  • In this second installment of my American Girl outfit accuracy video, we are looking at the two characters from the early 1800s -- Caroline and Josefina -- and determining if their outfits are accurate or not.

    It would be fun to 'remake' them in a more historical style if you get between projects and decide to make more clothes for AG dolls

    This is such a fun and interesting series. You can really tell the quality is higher on the Josefina dresses vs the Caroline ones. I absolutely adore the Josefina meet dress, and those woven belts on her earlier dresses.

    Ahh! This series gives me so much joy and nostalgia! 🥰 Josefina's outfits are some of the most beautiful imo. I wish she had been available when my sister and I got our dolls, but the only ones out then were Felicity, Samantha, and Molly. Jenn got Samantha and I got Molly 😅 our neighbor had Felicity (including the bed!) and later Kirsten (with the trunk). Such good times!

    It’s so funny that there’s this era where everyone was like, you know what, forget the hoops and padding and strangling stays/corsets, we are just gonna wear jammies and flats for a couple decades. To me, most regency dresses all look like nightgowns or a casual dress you would wear today. And from videos I’ve watched, their bust support was a lighter version of a corset or even something more resembling the modern bra. It’s like they almost stumbled into modern dress but then took a u-turn into another century of elaborate long dresses, corsets, layers of petticoats, etc.

    Nice video. I'll defend Mattel on the tags on things like their headbands. US has laws that require those tags. They have to say the type of fiber the item is made of. They have to say the country of origin. They have to say the company that made them or marketed them. They have to have the year on them. They usually have some number (not sure what it's for). They don't have to do it for headbands that are completely plastic. They don't have to do it for shoes that are completely plastic.
    I worked at Toys R Us for years, and I remember one time, we had a surprise inspection from a government worker on our pillow aisle to make sure every pillow (we had a bunch of character pillows) had proper tags from the manufacturers. Took that guy forever to inspect every single pillow.
    I don't care about the tags and cut them right off. I have no plans to sell. Maybe when I get in my 70s. I buy these things all the time where others have cut them off. Makes no difference to me.

    I think Regency (or Napoleonik, which is the more common term in Germany) really is underwhelming compared to both earlier and later fashions. That said... I liked Josefinas chemise and skirt combinations and I ADORE Carolines coat. As you have it and can see it up close, do you think it could be made with BlackSnail's Redingote pattern?
    Also... how can you make me wait A MONTH for the 1850's? The different Victorian fashions are my absolute favourites and waiting that long seems a bit like torture. Really REALLY looking forward to them!

    Always loved her in my Josefina in her Christmas dress. I only had her Christmas outfit with the little head thing. I forget how you said it was pronounced and her main come with outfit which is the I forget how you pronounce to get a top piece that went down and in the skirt. Of course I had the shoes for both and that was it But I preferred her Christmas outfit on her over her come with outfit. I got mine in the early 2000s OK maybe it’s mid to thousands no later than 2006 that’s for sure. But I agree her Christmas outfit Josefina’s Christmas stuff. It was my favorite too for her.

    I absolutely love this series and can't wait to see the next one! I agree, Caroline's blue coat is the best piece of her wardrobe. I absolutely love that deep blue color! I'm really glad so much of Josefina's stuff is historically accurate, as I have her patterns downloaded and am hoping to find her for a cheap price to fix up and make a wardrobe for. Also I agree with another commenter on here about remaking their outfits to be more accurate. As I mentioned on the first video about Felicitys wardrobe, I plan to make Elizabeth's clothes using Felicitys patterns so they'll be more historically accurate, since poor Elizabeth got jipped out of those details. To make Caroline's dresses more historically accurate, wouldn't most of them just need to be longer, as that seemed to be the issue you pointed out the most?

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think longer, and also in lighter colors.

      @@LadyRebeccaFashions so like light blues and light pinks instead of of richer pinks and blues? I know there's a lot of pictures of white dresses from then, but I'm curious about what other colors would have been common, like would they have used any rich vibrant colors for their dresses? Or was it all light and airy? I'm really not sure where to look for correct regency attire as so much of it online is about bridgerton, so that's not exactly helpful.

    I was gifted some stage costumes when I was little. From my great uncles neighbor. It had a nice purple dress with a bonnet kinda like the first one. I unfortunately lost them in a house fire. It was a very strange situation. We were moving from this old house. We had most of are stuff out. We were planning on getting the rest the next day. We stayed at the new place. Then, in the old place, the furnace caught on fire and burnt what was left in the basement. We were lucky we stayed at the new place. We didn't loose to much.

    I wonder if Caroline's short run as a doll has anything to do with the 200th anniversary of the war of 1812. I live in the Great Lakes region, and there were LOTS of celebrations and events for the Bicentennial of the war of 1812.

    I've never taken to Caroline - not because of the character, or the doll itself, but more because all her dresses look more like 1970's maxi dresses and 1812 dresses, to me at least, although the other garments, like the spencers do look more "Regency" to me. All in all, I think Josephina's summer riding and party dresses work far better for the "Regency" look than any of Caroline's.
