After being a woodwind player for about 4 years, I’m getting a trumpet tomorrow. I’m so excited to learn, and this video is already helping me get started.
How's it going now brother? I'm a guitar player but honestly since I listen to a lot of jazz I took a bit of interest for trumpet playing I might pick one up one day if I got the money for one.

xD that's how I feel about playing the saxophone, but if you think about it, weren't you that bad at the sax when you were just starting? When it comes to switching from one instrument to another with the same exact mouthpiece, like a trombone to euphonium, sax to clarinet, etc., then it's easy. All you have to do is learn the notes, but learning a completely different family of instrument is like starting all over again, and you go back to stage one, playing with just the mouthpiece. I play the trombone, and I have for a year now. I'm doing great on it so far, but since I like to try new things, I'm trying to learn the trumpet, bringing me to this video, and even though it's the same family as the trombone, it feels like I'm starting all over again. The mouthpiece just feels so tiny, and it makes me wonder how they do it, but then I think back to when I was first starting the trombone and I realize it's exactly the same. It's like my lips just got a complete reset, and I have to go back to long tones and what not to get them in shape.
Shockingly, when my bff taught me, I did really well, I was able to hold a note for a long time and I hadn't even picked up a trumpet in my life(not even a toy one), but as soon as I got home, It's like I had a spirit attached to me that made me play so well and it detached from me when I left from school.
One on one lessons are way better to other types, and from my experience, right after a lesson makes you feel so motivated and powerful for your instrument.

From a brass player, Trumpet and other brass are hard to learn at first, but once you learn to buzz and read music its really easy. Most brass its easy, but trumpet/horn/similar are harder in my opinion. My main instruments are guitar, tuba, and trumpet, and guitar is way harder than both. At least in my opinion.

I'm a 38-year-old artist. I thought that it would be good for my mind and even my artistic side of my mind if I learn to play an instrument. I chose the trumpet because I've had a long deep appreciation for it. I have never before today laid my hands on a trumpet. (Just got it in the mail) I looked online and watched a few videos trying to make a sound. I made a sound here and there but then I found your video and now I feel like I might be able to do this! You're a great teacher Thank you so much I will be continuing with your program!
I am wanting to play cornet, I'm 78 years old, I'm a jazz clarinet player, been playing since I about 20 and seriously since 1980, I have no cornet yet but I've just been using a mouthpiece, this video is great, while I'm hear I have a tale to tell. One of my best friends sady gone to join the heavenly band was a freelance classicle/anything trumpet player so knew his stuff, he started doing trumpet master classes at our local univesity, he told me that the first thing he did with the students was to play a long C, he had to tell some of them that they had a bad emboucher, they of course said no that is the way I was taught but Bill insisted they followed his advice, he said eventually they all took his way and agreed with him.
You are a fantastic teacher. These videos are great. I am a guitar teacher myself, but recently decided to try out something completely different musically. I figured the Trumpet was a good instrument to take up given my love of jazz. Thanks for posting these videos!
Straight up man, i've been playing trumpet for years i'm a HS Junior in wind symphony, i noticed after marching season my high note were so sharp and my accuracy sucked and i know i picked up trumpet later than everyone else and went to review the basics and really see if i'm playing correctly and I wasn't, had to learn to suck up my pride. Thanks for this.
It's pretty common for the trumpet chops to be a bit 'unsteady' (there's surely a better word) after marching season. The good news is you're aware of what you sound like and you've now got a great chance of refining your classical chops again. Be patient and insist on accuracy in your practice. Good luck!
Thanks for great.a Video. I'm an old guy trying to learn flugelhorn and this discussion is exactly what I needed. The part about the corners of the mouth and the lips really helped me finally get this. Thanks again.
Megan Laws Aww it's ok, I just bought mine and sound like a dying goat choking down a screaming grandma. My top lip and index finger knuckle hurt; we'll get used to it!

Wow, it's hard to get a good buzz.,but when you do ;) oh yeah. Cheers man I'm holding a note so easy now. 15 minutes ago I didn't think the buzz would ever come. It feels good cheers again
I started the buzzing. It was tough at first. I couldn't manage a sustained sound but as I kept practising the sustain got better. My kids heard the sound coming from my room at one point and said they thought there was a bee in my room. Now, over the coming days I will aim for a mosquito sound. Not sure how that's gonna happen though but I'll keep believing. I really wanna do this as I've played another instrument for over 2 decades and I really want to add the trumpet to my accomplishments.
Sounds like you've got a great start on playing your trumpet. The 'make a buzz' concept helps establish the concept, but don't stress if your buzz doesn't sound just like mine or someone else's. If you can take that concept and get a good tone on the trumpet that's the goal. When you're actually playing the trumpet you won't pinch the lips together quite as much as when you buzz without the trumpet. Good luck!
Thank you for these vids. I am a new trumpet player and actually ordered my very first tumpet today! Plus.. Shaq practicing free throws....lmao suuure buddy!

