    Miles's relationship with his parents all comes from love. While Jeff is scared of losing Miles to the outside world, and Rio is scared that Miles might not be accepted for who he is. It tackles what a lot of parents worry about with their children. Did they do a good enough job raising them to where they can face the world on their own?
    They want to keep him close no matter what. In many ways, love from his parents, his community, and his love for Gwen keeps him going as Spider-Man. So, that love is being challenged. To focus on the conversation between Gwen and Miles's parents for a moment.
    Gwens's line, "He loves you more than you could ever imagine. I've seen it." It makes me wonder if she's also applying it to Mile's love for her. Since she now understands how much she means to him. Since she's showing that love for him by wearing the jacket.
    Side note: I think Rio would be a great mother figure for Gwen.
    Great video!

      @@Carlton17277 I'd also contend that in a way, Gwen is also trying to get the blessing from Miles parents to go after him. I feel that when she says "I've seen it.." there is almost the idea of her saying "trust me, I'll get him back". By Rio acknowledging this and speaking directly to Gwen, it's the final reinforcement that Gwen needs to go full speed into the multiverse for Miles, knowing that his mom is ok with her being in Miles life!

    Jeff Morales is fearful and he’s allowed the paranoia of his past with his brother Aaron to influence how he raises his son. Remember the conversation in the car where Miles tells his dad that he doesn’t feel like he has any choice over his future, and Jeff says “You don’t”.
    Jefferson loves his son and he’s determined to force him towards success…..his way. This plays into the overall reason why it’s hard for Jeff to relate to Miles, because Miles does not feel like his life choices are his own. They are his father’s demons coming to the surface, to do anything possible to prevent a possible repeat with his son.
    “Everyone keeps telling me how my story is gonna go…Nah, imma do my own thing”
    This applies to Jefferson as well. This isn’t a future that Miles is choosing for himself, but the path his parents are forcing him to take. While they love him, they don’t truly understand him. Which is why his relationship with Gwen is so strong, because she understands that part of him. The art, the desire to be respected and be mature.
    Fear is a big theme in the spider-verse trilogy. Jefferson didn’t face his demons and his past, but instead chose to run away from it. This causes him to neglect one of the most important relationships in his life, with his brother Aaron. He loses the relationship with his brother, and therefore an ability to positively impact him…all because of his cop mindset. Deep down Aaron was a good guy and just needed a push from his brother…in the right direction.
    Same thing that George Stacy realized. Gwen didn’t need a cop in her greatest time of need….”I need you to be my dad”. Aaron didn’t need the cop telling him his life was a mess, he needed his brother to help push him on the right path.
    This all connects together. Jefferson doesn’t understand Miles, because his fear is driving his ability to parent him. It’s the same mistake that neglected the relationship with his brother that could’ve saved him.
    He doesn’t understand why his son loves Gwen, until her speech. Miles has a duty and someone dear to him to protect, and Gwen acknowledges his growth. Rio and Jeff never realized all that about their son, because they were too busy trying to force him onto the correct path. Ultimately, Jefferson must choose to be Jefferson Morales, and not captain morales.

      @@Lunenoordegraaf707You're correct, but the film actually has him referred to as Officer Morales. The graffiti art has him listed as Jeff Morales too.
      Jeff's name has been a source of contention between fans for years, since his full name is technically Jefferson Davis.
      But I sincerely believe that someone at Marvel forgot that was a *terrible* name for a black character, so they had Jeff take Rio's name instead..
      Miles also takes her name too. (Or else it would be Miles Davis, which is a famous musician...)
      In short, that's why the film sidesteps all of that and just has him named Jeff Morales.

    I can definitely say regret and grief plays a major part in the story. Which makes Miguel's assault on Miles that much more vile even if he thinks is for the good of the Multiverse.

    • @unrulycrow6299
      @unrulycrow6299 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Rather than vile, I'd say it's sad because Miguel is having a breakdown at that point. He doesn't allow himself forgiveness from his own mistake and pushes it on everybody else as well. Behind the anger that's quick to burst throughout his scenes, there's a lot of unprocessed fear and grief, made even worse by the impression of not being in control of the situation anymore, because Miles stands his ground against him and openly challenges the one theory that holds the entire Spider Society together by the power of shared trauma - and by extension, holds Miguel together as well. This is why he goes from trying to stay calm and reasonable and sympathetic towards Miles to "let's imprison him because we can't take a risk" to "I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN MYSELF" so quickly. All the while not listening to Miles alerting about The Spot's very recent evolution and the danger that comes with it.

      @@unrulycrow6299I think both can be true. It can be sad because Miguel is so traumatized. But there is no denying that what he did and said was also vile and hateful, esp since he made Miles believe Peter and Gwen think of him the exact same way.
      Trauma is an explanation for abuse, but it's not a license to treat a 15 year old kid who just wants to save his dad's life with physical and verbal abuse like that.

