    You can hear the commentator screaming “the band is out on the field!” Because the other teams supporters thought the game was over. A classic clip! I’m sure there is a full video about that moment online.

      Known as " the play" you should do full video on it. Most entertaining, weirdest ending to any football game...ever. Cal vs Stanford the play.

      In addition to the band being on the field, at the beginning of the play at the other end of the field, the players did a series of lateral passes to keep the play alive.

    • @Karthos1000
      @Karthos1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IIRC, Stanford has in its records a different outcome, showing that they won, because one of the Bears was down before the lateral was made somewhere in that play, and replay (if they'd had it) would have shown that. But it goes into the books everywhere as a Bears win. Also IIRC, neither team had a win that season going into that game, so it didn't matter at all, except to the players and the fans. (Which is kinda the way football should be, don't you think?)

    That last clip of the man speaking is "You laugh, you think and you cry." Was a former college basketball coach and broadcaster Jim Valvano. He coached a team to the championship in 1983, in fact the play they won the game on is in your part 1 of this video (at 17:16 or that video) and you see him running around looking for a player to hug. They were massive underdogs in that game. But that speech he gave tragically came near the end of his life. He was receiving The Arthur Ashe Courage Award while battling cancer and he was so sick at the time he couldn't walk on or off stage without help. During the speech he announced the start of The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research which has raised over $170 million in 24 years. If you get the chance you should react to the entire speech it is amazing. And you should watch ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary on him and that 1983 team. The documentary is called "Survive and Advance"

My favorite part is when they apparently want to go to a commercial break and Jimmy, not even close to finishing, looks at the camera and says something to the effect of, "I got tumors all over my body and they're telling me 30 seconds." heh

    If you get a chance to watch the entire thing, try to watch the “I’m the Luckiest Man Alive” speech by Lou Gehrig. He was the man who brought ALS to the forefront and into public spotlight.
    Known as the Iron Man of baseball, he was amazingly talented and was a workhorse, never missing a start...until he got sick. He was forced to retire due to ALS and was dying when he made that speech.

    at the 15:06 mark: One of the absolute best moments of my life. I became a Cubs fan after moving to Chicago from Alaska as a kid. I endured half of that 108-year championship drought. How hard was that to do? Well, Luka, take a look at some of their fans' reactions to the Cubs winning the World Series. The emotional release is awe-inspiring and a wonderful gift for the fans that waited sooooo long for "lovable losers" to become hardcore contenders. Up until then it was ALWAYS, "Wait'll next year!" The part where there is a band on the field is called "The Play". Stanford Cardinals vs.. the California Bears have had a rivalry forever. Stanford had just made one of the best drives in history in a very short time to "win" the game but there was a few seconds left on the clock so they had to kick. The Bears transferred the ball 2-4 times just to get toward the Stanford end zone and the Stanford band had taken the field in contemplation of a win. Watch the whole thing, the best football game ever in my opionion.

    1:20 "The Play"
    College Football, 1982, Stanford University (White) vs their archrivals Cal Berkeley (blue) Stanford had just scored to take the lead extremely late in their annual game. They had to kick off to Cal and time expired. After a couple of laterals and near tackles, Cal finally got loose. Thinking the game was over, Stanford's extremely obnoxious and sophmoric band came into the field for the post game concert. The Cal runner ran through them for the winning score.
    Truly an iconic moment in the sport.

  • @corvus1374
    @corvus1374 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    1:30 is California and Stanford, California was losing and there was no time left on the clock when Stanford kicked off, and Cal players threw seven (I think) lateral passes. The Stanford Band thought the game was over, and they came out on the field to celebrate, but the play was still going on and Cal scored the winning touchdown with the band on the field.
    Many consider it the greatest play in college football history.

    6:34 the story behind this moment is amazing in football lore and history. The Giants, the team in blue, had a 24-3 lead going into half time against the Eagles, white. This game was massively important because it was week 15 of the 17 week football season and these two teams are division rivals, the winner of this game getting into the playoffs. Going into the last quarter of the game the Giants took a whopping 31-10 lead which is very very VERY difficult to come back from in a single quarter, touchdowns being worth 7 points if you make the extra point kick. Essientally the eagles had to score 3 touchdowns in under 12 minutes which again difficult in such a short amount of time. However the Eagles managed to come all the way back and tie it up at 31 which led to that punt. If you want to watch the full story for a future video or just for your own pleasure its called Miracle at the New Medowlands or just Miracle at the Medowlands 2

    If you haven't already, would love to see you react to Secretariat's Triple Crown wins. We have three major horse races in America that make up what we refer to as the Triple Crown, meaning one horse has won all three; the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, over a 6 week period. It's incredibly difficult to do with the races so close together. Many horses have won two of them, but only 13 horses in history have won all three. Secretariat was the greatest racehorse ever and set records at all three races in 1973 that still stand today. He had the crazy distinction of running each quarter mile faster than the previous quarter (should start fast and finish slower) and when he died they discovered his heart was more than two times the size of an average thoroughbred horse.

