for me to handle and the off road (light use ) and enjoy ridding again.
I think that's why I'm so split on buying one! I have a crf150f for screwing around but it didn't put a smile on my face like test riding the monkey did
In the 80's I rode the little Honda tail bikes for fun. The new Monkey is much more capable and just as much fun. Yes I ride large bikes but the smile factor is not the same. Thanks for the review.😅
People who had a 50cc monkey as a kid are now 50 -60 and older. They may are able to buy a mint 50 year old 50cc Monkey but they're too big to ride and enjoy it. Now the new 125 Monkey gives them the nostalgia but in a size they can actually ride!!!!!!!!!!! And it's brand new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video my Canadien friend. Nice video as always. I have a 2021 Monkey & love it. I only use my bike for riding around here in the countryside. At almost 72y.y, my body has been spanked to many times to spank my Monkey on a jarring trail. Have a beautiful day!! Illinois, USA
What a great little big bike! Gotta say it'll be a great camping bike! Great information and great content! Nothing wrong for having a small big bike. Hasta luego!
I became a monkey on my 8th birthday a ZA Monkey with only 50cc, and had only 3 gears, but it ran like hell, and basically rode only off road, it definitely took a beating, and it proved itself as very tough little bike. Now I´m 61, and ride a Indian Roadmaster.
@@DifferentSpokesTV Banned in Australia 2 years ago along with the Super Cub. Crazy expensive 100% Made in Japan models. My father bought me the original 1970 Z50-A Mini Trail K1 in Australia when I was 10 years old and I LOVED it until he bought me an XR-75 so I could compete in children's motocross. However I still have it! And now I am 64 years of age.
I had a Honda Mini Trail 50 when I was a kid (in the 70's) so I would really like to have a Monkey. I have to agree, they seem overpriced. Not sure I want to pay that much for a toy 😥. THANK YOU for the informative video !
@@DifferentSpokesTV Very dicey handling at any kind of speed. Those tiny tyres and rims = massive instability. To be avoided like the plague for learner riders. No way. Full size 100-125cc trail any day.
It's a great bike to learn on. Although you will outgrow it quick. Even when you may want something bigger you won't want to sell it. They are so convenient for just a fun ride around town or the cabin or the farm.
What helmet is that on the guy riding the trail 125 at 8:42 ? I have the 2019 honda monkey, the new one has an extra gear, are there any other changes? its it worth it to trade in for the new model?
Light weight and low to the ground are big advantages off road. This bike might be too small, but the Tenere and Pan American types of bikes are too big. A 125cc to 300cc bike is probably the sweet spot for off roading. I know the Monkey is 125cc, but 9 hp is a bit feeble and the bike is too low to the ground and wheels are too small. The US Army used (maybe still uses) the Suzuki DR125 as its scout bike, if that's telling you anything. That's a 209 lbs., 13 horsepower bike. Army scouts have to use the machine anywhere in the world, over any kind of terrain, in any weather, where there are no roads and there aren't even any trails.
Thanks! Stay tuned. Hopefully by the end of the summer I'll get my hands on an XR150, new to Canada. That might just be the perfect beginner dual sport.
Let's get a group of guys together, each buy a new Monkey, and let's tour the USA from coast to coast, using zero State highways or Interstate roads. Sound like a plan? Of course I'd have to redo the suspension, go full exhaust, ECU flash, significantly upgrade the braking power. But after that, I'm good. 😆
That would be great. I just did a 270 mile trip today on 55 mph roads, calm breeze and held 53-57 all day bone stock. I would love to do a long trip on my Monkey.
I have a latest monkey like in this video and just took it off roading at the A.B.R festival in England this weekend, I have to say I didn't complete the course because the bike was shaking itself to pieces (or so it sounded), I realised the headlamp bucket was hanging out part of the way round, and had to use the fresh toolkit to get it sorted, after that it still rattled but I found out this was just the pressed tin plate vibrating (illegal in UK) . Shame i aborted the rest of the course 1st 😢 on way home, I.was following a 4 speed grom!, I had no extra power or speed, as you say 5th gear is like overdrive, he was losing me a places and he was over loaded with weight in comparison? 🤷♂️ ...but despite this, I love it and am.happy I got rid of 900 ninja to downsize to this..
I have just ordered the Honda Dax St 125 .. the choice was between the Dax and the Monkey.. very hard to choose… but I guess you cant the Dax in the USA, right?
I would think if you try to take it offroad you're going to be whacking the exhaust on rocks and busting off the exhaust studs in your cylinder head. First thing is to re-route the exhaust.

Yes, and I've seen some of those classic Monkey for sale at bike shows. They're more expensive than a new one!
I think the Monkey is a great second bike for many riders. If I had to commute on a bike on a daily basis, it would be up there in my short list
They look great, performance isn't everything. That seat looks comfy and would sell it for me. Great video.
I get a kick out of bringing my red 2022 Monkey to Harley Bike meets! It gets a lot of curiosity from bikers who want to know more about it.

Honda really needs to make a 250cc variant with 20-25hp, would buy immediately 😎
I've seen people putting the 286cc engine into rooms. 100mph.
Even a 200cc would make almost certainly get it.
Yeah, it's not even legal to ride anything under a 150cc on our highways.
You can do a 181cc BBK and it gives you 21hp.