    I don't doubt Miles was being sincere when he apologized for being late, but I wouldn't personally say Rio was reciprocating that in particular. Rio knows that Miles is still holding back, despite paying lip-service to the idea that he can be honest with her. I think she gives him that heart-to-heart because she recognizes that Miles doesn't trust that she truly is there for him, unconditionally, especially after what happened earlier between them, and as the parent in their relationship, realizes that it's her responsibility to take the first step toward creating that trust. That kind of parallels what George does for Gwen at the end of the film, too.

  • @Carlton17277
    @Carlton17277 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    Great breakdown.
    ITSV: Focuses on miles and family as the main plot. He always felt close to uncle Aaron as he was someone to talk to about his problems, personal and emotional side of things like mentioning gwen. His uncle wanted him to express miles creative side and be himself no matter what. Unfortunately, he had a side of him that miles didn’t know about it until he saw it which led to his death but him saying “I wanted u to look up to me” is a line that he wanted to make miles proud. Jeff wanted the best for miles and what really sparked miles to becoming his potential is that conversation with him because he sees a spark on him and he knows that miles can be great. His mother always wanted to support him and tell him to never run away from ur fears. I know Peter is not family but he is his mentor and like an uncle Spider-Man to him. He plays an important role for miles to understand what Spider-Man is and what they need to be by trying to figure it out by taking a leap of faith.
    ATSV: Miles relationship with his family is not a main plot but it does play an important role in the movie. I feel like with the loss of uncle Aaron he couldn’t talk to anyone emotionally and personally with miles saying “I miss my uncle, sometimes.” His parents do find it hard to understand or listen to him because they have no idea why he is missing five minutes for his teacher conference or leaving straight away by his parents telling him to focus and being confused why this is happening to him. I feel like the reason why they don’t understand is because they feel like miles has it all now by having a good family that loves and supports him, being in a top school and working hard to put him in this spot. But miles also thinks what’s best is to keep being Spider-Man a secret and to balance his life but I think his parents don’t understand one thing he is missing his friends which played a big part of his life in the first. That’s why when Rio saw Gwen with miles, she saw that he was happy with her and being open. And if u can slow the clip u will see miles and Gwen getting close like they were going to kiss before being interrupted. Rio also saw gwen put her hand around miles which I think she feels like that’s too close and doesn’t want her to take him away. Rio and miles conversation is important because it does foreshadow the movie but it also gives miles a purpose to being Spider-Man that no matter what he will always has family to guide him and support him if people don’t accept him or belong.
    Now I think there is one character that understands miles completely and maybe even more than uncle Aaron and that’s Gwen. I just realised this right now and why I think they are a perfect match Gwen said this about Peter “they really didn’t know me and I didn’t know him either” look at the parallel gwen didn’t know a side of Peter while miles didn’t know their was side of uncle Aaron. With Aaron and Peter wanting to be special in their lives. George wants what’s best for gwen and Jeff always thinks on what’s best for miles. Rio sees that miles is in love with Gwen by saying “I got some ideas” and I like that it zooms to her face straight away after she said those words because it shows her guilt and realising that how much she means to him and he means to her. That’s why based on after breaking her father’s canon event she said it’s all possible that u can do both, break canon events and mostly have an relationship with him.
    Btw this is such a small detail. In 15:36 hobie is giving a side look at Gwen after he said “that’s a bit of shame” which means that hobie knows now that miles does not have time/ready for her, due to his parents always wanting what’s best for him and also I think the reason why he looks at Gwen because he knows that she loves him and wants to spend time with him but his parents are strict of him and like I said wanting what’s best and that’s including not spending time with anybody including Gwen. Thats why Gwen is hearing this conversation because it will link to her conversation with his parents later on to tell them he loves them.

    • @jparry3
      @jparry3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm curious about what you mean by Hobie's side eye means that he thinks Miles isn't ready for Gwen just because his parents are more involved in his life...do you mind expanding on that?

    • @Carlton17277
      @Carlton17277 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jparry3 sure. So what u said is definitely from what he tells miles from his POV that his parents always wants what’s best for him and focus on his life without any distractions. When he did the side eye, he knows how Gwen feels about miles. Mostly, he is also talking to Gwen and saying that “ that’s a shame because u have feelings for this kid but his parents always wants what’s best for him and u don’t have time to see him because his too busy with his own life”. Plus gwen also looked kinda down when miles and hobie was talking about his parents because she wishes that she could see him more often and knows she didn’t do a good first impression in front of his parents. In summary, hobie is talking to both Gwen and miles on how difficult to spend time with each other because of miles parents and busy life.
      But look it’s not his parents fault because it’s normal that they want their kid to make sure to succeed and do what’s best for him.

      @@Carlton17277 I appreciate the further analysis. When said in that way (not sure why the first one didn't click for me) I hadn't thought about that approach to that sequence before. Probably because it happens so fast. I went back and watched it several more times (even pausing frame by frame) and it does appear Gwens face goes through several emotions all at once in that brief side eye (sadness, longing, frustration).
      It would make sense for Hobie to try and put some subliminal messaging in there to Gwen since like you said, he damn well knows how she feels about him. Not like he hadn't already been poking the bear since he saw Miles was in Mumbattan. And it brings the whole watch already being tuned to 1610 for Gwen into even sharper clarity as well.

