  • After a chilly start Wednesday with wind chills in the low to mid-20s, we finally see some relief. Temperatures are on the rise, hitting 51 degrees in Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville this afternoon. That's almost 10 degrees warmer than Tuesday, though still slightly below our average for this time of year. Wednesday's winds will be much calmer, ranging from calm to just 5 miles per hour. That makes things feel much more comfortable, especially if you're heading to Wooly's Winter Wonderland.
Be prepared for temperatures to drop quickly into the 30s by evening, so bundle up! The temperature will dip below freezing overnight the next few days. The sun we see on these short days will do little to warm us. The winter solstice on Thursday brings the official beginning of winter, the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Numerous "white flag shelters" will be in operation for those who need a warm place to get in out of the cold. The rest of the week looks dry and mostly clear. Temperatures will be close to the normal for December in North Carolina with chilly mornings close to the freezing mark and moderate afternoons with highs around 50 degrees. There is no more precipitation in the 7-day forecast.
Christmas Day - Monday, Dec. 25 - is likely to see some sun with highs in the upper 50s. It has been more than a decade since snow fell on Christmas Day in Raleigh. In 2010, snow began as the holiday ended, and Dec. 26, 2010 measured 6.7 inches of snow at RDU.