    The "oh, the band is out on the field!" is the final play of the 1982 "Big Game" between the University of California and Stanford University (another one of those bitter collegiate rivalries). It was future NFL quarterback legend John Elway's final college game, and he had just led a gutty do-or-die drive (including converting a fourth-and-seventeen deep in the Stanford end of the field) to what appeared to be the winning field goal with just four seconds left on the clock.
    On the ensuing kickoff, the Cal players in desperation tossed a series of laterals in traffic, and on one of them the pumped-up Stanford band thought that the player was down and the game was over, so they rushed out onto the field without realizing that the play was still alive. Result, one of the craziest finishes in football history, and a flattened trombonist.

    The horse race was Secretariat winning the Belmont Stakes (the 3rd of the races in the American 'Triple Crown') by 31 lengths in 1973. His time of 2:24 still stands as the American record for 1.5 miles on a dirt track.

    Glad to see the cardinals come back in the World Series made the list. I was 15 when that happened and it’s still the craziest moment in baseball history imo. Hometown guy makes up for an earlier error with 2 game winning scores on the teams last pitch. Unreal.

    5:20 The single most dominant horse, and horse race in history. And a record that will never be beaten. That is Secretariat winning the Triple Crown of American Horse Racing in 1973. He finished the last race, a distance of 1.5 miles, in a blistering 2 : 24 flat. Breaking the old record by more than 2 seconds. And winning with a lead of 31 lengths breaking the old lead of 25 lengths set in 1943. Truly amazing stuff.
    7:45 That play is referred to as the "Beast Quake". The man running the ball called what he did on the field going into "beast mode", giving us the Beast part of the name. The crowd was so loud and boisterous in their reaction to the play that the sound, and the fans jumping up and down actually registered on seismic monitoring equipment, hence the "Quake" part of the play's name.
    10:17 Yes that is Michael Phelps.
    14:24 "The Catch" That's the 1982 NFC Championship. A trip to Superbowl XVI on the line. Dallas had been a dominant team in the NFC during the 1970's and were favored to win. Bill Walsh coached Joe Montana at QB, DB Ronnie Lott was a rookie, and this play propelled them to the first Superbowl trip, ultimately winning that game too, in San Francisco 49ers history.
    15:02 Steve Bartman. That poor man made a mistake that cost the Cubs in the Playoffs. He received death threats, and security had to escort him out of the park that night, for his own safety because everyone else wanted to hurt him for his mistake. Even though he caught the ball, notice how many other fans had their hands out to try and catch it besides him. He was treated unfairly by the other fans. And after, or during, the Cubs winning the World Series in 2016, The team invited him to the park to wash away the bad karma, feelings, etc from this happening.
    16:07 Jimmy V. Coach Jim Valvano of the 1983 NCAA Mens National Champions in Basketball NS State. He is giving a speech accepting the Authur Ashe Courage award in 1993 2 month before dying from cancer. in 2007 an award named for him was first awarded. Go watch that full speech, then go watch Stuart Scott's Jimmy V Award speech.

    The play with the band on the field, so basically time had expired but the play was still going on cause the ball carrier never went down, and the Nebraska band ran onto the field to celebrate and little did they know Iowa was keeping the play alive until they ran it in for the touchdown. Probably one of the more wild interactions with fans in sports

    I'm sure someone mentioned this, but I'm not scrolling through comments. The clip at 3:51 is Ohio State Head Coach Woody Hayes punching Clemson nose guard Charlie Bauman in the throat after he intercepted an Ohio State pass with about two minutes left in the 1978 Gator Bowl. Even though the game was televised, the announcers did not witness what happened and didn't comment on the situation. Hayes was formally fired the next day. Clemson is 4-1 against OSU with wins in 1978, 2014, 2016, and 2019. OSU beat Clemsob in the College Football Playoff Semi-final Sugar Bowl (2021) and went on to lose the National Championship game to Alabama.

They still play that song today if you go to Rich Stadium (now New Era Field)

    5:21 And there we go. The greatest moment in horse racing history, from the greatest thoroughbred to ever live. 1973 Belmont Stakes, third race of the Triple Crown, and also the longest race of the Triple Crown at a full mile and a half. He got the lead on the back stretch, and just kept growing his lead. Where most horses would get a bit tired and ease off after coming around the final turn, Secretariat's lead just kept getting wider and wider. At the end, he won the race by an *insane* 31 lengths, and STILL holds the American record for a mile and half. No other horse has touched his 2:24 time in 46 years.
    After his death at 19 years old, they did an autopsy of him and found that this horse was a mutant of superhero proportions, as his heart was around 22lbs, over twice as large as an average horse's heart. The vet who did the necropsy said, "We just stood there in stunned silence. We couldn't believe it. The heart was perfect. There were no problems with it. It was just this huge engine." That and his extra long stride made him just the perfect horse for the kind of insane speeds he could get up to.
    So...yeah, big salute to Big Red.
