The more i listen to Tony Rice albums from California autumn to Manzanita to river suite for two guitars, the more i’m telling me that Tony Rice was a virtuoso , his awesomeness on every aspects on playing guitar is just perfect, since i discovered him it’s a delight to watch these videos of him and discovering his albums
It makes me smile when people ask me who my favorite guitarist is and I say "Mmm well Tony Rice" and they are like who??? The record this is from "Backwaters" by Tony and friends is SO VERY KILLER all the way through!!! I love this man, his incredible tone, I sleep to his music, puts me into such a great place.
Mark and Wyatt were with Tony for many years as accomplished musicians. One mandolin player,Ray Legere who also played fiddle and acoustic guitar, who replaced Jimmy Gaudreau for a short period was awesome and a shame he didn't get to play longer with Tony because of his talent. Ray Legere did a project for CBC ( Halifax,Canada ) back then with Wyatt and Mark Schatz,he has hosted several Bluegrass/Acadian programs with an exciting band but has remained in Canada as a traditional bluegrass icon.
This is one MY favorites that he does. He doesn't play it much anymore. Last time I saw him do it was in 05. Still takes me back when I hear it though.
Tony said in one of his instructional videos that he had been fascinated with John Coltrane since the 60's. Now I understand why. I sure hope Trane can hear this, wherever he is out there. He would be proud, and also amazed. This is just too cool!
Love this ! Got to hear him play 3 time back in the early '90s, twice with the Tony Rice Unit, and once with Tony fronting the Seldom Scene. Mind blowing every time !
Hmmm. Two of my top 5 favorite guitar players were fascinated with Coltrane in the early 60's. John McLaughlin and Tony Rice. It's obvious Tony loves Jazz. You can hear it in alot of his work.
@a46474647 Anyone has the ability to become as good of a musician as Tony Rice if they put the effort in and practice. You will not be able to play like Tony RIce however, you will only be able to play like yourself.

I think Tony deserves a place in the Jazz Hall of Fame.
The GOAT. Jazz, bluegrass - simply the greatest in my lifetime to ever pick up an acoustic guitar.

Tony Rice was known for his Iconic Genre of "Blue-grazz" which is basically Bluegrass combined with Jazz.

Clapton is a klutz by comparison.
Be humble, learn from the masters - as Tony learned from John Carlini and many others - and then develop your own style. That's all there is to it.
