This game almost never happened, but from what we got its looking like a great fighting game! Whether you like MLP or not, which it is inspired by, the roster has a unique cast of characters
To be perfectly fair, you took that bit where you asked about doing Salt mines from a day where the community was doing "The Magic Series", which is our online tournament circuit. we only do that once a month, though. you'll probably find more people that want to salt mines on saturdays that aren't the last saturday of the month!
I followed this game when i was still in the Brony fandom. I'm glad they manage to get through this ever since Fighting is Magic (OG Them's Fighting Herds) got C&D.
Interesting. I've heard of the existence of bronies a few years back, which was quite a surprise for me. I still couldn't quite comprehend how a grown man could be into MLP. (No offense) It was interesting, to say the least. I even checked out a few episodes of MLP just to see what's up. It wasn't for me. I like the cutesy artstyle but that's just about it. From what I heard, the brony fandom has dwindled significantly, almost to a point where they are like an endangered species. You won't find a brony these days unless you actively look for them which is a stark contrast during the old times where you'll find a brony out and about and in your face.
It was actually going to be, as a side tournament. EVO is cancelled now, but I'm sure the TFH community is going to plan out an online tournament to replace the physical one that was going to happen.
@@NCozy Depends on the game, really, but if you're expecting a small indie game to make MAIN STAGE LINEUP at the money-hungry juggernaut that is EVO, you're going to be disappointed, sadly. They had a much bigger showing at the much more awesome Combo Breaker, and were going to do so again, but sadly, COVID screwed that one up too.
Slow it down, and there is a lot of small details easily missed in gameplay. For example, in Pom's heavy attacks, it looks like she's swinging her dog... But in actuality she trying to stop the dog from attacking.
Correct. It was hit with a C&D by Hasbro, which led to the developers receiving support from cartoonist Lauren Faust and Z-Engine creators Lab Zero Games to eventually make TFH.
I love the small roster, because it’s motivation to play other characters In other fighting games, you get 20+ characters and a casual player only plays 2-3 of them because that’s what they are comfortable with. In TFH, you’re motivated to play the others because they have the same basic combos, but are unique and different, but you’re pushed out of you comfort zone because the area outside of it isn’t much bigger that the area inside of it. That being said, I will most likely play nothing but Oleander.
Smaller the roster smaller the chances you get to know diff characters. i mean i usually play with magic characters, i never play the strongest or bulky ones. if i have 6 characters and there's only 1 magician, for example i would use only that one or maybe another 2nd option. The same applies to the other categories. where is motivational to use the other ones?!?! i would totally get a game with more options to expore-
No other fandom has been as productive and impactful as the MLP fandom. No other fandom has been lasting so long after the source show has been run into the dirt for year after year. If I ever find another fandom like this (and I don't expect that I will), then I'll keep an eye out to see what they do with their writing staff.
it kinda killed Nappy on the inside that he had some of the ideas for what he wanted in this game, and then because they've been in development for so long, other games started having ideas like their's. namely, Guilty Gear Xrd has a very similar tutorial to what they had envisioned their tutorial to be like.
I actually think AAA developers are capable of doing great things. It's just that they have to follow by strict release window and executives want safe, proven gameplay. Keep in mind this game took 8 years to be completed, and it shows in gameplay depth. But if they were attached to some major publisher no way they were going to let development go on for 8 years. Edit: for development taking 8 years, before 2015, it seems like they weren't on full development cycle. But still 5+ years for 6 character 2d fighting game is more than enough time to make game polished and ready. Something AAA developers never get.
Considering all the hard work, hard times and crap the team had to go through to finally finish this game.. CONGRATULATIONS "Mane6", music mixers, voice actors and everyone!! And thanks so much Mrs. Lauren Faust for you're help!~

Great to finally see this game out of early access! I like how you can still see the old personalities of these characters present from their Fighting is Magic days.
It's interesting that they only have 1 more character planned considering their original MLP game they were developing actually had quite a number of extra characters besides the Mane 6. Max and the Doods played it when it first launched in Early Access and actually loved the heck out of it. I'm really hoping they play it again, though perhaps maybe wait until the Level 3 Supers get added to the game, so we can get a Rate the Super too.
As for DLC, I would love to see a zebra, a giraffe, an elephant, a rhino, a moose, a bison, and 2 herbivores I would especially love but is not going to happen but a triceratops and a brachiasaurus.
I really hope that now that TFH is out of EA it will get more attention. It really is an amazing fighting game. Great music, great visuals, and the characters just ooze charm.
Two reasons for that: It's made using the Skullgirls engine (Z-Engine from Lab Zero) and the characters were designed by Lauren Faust, former designer & producer for the MLP:FIM cartoon (though it actually has nothing to do with MLP).
Not really. Skullgirls is a 6-button fighter, and this is a 4-button fighter. Just because they use the same engine, doesn't mean they play the same way.
When I saw this in the Evo 20 trailer i taught they were joking bt watching the trailer a 2nd time the animation and mechanics are amazing. Truly Gorgeous!!!
Man... what a crazy roller coaster this has all been. I was so crazy ecstatic for this dev team getting their game to come back after the 2013 DEBACLE, only for the dream to die literally days before the EVO tournament for reasons that were completely out of their control. I'm still thankful the game got the rub from people learning about it from the EVO Online trailer. it literally gave the game the injection it needed to sustain it's player base for far longer. Here's hoping Grand Stampede can even do half the numbers that EVO would have allowed Them's Fightin' Herds to do.
It's been nearly feature complete for years already. This update was basically the story mode and lvl 3 supers. Online versus and the roguelite lobby system have been finished for a while.
For over 20 years, Street Fighter 2 has been the tightest fighting game in my mind that no others have been able to surpass after. I'd never have believed a game like this would be the one to do it, but it does. If it just had a few more characters it would completely smash the competition honestly.
@@eliasnicolasmiranda4940 It felt too loose between the character types. Great review, but I really think it's a failing of reviews to keep presenting roster size as a negative against the game. Over time, we've become a lot more aware of the things in fighting games that turn out bad, and it's almost never the roster size.
You didn't mention the dynamic music system? Each stage has its own song and each character has there own style influences. Whoever is winning the song will change to there version of the song. Its really awsome and helps set the mood for the flow of battle going back and froth as the music chances sides as the fight continues.