Oh God! I hope you got it back. I remember when I left my music book on the bus Mr packer acted as if I had discarded a Torah. Keep that thing and guard it well friend!
I have ordered a trumpet, though I have been playing trombone for a year, which is my main instrument. However I find it easier to learn sight reading through transcribing full band/choir songs, but I also need to test my treble clef notes and currently rely on a band which takes time to give feedback. I am looking forward to my first notes on trumpet using this.
It's been a while since I posted my concession on the guitar point, but looks like I need to do it again. Just wanted to illustrate that since there are no gear settings on a trumpet, the player is the primary factor in tone production and quality. Hopefully the point on trumpet tone is not lost. For the record, Clapton is god, and I love guitar players! :-)
All the guitar players need to lay off. Yeah, it may not have been the best reference but this isn't a guitar video. I've been playing guitar for 25 years and IT IS easier to initially play a clear note (not chords) on guitar than on trumpet. Yes there are many other issues with guitar like attack, string buzz, finger placement, different picks, amp setups, etc. But I could find someone who has never played guitar, make them press down on middle C (5th fret g string), pluck the note and it will sound the SAME as when I do it. Not so with trumpet.
That doesn't apply to classical guitar or any guitar played with nails. Achieving a good sound requires a lot of training, nail shaping, angle of attack, etc. That's true for electric guitar though
Guitarist have it so easy.. some of us just does not seem to understand this. Within 5 minutes of playing you are capable of playing wonder wall and stealing every girl at the party’s attention.
I'm not sure how to make the buzzing sound properly or for a long time. it sounds really sporadic and unclean. my cheeks are tight though and the corners of my lips...how do I fix that?
I think what you're asking about is breath control. Start with a really big breath and a steady exhale. Try blowing out for 5 seconds three different ways: just your lips (no trumpet), just the mouthpiece, and then with the trumpet. With a little practice it'll come!
Thanks I am in junior high band and I just started playing the trumpet so I needed some help and you help a lot watched it multiple times and I’m improving lots so thanks so much

+The Guy Eli i just started band i actually got my trumpet about 3 days ago I have relived almost all the other trumpet players also play snare in drum line and vis versa I am curious what do you play in the drumline?
Man, I'm buzzin' all over the place! My cheeks are tingling. (please remember don't do this while operating a motor vehicle because "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving"
I just started playing trumpet few days ago in band at my school and I did pretty good in first day. I struggled but I got the sound. Few days later I try my trumpet and I can't make the sound. Was that pure luck? BTW I'm kinda sick and my throat hurts, not too bad but does that contribute to my trumpet playing? I really want to master this by Monday and be able to play notes and catch up with my band. Plz I need help.
+Edward An Being sick never helps your trumpet playing. Try backing off a bit (when you're well) and focus on the best sounds you can get on long, low notes without pushing the range uncomfortably high. Good luck!
I remember watching this in middle school trying to learn how to play haha 10 years later rewatching because I just got another trumpet wanna give it another try
Thank you Thank you Thank you sooo much!! I could never grasp the concept of creating a clean buzz with my lips. And your video helped me finally understand!
Pretty great teacher. At first I had no idea what he meant by lip buzz - he kept adding this high hum to it which I thought was weird because mine was pichless, more of a whisper. But just a minute later I had the buzz down and realized the pitch wasn't coming from his or my vocal chords at all, but the lips themselves.

