Hi! I love your videos! I have asked to manage memorials and had no response but have now figured out how to deal with that successfully. This is what you do: 1) When you request the transfer, include your relationship, number AND this is the most important part CHECK THE SEND A COPY of the email box. 2) Save that copy of the email AND make a note on your calendar for one week out. 3) If you have not received any communication from the memorial manager after that one week, FORWARD the copy of your email to Find A Grave and ask for their assistance. 4) Find A Grave will send them a message and if they still do not respond (I think it was another week), they will make the transfer to you. I have had a lot of success with this procedure. In some cases if I can tell that the manager is still active (you can go to their profile and do a sort by date of their resent added memorials) and has a lot of memorials I have sent a follow up request (again have a copy sent to yourself).
Thanks, Michelle. I make a few FindaGrave requests for edits and other stuff, but I have not been as thorough as I need to be to keep track of those requests. I probably have a few still out there, that I have forgotten about.
Sure! Did you know you can see the suggestions you’ve made? It’s the first option in your profile but it defaults to pending requests to you. You can select the suggestions you have made and use the filters to look for specific ones.
@@michelleantonson7737 Thanks! I checked and I have no open requests. That's really great information you shared. Good luck in your future genealogical travels.
What great information! Will definitely put this in my favorite links. I found my father's entry that was created by the US Veterans Affairs Office, and sent update suggestions. The virtual cemetery is fantastic, as well as the ability to leave notes/memories and add photos. Thank you so much!
I have been leaving flowers 💐because of you, and newly learned about Virtual Cemeteries. Genius! One other thing my husband taught me, and i think is even MORE important, is editing to add the PARENTS by adding their memorial ID. WOW... so many great things we can do to help future family history seekers! 💕
Thank you so much. I was just on my grandmother’s FindAGrave page last week and was wondering who was managing it. Going to request the transfer now. The manager is managing 463,000 graves!! Great video as usual. Edited to say,: what a fascinating journey this turned out to me. Just requested one transfer from an individual living in Victoria, Australia who manages 16 million. Australia only has a population of 26 million!
@carokat1111 I hear you. As an Aussie who loves contributing to FindAGrave I've seen some of these mega managers. Some are easier to deal with than others. I believe they obtain the burial registers for an entire cemetery and have memorials for all graves within that location. Repeat process for hundreds of cemeteries. Often across multiple cities, towns and separate States.
@ Thank you. I didn't mean to be rude. I was just shocked by how FindAGrave works. It's been an eye-opener for me. So far I have found all the managers have transferred to me and it was nice to get a message from one of them interested in what I was doing.
I’ve gleamed alot of good info from find a grave. Of course I go back and confirm everything I find. I went to a beautiful cemetery in Newton, Mass to visit three graves of ancestors who I found on find a grave and while I was there- I found it was an entire family plot with 22 ancestors. It filled in so many blanks and was an exciting discovery. Now I’m going to try to catch find a grave up with these new (old) graves.
Connie thank you for covering Find A Grave. Unfortunately not everyone is cooperative on transferring memorials. I made a request for a transfer for my GGrandmother. The person refused claiming "direct" descendant when his descendant had been the third husband married to my GGrandmother. I even appealed through Ancestry to get the transfer but had no luck.
Thank you for the info. I've used Find a Grave, but didn't know about all the features. One thing I did, after my mother-in-law passed away, I found several really old pictures of people who were not related to us. I posted them to their memorials on Find a Grave and heard back from some of their relatives who were glad to have those pictures.
Also, if you manage a grave you can add your relationship to this grave. Click edit and go to the bottom and toggle "Close Relative" and pick the relationship, "I am their …" - Most people don't see it at the bottom.
Thanks Connie. While I have used the virtual cemetery I haven't appreciated it enough. I was reminded to make my life easier and do this to help put family groups into one place. Duh, such a simple concept! Kicking myself for working harder.
Love the virtual cemetery. I used it last time I was at a large cemetery where I have 16 relatives buried to find everyone and put some silk flowers on their graves.
Thank you so much for the information on Find a Grave I had lots of photos of graves but had not put them on and the info on virtual graves is awesome thank you so much
Thankx, Connie. I use Find - A - Grave a lot. I have one question though. Sometimes when I bring up a memorial I am asked if I want to “Sponsor” a memorial. Do you know what that means?
It means they will remove the ads for that memorial. Personally, I just put an ad blocker on Firefox and go there when I want to view Find a Grave.. when I'm recording videos to avoid the annoying ads.
Sometimes Findagrave takes over management of “Fallen Graver’s”memorials - ones who have passed away. In some cases for this if you are sending an edit to one managed by Findagrave there may be a button asking if you want to take over management of that memorial.
Very interesting! What's the ad blocker you use for Firefox? The ads on FAG can be prolific as well as dangerously misleading to direct you to a scammer. Thanks so much for a great vlog!
Sad to see that adding a virtual cemetery doesn't seem to work today. I hope that is quickly sorted out. Can't wait to be able to use the before unknown to me feature!
I found that while it doesn't work to just add a virtual cemetery, if you go to manage virtual cemeteries (even if you have none) - you can add the virtual cemetery there.
Hi Connie! I hope you don’t mind me asking here. Is there a way you can find “paupers” Graves like this? Or at least an easier way? I’m newish to genealogy and cannot for the life of me find my grandads grave in London and have no idea where to start :)
Hellos Connie, Thanks for covering this topic. I have read all the instructions and followed them, without response. The person who manages one of my ancestors (showing several errors) has thousands of memorials. He also has a note that he will not answer any correspondence. I read all the instructions (for requesting a transfer) and followed them, without response. Do I just keep trying, or is there another way to reach the people in charge and get a transfer?
Hi ... you could try appealing directly to Ancestry support team. Another radical option is to create a new version of the same memorial. Note on it that you're relates. Make it better and more accurate than the original etc. If someone later asks FindAGrave to merge the two, you should be consulted.
The virtual cemetery great to try to chip at brick walls. I have two floating trees trying to decide the parentage of my 4th GG. There is a huge loud group on ancestry saying it is one set (with not a single source among them but seems that they have all copied each others tree to the point where ancestry is suggesting them as parents for 4GG.) and on find a grave a different set listed with no source either but you wonder if it is personal over there the information passed verbally and they could be right yet no source except headstone. Anyway virtual cemetery would be another way to look at whole picture to try to confirm this through place and time and fan club etc. Thank you for this!
If you are a manager of a page do ask the person querying about a grave - especially if asking vitals or personal info. what their relationship is and tell them you'll get back to them about it. Check as Connie mentions. I made a mistake and gave light-weight innocent info. to a complete stranger once. So don't do that. Fortunately it was nothing that would be wrong on my part information-wise.
