    This is easily the most honest, frank conversation of all the roundtables. They talk about gender and race the way normal people talk about it, not the way people with agents and PR to worry about talk about it, like the other roundtables.

      Oh yeah. Amy's argument for more women and POC convinced me and was more practical than any of the corporate, "oh look! We have these marginalized groups. Aren't we pRoGreSsive?" type campaigns.

    Omg the women from Gilmore LITERALLY embodies the show the way she’s talks is so fast like the script- her hair- the way she dresses...WOW

      it's said a lot on Gilmore behind the scenes that Amy (writer) was basically the embodiment of stars hollow and lorelai, the actors would actually study her to get the speaking pace right

    Maybe it's because I am an avid television watcher (not too much into movies other than indies and docs) but these people are just as famous to me as if I saw any actor. Even more so because I am in awe of their vast talent. These people make me laugh, cry, think, and smile regularly. Thank you!

    Gosh. This may be one of my FAVOURITE ways people have navigated these topics. Sensitive to the issues, but not doing the whiny "everyone's too PC these days, let us say our jokes" thing. They REALLY broke it down in an earnest way, particularly the "representation =/= endorsement" conversation. God that was so good. We have to accurately represent the world, and the world IS offensive -- otherwise you make it seem like the world is all okay and it's not.
    God I loved this one.

    Pamela Adlon does voices in animation since 1992. Pamela Adlon said voice-overs saved her career. As successful as her child-actress years had been, she struggled to find parts in her 20s. Pamela Adlon won won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for playing Bobby Hill, Clark Peters and Chane Wassanasong in King of the Hill: Bobby Goes Nuts.

  • @shaunrobson4278

    Seriously, this episode should be required viewing for any -- ahem -- cultural commentators and entertainment bloggers (on all sides of the ideological aisle) on how fraught the comedy scene is right now.
    Kudos to all for such a thoughtful, mature, and necessarily unvarnished analysis of what comedy should be.
    It will be interesting to see how this current period of Recreational Outrage and Politicised Umbrage fits into the longer timeline of creativity, censorship, and authoritarian repression, ie. echoes of when the Master of Revels unilaterally shut down all the theatres in the time of Shakespeare. Not to mention, current laugh-killing cultures like Iran, Cambodia, and the Church of Scientology ...
    And at the risk of sounding like the title of a country and western song -- Good job Lacey Rose !

    To the point about things being watchable 10 years later and not wanting to root them in trends of today: I really disagree with this, media that is specific to its time and place is always far more fascinating than media that tries to be universal. That's why period pieces are always being made and why its fun to go back and look at what people were thinking and acting like in the past.

    • @TNDCBaby
      @TNDCBaby 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's more about being able to follow the story. Dear White people makes so many random cultural references that someone not in the know has to Google every other sentence. I love it but I also know enough about a lot of topics that I can follow it. Like in that clip I know who Frederick Douglas, Carlton Banks, and Colin Jobst (?) are so that joke doesn't go over my head. That's a softball but there are so many of them that people can miss and you wonder will people 10 years from now get it?
      If you root too much of it in pop culture, which changes from deaced to decade, can the story still connect with people when it's being rerun in the future?

    • @AbiSaad
      @AbiSaad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      exactly! you get to see how people lived at the time the show was filmed (or settled) and you learn a lot about it or if it's an era you experienced you get to remember it. That's why I love Gilmore Girls so much. Is SO especifically early 00's that is reminiscing of that time. I grew up around the 2000's and my mom watched GG every week so is like time traveling to me. And sure, they reference pop culture media from waaay before but they are generally classics and I have a lot of fun figuring them out, every time I do a rewatch I catch something else and makes me feel more "cultured" lol

      Pamela and Louis go way back. She knows what he was like then and now better than just about anyone, but she can't really say anything in his defence without throwing herself under the bus, which wouldn't help Louis anyway. I thought Amy did a great job saying some of what Pamela couldn't without dropping any names.

  • @AbiSaad
    @AbiSaad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I liked what Amy said about building an audience. building trust and ,in a way, a relationship with the characters is what makes them so close to our hearts, so endering and beloved. that's a huge problem with today's media tbh. you watch 500 shows because there are so many and they are all so good and on top of that you consume each one all at once, forget them and move onto the next one. sometimes even confusing history lines. I reeally like to binge the whole series when is done but over a looong period of time, only 1 or 2 episodes in a row each day/week but 1) I am not that patient and 2) it's a super bad thing to do because it doesn't pay the network in real time for it so it doesn't help to get more seasons/show support for the creators.

    There is a l level of care that goes into crafting a joke genuinely especially if it’s about a taboo topic.
    It needs to be subversive & it can’t be a obviously point of view.
    It’s going to feel like a cheap undeserving laugh.
    Everyone on the panel does a good to great job at finding authentic laughter of our reality/society

    • @theogoldberg8919

      mike lyles Yes but I want to nuance that. Today we are laughing about everything and absolute derision is proned as a value. Some subjects are really serious and we have to think, be critical and not be 2 neurones people laughing about everything all the time. Which in my opinion accompanies a tendency of egalitarian stupidity where we should all be the same. FUCK NO!!!! You know what I mean?

    I love Amy Sherman but what she said about women not being helpful to other women. Its a very skewed perspective to put out there. I have had similar experience too. And I have to take a step back and think about why that is. Yes, sometimes women pull down other women, but there's a reason for that. Patriarchal system forces this type of dynamic between women. Its not necessarily inherent to them. Just saying. Don't blame the women blame the system.

    Disappointed that this was filmed before the Roseanne situation, if it was after there could of been some really interesting conversation added

      I actually think it's interesting how many wilfully ignored how insanely despicable Roseanne proved her self to be. Exposure of that is secondary, most of the time he people know and tolerate.

      Cosby is a rapist. Can you watch it knowing that the creator and star is a rapist? Can you seperate one from the other.

    did i miss something about what Pamela said about key grips... she said that out of 800 in the union, 400 are women... that's half, so what's the problem?

    • @Katt1989
      @Katt1989 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She misspoke. Women make up less than one % of the gaffers and key grips in the industry.

      I personally don't know the actual numbers so I can't speak on what the other reply said about her misspeaking.
      However, if she didn't mispeak and what she said is true, if the actual number is half but only men are on the list they're hiring from, that's a glaring omission that definitely seems intentional. Like if there's a 50/50 chance of getting a red gumball vs a green gumball and you and everyone else consistently gets 25 green gumballs in a row, you're definitely gonna think it's rigged somehow.

    A lot of people, not just women, wouldn't respond well to Amy's personality. She's aggressive and I imagine more so when she's actually upset at work. Her saying that other women never helped her career isn't all that surprising when you consider female group dynamics.

    I just don’t understand why we can’t have a black comedy that isn’t about being black, why can’t they just have a storyline that’s funny and just about being a person in life why does it have to be about race or the trouble all the time