Ella Yeh it’s all the vibrations your lips are making lol
Ella Yeh nice profile pic lol
Joe Klinck thanks for getting, and explaining what I meant in a clearer way than I did.
That doesn't apply to classical guitar or any guitar played with nails. Achieving a good sound requires a lot of training, nail shaping, angle of attack, etc. That's true for electric guitar though
yeah but why not say piano, why always guitar. Its not a bad example its just tiring for guitar players.
Lol
Guitarist have it so easy.. some of us just does not seem to understand this. Within 5 minutes of playing you are capable of playing wonder wall and stealing every girl at the party’s attention.
ive played clarinet for 3 years and this has helped a lot with me trying out trumpet
I'm in 6 th grade beginning band and this tutorial helped me so much to learn how to buzz.
Thank you so much for sharing this!! So helpful!
his eyes make me feel weird
😂😂😂
Your words make us feel weird.
Way too intense.
Because he blows trumpet for a long time made the eye get closer than normal .
I know
I buzzed very well
Cause I already play trumpet
And my teacher is amazing
Thank you so much this is helping a lot I have band in highschool and the tips you gave are helping me a crap ton
Was thinking about buying a trumpet this video was great at explaining how to use a trumpet sold me on getting one
omg thank you it worked I made it to band
I'm not sure how to make the buzzing sound properly or for a long time. it sounds really sporadic and unclean. my cheeks are tight though and the corners of my lips...how do I fix that?
Same.
I think what you're asking about is breath control. Start with a really big breath and a steady exhale. Try blowing out for 5 seconds three different ways: just your lips (no trumpet), just the mouthpiece, and then with the trumpet. With a little practice it'll come!
My trumpet exploded. Stupid sisters...
+ Ifritmaster Games what xD
The corners of my lips keep going into a smile.
I just got my trumpet a few days ago, and I currently sound like a duck with a sore throat
Gabby same
Same
That is ok. You just keep practicing and you WILL get better. Don't give up!
How are you doing 11 months later
Hahahaha

I'm learning trumpet for my secondary instrument unit in grade 10 instrumental music class. I've played alto saxophone for 4 years so it's a challenge changing my embouchure ahh
I'm doing the exact same thing! It seems impossible
Kristina Palattao same here cx
Same. I have been playing oboe for a while too.
hey. I also want to learn trumpet but i can't free buzz. How did you start?
Collegiate level sax player here, can't make a good sound on trumpet to save my life
sax player for 6 years, then I took off the mouth piece and stared buzzing on the neck opening to play the saxpet. thought I should play an actual brass instrument instead.
How does it sound :D
no reed? no problem.
I do the same thing with my clarinet
Before this i had never played a trumpet before so this was really helpful
I am a music education major and I have to write out a lesson plan on how to play the trumpet. This was a great first video to watch. I already have a basic idea and this definitely helped with my assignment! :)
Glad it helped. I continue to discover how different playing the trumpet is from teaching it!
I'm in 6th grade beginner band I am getting my trumpet tommorow
Percussion was my first choice in 6th grade, now I'm a junior in high school playing in the drumline, never learned how to play the trumpet until today!

Good luck!
eTrumpet Lessons Thanks man
Get a teacher, online videos won't help.
Well, they will. You just won't develop the right technique necessarily
James Bailey Well I have a band teacher. Now I can play from C to high C :)
Learning the trumpet or any instrument is on my bucket list
I remember watching this in middle school trying to learn how to play haha 10 years later rewatching because I just got another trumpet wanna give it another try
not gonna lie, it felt pretty good when I succeeded to do the buzz
finally! I'm getting somewhere!
Yes, G's are generally fascist. You might try F's - they're much more democratic! ;-)
Great clarification on the trumpet buzz! As you describe, it's the lips, not the voice. Good luck!
that shaq joke was funny caught me off guard lol
Took a while but I did it! :D
I love ur lessons there really helpful to me and I'm barely 10 yrs old
+Monique Perez Glad you're finding success. Keep it up!
I'm a freshman in highschool and have wanted to learn trumpet for so long!! I am finally getting one for Christmas. I want to learn and perform for my band director before a competition and show him I can do it

“Kobe practices free throws”
*That didn’t age well*
Andrew Harris I know right, I had to pause the video and see how long ago this was posted
Alexis Marie same
Who else is watching in 2020band when he says Kobe practices his free throws it’s just a moment of silence
Yh, it aged like warm milk
Great tutorial, Just can't get the "buzzing" down for some reason haha
Keep at it, I eventually got it down. Pitch on the other hand...
Did you respond to yourself
a good way to buzz is to fart into it
Helped a lot. Thanks
Thanks for the help i just got my trumpet today and wanted to learn
My mouth is completely numb and my neighbours probably think Ive lost my mind. Not quite sure if this is the right instrument for me...
aha me too... I can play piano, harmonica, guitar and the accordion. Found my grandpa's old trumpet and thought- "how hard can it be??" aha It's been a bit harder than I thought it would be... :P
Im a woodwind trying to learn brass and im not doing very well either
@ Yeah, I'm still trying to get that buzz...
Since this was 4 years ago, what’s your progress look like???