I don't believe it's true that you HAVE to be related at all. It's up to the manager whether they want to transfer it or not. I've asked for transfers when I've been working on some photo requests because I tend to check all the details and see who else is buried in the plot and check that they are connected to family members if not already. Sometimes it's easier than putting through lots of update requests, both for me and the manager. I wouldn't do that if their family managed it but in my cases there are people who do mass uploads of memorials that have no connection to the person
That doesn’t make a lot of sense if that’s the rule if you are asking to manage someone as who is living that is related as a relative to a GGrand when they died in 1840 and are a 4th Great-Grandparent ? 😊 Guess they should change that rule.
@SpeakTruthBeKind yes I agree the rules should probably be updated. If it's an immediate family member, parent, grandparent, great grandparent, then unless the existing manager is a closer relative, they must transfer to you. Beyond that level it's currently at their discretion.
It was pretty disappointing. If the memorial creator had just moved on (death? Lost interest? ) then the memorial will remain in limbo in perpetuity. The only way I got around it was by writing up his bio, changing the doc to a jpg and uploading it as a picture. Worked.
Also, I would love your advice on a format for the memorials you manage. I add transcribed obituaries when I have them, with citations and notes when appropriate. I say that the obituary is redacted if I leave living relatives names out. But I have seen some managers say they would add obituaries published after, I think it was the early 1900’s because of copyright issues. Do you know of anything about that? Thanks again!
If needed, just take a photograph of the obituary and post it to the memorial. No one can delete your photo. The manager does have the ability to reorder photos.
Several years ago, I discovered that someone who was not a family member created a Find A Grave memorial for my paternal grandfather. It was full of errors and even had an incorrect first name, a shortened version of his full first name. I recall paying $5 to take over the memorial, after which I deleted it. I didn't try to reach the person who originally created the memorial.
I asked for the transfer of my grandfather about 10 years ago. The manager refused because she was something like a 2nd cousin to my grandfather's 2nd wife (not my grandmother). My grandmother and grandfather were buried together. The 2nd wife was off somewhere about 300 miles away. I finally emailed F-G and within minutes I had the transfer. On the other hand, someone has "killed" my husband's aunt. I wrote to explain that she is still living. They will not accept my word for it and that memorial is still there with death date unknown. If you aren't a parent, sibling or child of the deceased (or in this case, the UNdeceased), you may have a problem.
Even my reply to your comment was blocked trying to explain. Sometimes historical events have words in them if you were to spell out WWI the words might get blocked by TH-cam thinking it was a violation of community standards.
@ I can still see your previous reply. I don't think it got blocked. I was just curious cause there is another channel i watch called grimmlifecollective who post graves frequently and nothing ever happens to his post.
I've been using Find-A-Grave for years, but never knew about the virtual cemeteries or flowers. Thanks for letting us know what they are! Just a heads up: I came across a memorial of my great grandmother, managed by someone who managed thousands of memorials. She had blocked all messages to her. That was a couple years ago, so maybe Find-A-Grave has changed, but I was pretty irritated by no being able to even reach out to this person, who wasn't related.
I saw that once and was still able to get a message through by using the request a change - I just scrolled down to the message part and sent that. It worked! Good luck!
I’ve seen a lot of that; where people manage dozens or hundreds of gravesites, even though they’re not related to them. My great grandmother on my father’s side for example. While I appreciate that they went through the effort to document and even photograph the graves, I sometimes wonder about their motivations to go through so much time and effort. Is it a fascination with graveyards, ego, morbid obsession or what?
@@chuckschulz9721 I think they are trying to be helpful. A person has to create a memorial to add the photo of the headstone. So that is why they are the manager of that memorial. They probably look through obits to find information that they can add. In the county that my parents are buried, there is a group of people who visit cemeteries and take photos. They then create memorials on find a grave. The person who manages my parents memorials say that they will gladly transfer any memorial to a family member.
I recently visited a remote "bush cemetery" here in Australia ... like a pioneer cemetery up a steep overgrown track on the side of a hill, a few km (couple of miles) outside a country town. About 130 years old. It predates the town itself. Only about a quarter of the graves still have headstones. Large eucalyptus trees surround the small cemetery and the whole site was covered ankle deep in fallen leaves, bark, and branches. All the headstones were already on FindAGrave. But the entry gate had a list of all the known burials (about 50 from memory). I made a point of adding all the missing graves memorials, some of whom were related to those with headstones. Verified it all with BDM and historical newspaper records of course. Hopefully someone finds the information useful some day 😊
A great feature for virtual cemeteries would be a map, if the system could take the gps coordinates or at least the cities and plot them on a map for for us.
I agree it would be nice in-app. As an alternative I use the Google Maps Pro desktop app, which lets me do other geolocation research too (birth places, census locations, etc.) Maybe it could be useful for you too?
I've had graves transferred to me because I suggested an edit - and I don't want them. What infuriates me are people who post a grave before the person is even buried. Someone did that to my mother, and I was furious. At least be courteous to the descendants and wait a few days after reading an obit. I've had people unaffiliated with a family post photos without permission. They never explained where they got the photo or why. I didn't appreciate someone posting a photo of my grandfather, and they aren't even remotely related. I sent a message to one person asking if they had permission from my cousins to post my aunt's photo. The photo was removed.
I love FindAGrave, but please know there are a lot of mistakes on there. Someone put my great great grandparents in the wrong cemetery. They wouldn't accept my edits, even after I created the page for the correct family cemetery, until I told them I know they're there because it's on my cousin's property on my road.
Allora questi match hanno etnie diverse tra loro ma una etnia asia meridionale sono tutti d'accordo tra di loro mentre io ho greco e italia e medio orientale con alcuni di loro e ho una triangolazione con segmento uno contro due di 9cm
FindAGrave’s “HELP” explains that transfer requests are to be honored if you are a close relative as per: Memorials are transferred for relatives with these close relationships: child, spouse/partner, sibling, parent, grandchild, great-grandchild, grandparent, great-grandparent, niece/nephew, great-niece/nephew, aunt/uncle, great-aunt/uncle, or first cousin. This would include adoptive, step and in-law versions of these relationships. If two members are related within these guidelines and both would like to manage the memorial, the member with the closer relationship should be given management. Always explain your relationship in the request! Keep in mind that the memorial manager may also be related to the memorial and may not make the transfer. You may also want to include your specific interest in the memorial.
If you manage a memorial for someone who is a close relative, you can document your relationship using the Edit -> “Mark as a close relative” function. This helps you remember but also would explain it for someone else who might be considering asking you for management.
Even though I have been doing genealogy for 40+ years, I always learn something new from you. Thank you so much!
We all learn from each other. Thanks for the comliments.
Hi! I love your videos!

