  • This video explains How to Calculate the Hydrotest pressure of Vessels and Piping systems as per ASME & PED. A hydrostatic test is a way in which all pressure-containing components such as vessels, pipe lines, boilers and fuel tanks can be tested for strength and leaks. The test involves filling the vessel or pipe system with a liquid, usually water, and pressurization of the vessel to the specified test pressure for visual leak detection.
These formulas can be used for all pressure-containing components such as vessels, pipe lines, pipe spools, filters, separators, pre-filters, boilers and fuel tanks, etc.,
Explained about Hydrotest pressure Calculation as per ASME Sec VIII.

how long should the tank maintain the test pressure?

For your example the result it may be correct. However PED should also check for: 1.25*P*(S.T/S), as the larger of the values should be used. Additionally you are not allowed to exceed the conditons of PED ANNEX-I,7.1.2 for general membrane stress which I have not checked for this case.

Hi tom, thanks for your comment. We will review and come back.

For PED test pressure calculation, the slide wrongly shows the formula as Test pressure = 1.43 * Test pressure (this shall be design pressure instead)

Video shows that Test pressure = 1.43 x P, where P is design pressure which is correct only.

for asme in the test pressure calculation formula, you substituted mawp with design pressure , which is wrong! mawp is a calculated value and not the same as design pressure!

Pound square inch gauge. Imperial units in terms of gauge pressure and not absolute.

PSI is Lbs / Sq.Inch - ASME standard is American so they use PSI, g is gauge so it is the gauge pressure rather than absolute. 14.5 psig = 1 barg
