How long did it take you to learn ASL?

I learned some growing up and then I took classes in college. My college had a lot of deaf students and we all hung out together. Hanging out with other deaf and other signers made it easier to learn. It took a couple of years to become more proficient in conversation. At this point I’ve been signing most my life so I can’t exactly pinpoint when I became “fluent”. There is a great online program to learn sign for free. If you Google ASL University lesson 1 you’ll find it. The instructor is Bill Vicars. It’s a great way to learn conversational sign language. It helps to learn with someone else. Also look for meetups like “silent dinners”, “ASL club”, “sign language practice groups” etc. In my opinion I think everyone should learn, most of us will have hearing loss as seniors. I hope this message encourages you to learn sign. ❤🤟
