How Red Bull's F1 weakness was exposed in Monaco GP

  • Red Bull’s second defeat in three Formula 1 races was by far its worst performance of the season. It was comprehensively outgunned, with Max Verstappen managing only sixth place in the Monaco Grand Prix as Charles Leclerc claimed an emotional home victory for Ferrari.
So was this limp Red Bull performance, compounded by Sergio Perez’s big accident on the first lap, merely a one-off caused by the unique demands of the Monte Carlo circuit, or is there more to it than that?

Monaco may be a historic, prestigious and demanding circuit, but it's becoming ever more clear that it's no longer a good race track for modern F1 cars. Yes Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes did most likely have the better car for the circuit, Verstappen being unable to even try an overtake while he is lapping 2 seconds faster than Russel is something I'd call a major issue.

@@Hydraav2 I get where you're coming from, but are they struggling? Or is it more that the other teams -- after 2 full seasons -- are finally beginning to catch up?
Bear in mind that the only race it can be said that he flat out lost was Miami, and that took a MAJOR bit of luck with the safety car's timing. And even then Lando had to drive his ass off to keep Max behind.
If Monaco allowed overtaking like a normal track, no way in Hades he stays in P6.
Unless and until I see a SUSTAINED drop in performance from him or the car, we can only go by his track record of being THE most consistent driver.
RB would've won the constructor's last year even without Checo's points, and Max had more than double the points of P2 in the driver's championship. The rest of the field still very much has an uphill battle in trying to knock Max from the top step.
EDIT: To be fair, the only struggles I recall seeing were the exploding brakes, and the too-stiff suspension at Monaco. Everything else can be chalked up to gains made by other teams rather than an RB decline.

You sure it was Lawson in the Red Bull sim? He was the RBR group reserve driver for the race and was definitely at the circuit (I saw him on camera watching the F2 race).

One thing I've noticed, and didn't see mentioned anywhere, is that when Max didn't have a comfortable pace advantage and needs to force the limit of the car, he made errors. Miami and Q3 Monaco are the prime examples. That's another positive thing Ferrari and McLaren upgrades brought to the championship by being closer and challenging RB pace on some tracks. I hope this trend to continue for the sake of a good championship fight for the fans, and may be a three or four champ contenders next year.

If your only weakness is riding kerbs, but you are superior on every circuit where you have to actually drive on the track, I'd call that a win overall

i think the same happened with "Joe" because they asked the Chinese driver what he wanted to be called and that's how he said it maybe with a slightly harder J than western but it wasn't a Zsh sound

6:10 - RBR says Max had performance loosing floor damage post-collision, Max says he did not and the timesheet says his lap-time was as fast either side of hitting the bollard. Max himself complained he couldn’t drive the RBR20 as fast as he needed to at Miami from the start of the race, which is why he slid wide and hit the bollard in the chicane. This is the same problem, a tight corner riding kerbs - low grip, low speed.

Max could have just carried that Redbull on his head, sprint around Monaco, and win easily.

A tad off-subject, but I think every driver should be eligible for the point for fastest lap. It would make the back half of the grid a little more interesting if they could score more than 0, 1, or 2 points after one-third of the season.