The small roster isn't even a problem, I'm sure me and most fighting games players prefer small rosters with different characters than big rosters that are ultimately the same. Plus, even with rosters that have more than 15 characters, people usually play the same characters over and over in matches anyways
I'd say this is the first and may be only time I'm actually excited to play a game involving or inspired by mlp(whatever the case may be) despite also not being a hardcore fighting game player.

"Was", meaning you're not a brony anymore, correct?
@@holyattack9497 Yep
Interesting. I've heard of the existence of bronies a few years back, which was quite a surprise for me. I still couldn't quite comprehend how a grown man could be into MLP. (No offense)
It was interesting, to say the least.

This needs to be at EVO.
It was actually going to be, as a side tournament. EVO is cancelled now, but I'm sure the TFH community is going to plan out an online tournament to replace the physical one that was going to happen.

They had a much bigger showing at the much more awesome Combo Breaker, and were going to do so again, but sadly, COVID screwed that one up too.
Ngl the animation is really smooth and I do like some of the ideas this game has
Slow it down, and there is a lot of small details easily missed in gameplay.
For example, in Pom's heavy attacks, it looks like she's swinging her dog... But in actuality she trying to stop the dog from attacking.
This originally started as a MLP fan game, correct?
Yep
I recall seeing someone playing the MLP fighting game a long time ago after school one day
Correct. It was hit with a C&D by Hasbro, which led to the developers receiving support from cartoonist Lauren Faust and Z-Engine creators Lab Zero Games to eventually make TFH.
Yes. That's what they said in the video

I love the small roster, because it’s motivation to play other characters
In other fighting games, you get 20+ characters and a casual player only plays 2-3 of them because that’s what they are comfortable with. In TFH, you’re motivated to play the others because they have the same basic combos, but are unique and different, but you’re pushed out of you comfort zone because the area outside of it isn’t much bigger that the area inside of it. That being said, I will most likely play nothing but Oleander.
The small roster is because its origins. But then again with your profile pick you probably already knew that.
Oleander is my boo
Smaller the roster smaller the chances you get to know diff characters. i mean i usually play with magic characters, i never play the strongest or bulky ones. if i have 6 characters and there's only 1 magician, for example i would use only that one or maybe another 2nd option. The same applies to the other categories. where is motivational to use the other ones?!?! i would totally get a game with more options to expore-
Oleander is the best and cutest ungulate.
Our Brony fandom is a bit past it's prime, but damn! It was a fun 8 years for me.
This brings back memories.
No other fandom has been as productive and impactful as the MLP fandom. No other fandom has been lasting so long after the source show has been run into the dirt for year after year.
If I ever find another fandom like this (and I don't expect that I will), then I'll keep an eye out to see what they do with their writing staff.
Once again indie game developers show they have more understanding of game development then AAA developers.
it kinda killed Nappy on the inside that he had some of the ideas for what he wanted in this game, and then because they've been in development for so long, other games started having ideas like their's. namely, Guilty Gear Xrd has a very similar tutorial to what they had envisioned their tutorial to be like.
@@dirtiestharry6551 Time has very little to do with determining the quality of a game, especially if your talking about fighting games

Great to finally see this game out of early access! I like how you can still see the old personalities of these characters present from their Fighting is Magic days.
It's interesting that they only have 1 more character planned considering their original MLP game they were developing actually had quite a number of extra characters besides the Mane 6. I would like to see a Trixie equivalent in this game because she seemed to play amazingly from the build I played back in the day (When I could figure out the spaghetti code combos they had back then)
Essentially if/how many characters are added after GOAT depend on how successful the game is.
They weren't planning any more. The extras you've seen were all added by fans.

For over 20 years, Street Fighter 2 has been the tightest fighting game in my mind that no others have been able to surpass after. Nice work Mane 6!
I mean..
Even in a game with 75 Characters you'll get to a point where you see the same 6 characters over and over.
Yeah. I play Tekken, one of the biggest character lists out there. And I pretty much see the same characters every day. Some characters meanwhile I've not even seen once, after hundreds of matches played. Seems having a big roster is basically a whole lot of waste.
I am so happy that this turned out well. Not only that, but this game also seems to have a lot of tournament potential as well.
