Back in the last century no one put insane amounts of money into entertainment the way they do now. You didn't have a large enough potential audience and there was very little special effects tech. Our culture now puts a big emphasis on entertainment, back in the day it was more of a special treat to go see a movie or sporting event. I think our economy being more service-oriented than manufacturing-oriented may play into that too. We've got a lot more leisure time now than our grandparents did.
