Iniesta missed a lot of the crucial moments of that season due to an injury 09-10. The only reason he was in the conversation is for scoring in the WC final. Sneijder was great of course but nowhere near Messi's level on an individual basis. There's a reason he finished 4th. Here's a stat from that season: Sneijder took 3.2 shots per game and scored 4 goals. Ronaldo took 7.3 shots per game and scored 26 goals. Messi took 4.7 shots per game and scored 34 goals.

Yes he did, and it doesn't matter if Haaland was statistically better than everyone else, that's not how these awards are judged (or at least they shouldn't be). Here's an example - go back to 2009/10 - Lampard, great player in his own right, scored 27 goals and had 20+ assists for us, helped us to a domestic double. Iniesta had 1 goal and won the World Cup for Spain. Who was more deserving of the Ballon d'Or between those two? Would anyone hand on heart say goal scoring machine Lampard was a better footballer than Iniesta? Or does it only work when it suits peopls agenda's? Haaland got the Gerd Muller trophy, that's what he deserved.
Iniesta scored more than one goal that season and did not get the Ballon d'Or even though he deserved it. Messi should not have won it this year, and there are a few previous seasons where him and CR7 did not deserve it but won it on reputation.

@@chichim2020 They were separate discussion - I was playing devils advocate by asking whether Iniesta would have been more deserving than Lampard in 2010, despite quite clearly having inferior statistics. This is exactly what the current argument for Haaland boils down to against Messi. Goals are clearly important, but they do not define great player.
Messi was brilliant for PSG in the league, he was their creative hub and Mbappe's numbers were still high despite their horrific management going on within that Club. It was just the Champions League where they fell apart, that's not on one player, Verratti and Donmarumma ultimately cost them there. If the Ballon d'Or were awarded on previous years format then Haaland would have had a bigger case and could feel hard done by, this award took in the whole season into account though, including a rare winter World Cup.

Ballon d'or is a contest of impact on a game. Messi has proven himself to be a high-impact player. Sure, he doesn't score every game, but he has plenty of assists and creates plenty of chances to make up for it. There's a big difference between the world's best goal scorer and the world's best player overall. I can see this going both ways, but I think what hurt Haaland was the fact that he's very quiet when it comes to the later rounds of the knock out stages, especially against Inter Milan. Whereas Messi is consistently the man of the match over 90% of the time, even when his team loses. I don't think people appreciate how impressive that is. Consistency is the difference between them for now. But all the best to Haaland in the future.

Answer this, which is better a treble or a WC?
I'm sure if Haaland would pick the WC, more so a majority of footballers would. People down play the WC, if Haaland's and Messi's roles were reversed I'm sure Haaland would prefer the WC, no doubt. Here's one better if it were possible, gather all the footballers in the world and ask, which would you rather to win, a Ballon d'Or or a WC? You bet the majority would pick the WC. Hence, Haaland deserved it, but Messi deserved it a bit more. I've made my point if every one would prefer the WC, then the Ballon d'Or winner is Messi, not to mention his stats in the WC give him a huge boost, I think him getting the golden ball played just as much of a part as the actual title when deciding the Ballon d'Or winner.
So, Messi didn't win the B D'Or only because of the WC but because of the WC and what he did in the WC (Argentina on a whole). If your looking at it in this way. But that doesn't mean you should forget what he did for PSG as well.
People think because it say Haaland 50+Goals in 50+ games means he scored in every game, and when you think of it Haaland had his goals from high scoring matches, not that I'm downplaying him, but Messi made an impact in more games and that's why he has more MOTM. Look at it this way Messi made more contributions in more games but Haaland had more contributions in a game. Here something to think about who was more exciting when playing [all matches played in].
The Ballon d'Or is for the entire season, and Messi had a more impactful role on his team, in terms of matches.Haaland has 3 trophies so does Messi, farmers leagues or not they did deserve to win those titles because they played to win. PSG is not at fault that the other teams cant get big investors.
Haaland broke alot of records yes but so did Messi, and more so Messi's records are more diverse. Haaland broke those records because of one thing his goals Messi broke his records based on all his different qualities he displayed during his performances goals etc, and you all need to realize that he did these while at 35 (retiring age with practically noobs not all ofc) while Haaland is still in his prime, early 20s while also a fricking tank, playing for arguable the best team in Europe, with WC top value players. The Balon Dor has a massive anti-Premier League agenda, which Mourinho pointed out, where they will find any excuse to give the award to anyone outside the Premier League because they are jealous of its success and popularity and want to use the award to promote other leagues. The Balon d’Or is a joke and has been for quite some time.
It is amazing to see people, in real time, crafting “THE story” of how Messi singlehandedly took a “little and unknown” ARGENTINA to World Cup victory. This is all massive overcompensation for Argentina’s failures in the World Cup in the previous 4 editions, where it was not just Messi failing, but an entire team of top top professionals that chronically underperformed at one of the biggest events in sports and being made to go home, disappointingly, at the quarterfinal round (excepting 2014). Please remember that Argentina were ranked 3rd in the FIFA rankings going into the World Cup and one of the only reasons they were not considered a favorite, universally, by everyone, is due to their consistent inability to get it over the line in previous editions.
Argentina played Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Poland, Australia, Netherlands, and Croatia to get to the final…this is not really the stuff of legends. There is even an argument to be made that Mbappe had a better individual performance than Messi in the final itself, I mean he was the only man to find the back of the net 4 times(if you include his penalty in the game deciding shootout).
Y’all want to give Messi the trophy, fine; but please get up off your knees and stop trying to convince the rest of us to get down on ours. -Haaland had 4 other pure Man city players in the top 10 bALON DOR list. Same case in 2019 with Van Dijk..when you have more teammates in the top 5 or top 10..it divides your overall votes. Rodri, KDB, and Haaland are already dividing opinions ON who's City's best player.
Combine these factors and remember the 62 vs 63 individual stats and add Messi's magic that dont get captured in stats...this was probably the easiest Balon DOR win for Messi among his last 3..

The thing about this season, is that the World Cup happened in the middle of the season. Meaning that in my opinion, if they did well, they should be better when they comeback from the break. Messi wasn’t entirely good in the second half, and the team nearly lost the league to lens and got knocked out in the r16 of ucl and French cup. Messi was not even psg’s best player or ligue uns best player. Messi only won the ballon dor because he’s popular and a generational favourite like Ronaldo. Ronaldo played 16 matches and got 9 g/a because of his injury. But when he won the World Cup with Brazil, he got the ballon dor instead of ballack who did as good as him.
