TMI Project: Stories for Freedom (2024) | Makayla Leon

In school, Makayla (she/her) learns that democracy means freedom yet, as a Black female, she already feels so many stigmas attached to her identity. Exploring the limitations imposed by racism and sexism, Makayla wonders - how she will attain the freedom of feeling good in her own skin.
This live performance was a part of TMI Project’s Stories for Freedom, a 10-session TMI Project storytelling workshop that gathered 10 storytellers who have been cultivating practices of liberation within their work and lives to craft their stories of love, resistance, and growth; stories that can be used to further their work and serve as a blueprint for radical generations to come.
It was presented at The Senate Garage in Kingston, NY on June 26th, 2024, with half of the storytellers performing in-person and the other half beamed in digitally, telling their stories remotely from around the world.