1) When you request the transfer, include your relationship, number AND this is the most important part CHECK THE SEND A COPY of the email box.

Find a grave is asking for you to pay $10 so the memorial won't have ads and you have a few more options with the design of the memorial
Sponsorship gives you the opportunity to add more photos to the memorial if you desire.

Most just create a memorial on Find A Grave and put that they were buried at sea.

They WONT add the obituary after a certain date.
If needed, just take a photograph of the obituary and post it to the memorial. No one can delete your photo. The manager does have the ability to reorder photos.
Thanks! I hadn’t thought about that!
I figure if the obituary is in the public domain, eg available on a free obituary site online, it can be added to FindaGrave
Some headstone photos have more living relative names on them that the obituary.

Hopefully someone finds the information useful some day 😊
See the tip by @michelleantonson7737 in the comments here about how to have success. It's a great idea.
@KimberlyGreen Great suggestions!
Your example showed in her comments that she was willing to transfer the memorial
I believe they put an embargo on recently deceased memorials now. Maybe a month after death or thereabouts.
Agreed, not cool.
Whu does u-tube take your videos down? I have never seen you do anything wrong.
It’s an algorithm looking for specific words.
I love FindAGrave, but please know there are a lot of mistakes on there. Someone put my great great grandparents in the wrong cemetery. They wouldn't accept my edits, even after I created the page for the correct family cemetery, until I told them I know they're there because it's on my cousin's property on my road.
FindAGrave’s “HELP” explains that transfer requests are to be honored if you are a close relative as per:
Memorials are transferred for relatives with these close relationships: child, spouse/partner, sibling, parent, grandchild, great-grandchild, grandparent, great-grandparent, niece/nephew, great-niece/nephew, aunt/uncle, great-aunt/uncle, or first cousin.
