But he knows the companies don't give a shit about the rules at least till the DVLA catch them up then they blame the drivers . Like the company I work for DVLA came in now we all have to obey the rules and they have to keep proper records Perhaps it was the £25,000 they got that changed there minds. But it's a good video .Only one more year and retirement 37 years on the road
Another most direct and informative video, many thanks. What's often confusing is when shifts of 6-9 hrs or with other work add up to 12 hours spread over two working days. say an 1800 start, finishing at 0700 next morning. WTD break requirements adding up to an hour remain despite tachos often starting a new working day which can confuse? Is it best to ways keep seperate timings for WTD and tacho which of course, overlap to do both at once but when driving hours say no required break, WTD STILL, applies?
Hi Ro, Firstly 1800 to 700 would make it night shift and therefore restrict you to a 10 hour shift unless there is a Workplace agreement in place. Secondly if you were driving and during the course of your day you took 2 breaks this would cover your WTD obligations. As a general rule of thumb 👍🏻 you should be grabbing 15 minutes every 4 hours or so anyway. So is your shift regular? Are you driving? Be good to your self take 15 minutes every 4 hours anyway. If it all gets confusing and not much driving just make sure you take a 45 minute break at the 6 hour point and you will be covered. You can't work longer than 6 hours without a break and if you took it too early the second half of your shift would be too long. Day shift = 15 hours max Night shift = 10 hours max
Hi Ro, You can only work a maximum of 10 hours on a night shift without a work Place Agreement. Any time between 12 and 4am for trucks is night shift and between 1am and 5am for bus drivers
You can reduce your daily rest of a minimum 11 hours down to 9 hours 3 times in any one week. 9 hours plus 15 hours is 24 hours. Therefore you can do a 15 hour shift 3 times on any 1 week.
@@ADRTrainingIreland But what about the rule saying you can't drive for more than 9 hours except twice a week, where you can extend to 10 hours. As a driver would you really work 15 hours, 5 of which doing nothing?
@@ADRTrainingIreland ahh right i was just thinking driving, there's a lot to learn here with this time directive and working hours tach stuff. Overcomplicated more than it has to be.
Is it permissible to work/drive 3 hours take 15mins break then work/drive another 4 hours up until just before my driving time exceeds and take 30mins break? And that's all together an 11 hour shift.
So what about the 4.5 hours driving with 45 minute break rule? Why are there 2 rules? Which one are we supposed to follow? This is where it gets confusing!
You say you can’t work more than 6 hours without 15 minute break but the 15 hour shift part where you say you work 6 hours and take 45 minutes. You only work 7 hours 45 minutes that equals a finish time off 14 hours 45 minutes. I don’t get it
If you work 6 hours 15 minute break, If you work between 6 and 9 hours 30 minute break If you work 9 to 12 hours 45 minute bresk. These breaks may be split into 15 minute intervals, You can not work longer than 6 hours without a break. Look at my 6 hour rule simplified video again
Sorry for being the thick one, this is a mix of working and driving?? Because I thought you can only drive for 4.h hours and have to take at least 45 mins. Sorry I’m a NQD. Thanks
Here's a question Lets say it's a 9 hr shift (approx) at 5 hrs 59 min I take 15 min break, (Total shift is now 6 hr 14 min) after a :further 2 hr 30 min (on 8 hrs and 44 min) I take 15 min break. This now makes my shift 8 hrs and 59 minutes This not legal because the break was at the end of the shift so how much work (in minutes) needs to be shown after the second break ? Even if I take 1 extra minute my shift is 9 hours - which means I need to take another 15 minute break ... but I can't finish on a break so again how many minutes of work needs to be shown after the break to remain legal? Obviously this would be a poorly planned shift but I'm just interested in the legal answer cheers.
Hiya please tell me if I've missed something... ....the 1:49 example.. 9hr shift. Your saying 2 hrs work / 15 min break / 2hrs work / 15 min break but then 2.5hrs work is only a 7hour shift?
You could work 3 15 hour days and put anpther 4 hours of car driving to and from home so home for 6 hours this includes sleep eating and showering etc.???
So if i was to work for 12 hours in a day, i could work for 6 have my 15 mins, then i would need to have another 15 mins before i reach 9 hours? Also does having a 15 minute break reset the 6 hour rule, its still quite confusing tbh lol
Hi Leon, if you're about to complete 4.5 hrs driving time and 6 hrs working time at the same time and you're working a shuft linger than 6 hrs, can you take the 45 min tach break and the WTD break together within the 45 minutes - one 45 min break to cover everything?
Hi Leon ,very helpful video ,pls help me as IV not quite got it ....for instance if I was to work a 8.5 hour shift and had registered 15 min break this will be sufficient as it not hit the 9 hour mark ????.........many thanks
Why am I getting infringements when I have a 15 min break within 6 hours and another between 6 and 9 hours? The boss is saying I need to take 30 mins before a 6 hour shift.
Hi Fubar, If you are working more than 6 hours you may take your break at the 6 hour mark. You may not work more than 6 hours without a break. If you are working 9 hours then 30 minutes in total is fine. You may split it into 2 X 15 minutes or take 30 minutes at the 6 hour mark or 5hours and 45 minute mark as you will still not be working more than 6 hours on either side.
I've said all this to him I work over 9 hours so I was breaking it down in 15 min breaks.. but still was receiving infringements.. is this how the tachomaster has been programmed for drivers to take 30 mins before 6 hours? I'll share the vid and see if he subs 😆

