Another absolute classic from the golden era of football! So many of my favourite players in this match, Dalglish, Souness and Ray Clemence to name just 3. It was brilliant watching football in 1979 and I remember watching England v Scotland 'live' every year in the late 70s/ early 80s. Thanks for giving us the chance to see this. Happy New Year!
I love those days when players didn't have their names on the back of the shirts, before it got more about shirt sales. Also it was a statement; "You've been picked to play number # for your country. It's not your shirt, it's the country's, you're just being granted the privilege to wear it for this game. Now go and prove you deserve that honour."
Keegan, Dalglish, Sounees, Wilkins,Neal, Brooking,Clemence,Jordan., Wark... many ,many great players in England and Scotland !!! Thanks for this game from Italy
@@duckjive1 thanks ! And happy 2022 to you : i hope for ALL !!!
I think man of the match was the legendary commentator, David Coleman. He was the perfect voice for England/Scotland matches.
This was Coleman's last ever live football commentary for the BBC. Wun nil.
My favourite commentator by miles 👍☺️🥅⚽
What a team that was to me Ron greenwood did well, big helped by crucial injuries to Keegan and brooking in82 World Cup , which we could have won
Yes, at their best England could have done it or at least taken third place.
44:45 - 45:10 Crunching contest for the ball between Barnes and Hagerty, both players on the floor, ouch!.... ball goes up the pitch then straight back down... yet both players are not just already up and back in the game, they're not even in that half! 😆 Love it!
That indirect free kick decision was an.....interesting decision, to say the very least.
The loss of Kevin Beattie in the late 1970s deprived England of a robust quick, powerful central defender in the air and on the ground, Phil Thompson was not really in the same league..though Dave Watson was a supreme presence..
Memories of great Liverpool and Ipswich teams in this era
LIKE FROM YOUR SUBSCRIBER. COUNTRY AZERBAIJAN BAKU CITY. SUPER CHANNEL. I WATCH EVERY YOUR VIDEOS. BRAVO.
I was all set to go to the game but caught measles on the Thursday. My old man conceded that it was probably not a good idea to take a 10 year old down to Wembley, in hindsight. Let’s just say, it was, apparently, an eventful weekend. Another great video. Recalling the game, 1979 was a terrible year for the Scottish team, played quite well at Wembley but our goalie, was terrible. Keegan’s goal was brilliant.
Some players in the Scottish team in those days!
Dalglish and Warky class
No England fans
20:14 That Scottish supporter led the police on a merry dance!
I remember this match clearly: Peter Barnes was rubbish in the first half and I said to my mother: "They should bring Barnes off...". A moment later he scored and I said, "Barnes is the best player on the park!". My mum, only half watching, laughed. Watch Emlyn Hughes celebrate!! Steve Coppell: deadly from two yards! Also, watch the dirty John Wark kick Keegan as he plays the one/two with Brooking as he goes through to score. Brilliant game, brilliant players and so good to beat the Jocks. AGAIN!!
Nice Scots surname you have
@@johnharkness2342 : It's actually Flemish.
@@glennfleming Fleming is a common surname in Scotland
Thank you KEVIN , was dalglish playing? 😂
Perms galore!
The indirect free kick certainly should have been a penalty. No idea what Souness was thinking, but it wasn't just "dangerous play," he made a full-on kung-fu kick that took the player out completely.
Joe Jordan clearly grabbed Phil Neal around the neck and threw him to the side during the build-up to the Scotland goal.
On the flipside, at 27:56, John Wark appears to be tripped by Mick Mills in the penalty area after he'd delivered the ball across goal.
George Wood apparently complained after the game that he thought Steve Coppell had fouled him for the second goal. 32:18 - I mean, seriously?
the hooray henrys have still got their Calcutta cup
@19:55 Love it!
Oops yet another win against jockystan.
With no fans to watch it
Coleman was so biased in his comments esp when Scotland were playing England.
Examples?
@stephenreeds3632 Aaaaaaaaaand... total silence after a month. Typical Scottish whingeing in my considerable experience. Always lots of vague generalisations about "English arrogance," and "English anti-Scottishness" (which is not only untrue, it's also very rich, given there's hardly ever been a Scotsman draw breath who wasn't Anglophobic - that's the real reason for the whingeing in the first place), but when you challenge them for examples.... silence. Or maybe something that on reflection isn't really an example of either. Because in the end, you're reacting to people for being English, not to what they're saying or doing.
Great upload, thanks for posting. I simply cannot recall the commentator's name.
@@duckjive1Yes, it is David Coleman. A Question of Sport.
@@damianmcdonagh7908 His last ever live game
Really enjoyed seeing Kevin scoring, I m absolutely outraged that Scottish fans? Were allowed to invade our sacred ground
When England was English
Great goal by Keegan, the 1-2 with Brooking. Very un-English.
For an International against Scotland at Wembley, why were there so few England supporters in the stands? Seriously, wtf?
It was often like that, especially by the 1970s. England fans never took the fixture remotely as seriously as the Scots did at the best of times, and by now they had grown bored with the Home Nations Championship; the World Cup and European Championships had become much more important to them, even if the England players took a different view (because many of their team-mates were Scots who wouldn't stop giving them sh*t all the next season if Scotland won).
The British Championship was by now increasingly viewed as an obsolete chore that got in the way of more pressing matters like trying to compete with Brazil, Italy or West Germany. The Scots were also getting a taste for other competitions, and although they still had a big appetite for games against England, they'd now stopped caring about games against Wales and Northern Ireland. This is why the competition came to an end within five years. The Rous Cup, with England, Scotland and a guest country from South America, kept this fixture going for a little longer, but even that only lasted another five years.
Annual fixtures of the UK teams were an anachronism by the 1970s, and England was the first to realise it.
@@martinodoni8943 "the World Cup and European Championships had become much more important to them"... even though England failed to qualify for any of them in '74, '76 and '78.
@@martinodoni8943It wasn't just international football where England's fans were outnumbered by the opposition in the 1970s (and into the 1980s); in cricket when England played the West Indies, the ground was full of Windies fans, especially at the Oval. And in Rugby Union, the Welsh fans used to outnumber the English for Five Nations - as was - matches at Twickenham.
They were frightened
I really appreciate your videos but I think you sometimes overdo the scrolling comments.
@@duckjive1 I mean that I think there are too many scrolling comments giving facts on players etc. They are distracting. One or two are fine. However, that is just my opinion and I should emphasise that I think that you are doing an amazing job. I couldn't begin to think how to access this material. Well done!

Burley for Scotland at Fullback? Hmmm.... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
Great full back at Ipswich and Scotland
Ron Greenwood kept picking Clemence thou Shilton was far superior.
Y
goodness knows why Stein picked george wood...
He was a solid keeper. Better than a lot of other Scottish goalkeepers.
@@sylvesterlennon8925 He was trying to find a replacement for Rough and let's face it there wasn't a lot of raw material around.
SCOTLAND could have won this if it had,nt been for another poor performance from a Scottish goalkeeper,I don,t think George wood ever played for Scotland again .
Back in the day the Home Championship was great. A pity hooliganism killed it off as well as bigger fish to fry.
