- In 1984, Joan Sutherland sang the role of "Adriana Lecouvreur" nine times at the Sydney Opera House. In a glowing review, the Daily Mirror reported that "Dame Joan Sutherland enchanted a sell-out audience as the star of a new production of Cilea's romantic drama 'Adriana Lecouvreur' ... dressed in Michael Stennett's gorgeous costumes (Dame Joan) not only looked and acted like a theatre star but sang magnificently."
What does a great prima donna do after she's sung magnificent phrases? Why, she cleans her eyeglasses! I never saw her in the theater in this role, but I did see her in Hoffmann, Lucia, Puritani, Trovatore. IMO, the engineers recorded her very honestly - she had a huge sound that could go higher and higher, without losing quality or agility.

Yes, here she is at 57, still with that incredible overdrive capacity in the voice which allowed her to float over the top of anything else that might have been going on. I heard her do this on a number of occasions live in the theatre, most notably in the big Act III ensemble from "Otello" (E un di sul mio sorriso). I've never heard any other singer who could do it quite as incredibly as Joan could.
Holy shit. This is what everyone means when they say her voice was ABSOLUTELY HUGE.
When you are supremely, absolutely, in control of what you're singing,
you can nonchalantly clean your glasses during a rehearsal....

OMG do u hear Dame Joan's mid-low.ish notes in the beginning, it really gives you an idea of how big and rich her voice was
You get just an inkling here of just how big Joans voice was at the start there
The other woman next to her basically disappears, you can't hear her over Joan's voice
At 57 Joan was amazing. What a great singer !!!!

I SO need to get a copy of this. I bought the DVD (along with others) as an 18th birthday present to myself and I was amazed by Dame Joan's performance.

paso de criticas con mal gusto .....y menos ...si vienen con una agresividad.....que son inadecuadas....en personas que deben saber guardar las composturas........mi gusto por joan sutherland.....y mis apreciaciones......no son para insultar ...sini en cualquier caso para rebatir......y rebatir esa voz bien dificil sera por no decir algo imposible.......

As much as I love and respect Dame Joan, I must admit that ADRIANA LECOUVREUR is not for her (Verismo is not hetr forte).

It is not for Sutherland - lower notes not very beautiful, a lot o wobbles in her voice.