Very clear explanation and looks very easy. Just I've got a question...How you can work 15h? Is it legal??? 5 x 15 = 75h a week....

Hi leon, so if im doing a 10hr shift all i need to have is 45min break in those 10 hours
Yes. You can not work longer than 6 hours in one go or drive longer than 4.5 hours in one go
Is it permissible to work/drive 3 hours take 15mins break then work/drive another 4 hours up until just before my driving time exceeds and take 30mins break?
And that's all together an 11 hour shift.
You can do a 15 hour day shift as long as you abide by the tacho and working time directive

Tachograph is all about your driving. Working Time Directive covers everything including driving from the minute you start until you click off
One more question. So we only need 45minutes for a 15h shift?
You say you can’t work more than 6 hours without 15 minute break but the 15 hour shift part where you say you work 6 hours and take 45 minutes. You only work 7 hours 45 minutes that equals a finish time off 14 hours 45 minutes. I don’t get it

Here's a question

after a :further 2 hr 30 min (on 8 hrs and 44 min) I take 15 min break. This now makes my shift 8 hrs and 59 minutes

That is a crap shift lol
Between 6 and 9 hours only requires 30 minutes break so 8 hours 59 minutes work 1 minute and you are legal

6 hours you only need a 15 minute break. If you go past 6 hours at all so between 6 and 9 hours you need a 30 minute break, or 2 X 15 minutes
Hi Leon.
The 15h shift in reality is 14:30h .
How come?
Not sure what you are saying? The end time will depend on your start time
You could work 3 15 hour days and put anpther 4 hours of car driving to and from home so home for 6 hours this includes sleep eating and showering etc.???
Your journey to work and back is not included in your working day
So if i start at 6am i need a break before 12 then can drive for another 2 hours or when my 4.5 hours is up
Yes if you start at 6 you need a 15.minute break before 12pm. Normal Tachograph rules apply
15 minute walk around 4.5 driving, 45 minute break. 4.5 driving, 2 hours working then go home
So if i was to work for 12 hours in a day, i could work for 6 have my 15 mins, then i would need to have another 15 mins before i reach 9 hours? Also does having a 15 minute break reset the 6 hour rule, its still quite confusing tbh lol
It's not Tachograpg you do not reset. 30 minutes if you work 6 hours 45 if you work 9 hours. Watch the video a few times.
5:00am|-|1°-|--11:00am--|2°|14:00-----17:00
| Before 6hrs| |Before 9hrs| |12hrs total
|15'(1°break) | 30'(2°break) |shift
Total 45' break

If you work 6 hours but less than 9 hours 15 minutes is correct. If you are driving you need to obey Tachograph times and rules
To ne more precise, If you work 6 hours 15 minutes.
Between 6 and 9 hours = 30 minutes.
More than 9 hours = 45 minutes
Do we only need 45 break for a 15 hour shift

How do we know which regulation breaks to take as after 4.5 hours uk regs state 45 minutes? Is this only for driving in Europe?