    Dude, I absolutely love the work you put in on this video and Gwen's. I love how she is more of a focus this movie. But, as a father, I'm really loving how accurately you were able to capture his parents point of view. One thing I really connect with them on is the feeling of not knowing how to best support your kids, especially when you're scared of the potential outcomes. It's so hard to strike that balance of being a support system but not over-do it by "helicopter parenting" but not backing off so much that they don't feel supported. They did an amazing job of animation, yet again, but one scene that sticks out to me is Rio's face when Miles reveals he's spider-man. I FEEL her feelings; her immense love for him, her fear for his safety, confusion from something so big, and trying to keep that fear at bay because she knew what was riding on her reaction. God, I love the storytelling in these movies. It feels so absolutely real yet still feels like a fun spider-man movie. These movies aren't "good for superhero movies" they're just damn good movies. There is so much passion and love behind it all; the animation, the storytelling, everything. I can't get enough of these deep dive videos. Good job buddy! Late to the party on this video; your Gwen video was amazing!!!
    I think the only part of this analysis that i can find disagreement on is that Gwen is "more mature and thus willing to accept hard truths" when it comes to the canon events and her father having to die. I think she actually proves (at least up until her reconciliation with her father) to be the more immature of the Gwen/Miles pair. She has emotionally cut herself off from people for years, has not had the best relationship with the one parent she has left, and is desperate to find belonging, along with her constant missing of Miles that we see in the opening. So I wouldn't say that she is more willing to accept harsh truths, she is just going along due to her fear of confrontation with her father and of possible arrest, let alone now the thought of witnessing her own canon event.
    Miles relationship with his parents on the other hand influences literally the entire film and several characters in it (Gwen in particular, but Peter B as well). Their love, conviction, and belief in who they are is instilled in Miles by Rio's talk with him and it leads Miles to demonstrate that conviction when he recognizes that Gwen and Peter are now part of a group that would willingly allow anyone to die. He cannot believe that anyone, let alone Gwen would so willingly go along with such an idea. Miles is unaware of how truly broken Gwen is on the inside and why she has been going along with it. Gwen has a moment of revelation as she sees Miles fight off the society and when she goes to his room later and hears that conversation, I agree that she begins to fully appreciate the true amount of love that Miles has for her, and thus reinforces her feelings for him. Like you said in your Gwen video, "Miles was underselling it at the clocktower".
    It also occurs to me, from another commenter that mentioned Gwen applying the "he loves you more than you could ever imagine" to Miles parents; I actually think that she is also conveying to them that she loves Miles more than they could imagine in the same breathe.

      Yeah, the clock tower scene and the one where she's in his room at the end are so up there for me (just in general), but also from an analysis standpoint. They're so rich in details that you could pick out and I'm a little disappointed I didn't more...
      Oh wow, I don't think it's ever been that clear to me in my own head - I felt something along those lines, but couldn't put it into words!

      @@EmberNexusYT I know you've mentioned that you'll be doing a Gwen/Miles relationship vid when more stuff starts coming out for BTSV. Looking forward to that, but also, here's some additional thoughts I've had:
      1) I'd love to know what Hobie told Gwen's dad when he dropped off the watch. Like, did George already know about that picture because he found it after Gwen left, or did Hobie tell him about it, and a little about Miles? I say this because when Gwen gets the watch she nods to her father and he nods back. To me that's both mutual understanding about her leaving again, but also his blessing to Gwen to go after what she wants/needs, and that's Miles....which parallels the blessing that she essentially gets from Rio not to long after. Now both parental sides have told her that they are with her in this journey for Miles and it emboldens Gwen to move forward!!!
      2) How does Gwen respond to both being the one doing the chasing, and also the one being pushed away in BTSV? Miles is not going to be open to her help, or even to listening to anything she had to say immediately, or even after she convinces him to come back from E-42. Gwen has been pushing people away for so long that it's habitual to her when she is with Miles in ATSV when he is chasing her. Now that the tables have flipped, how does she (the older girl btw) handle potential rejection and disassociation by the younger male protagonist?
      3) Moment of intimacy: The majority of fans know that some form of intimate/romantic moment has to happen between Gwen and Miles for the story to feel complete. Question is how is it folded in to the narrative so it doesn't feel cheesy/forced. My take: I'd like to see it as part of the other moment we all know is coming (the one on one between Gwen and Miles when Gwen tells him everything and about how she feels about him) when maybe Miles is still not happy with her, but Gwen doesn't let him pull away and instead takes her true "leap of faith" and kisses him, therefore taking what she wants most in her life and pissing on the idea of the canon stuff all at once.
      Sorry for the stupid long comment, but your stuff is so detailed I decided what the hell? 😂
      Looking forward to that BTSV vid!!

It does help me understand more of the choices and emotions of the scenes in the movies. @EmberNexus I wonder if it would be possible to analyse the same for spider man 2099 especially when one scene in across the spider verse he was nice to miles and the other he starts to become very offended by Miles's comment "Are you even sure you are spider man.".

      I'd love to! Will probably try get a Miguel video out by, I want to say, the end of August- but I'll just have to see if I end up doing that Gwen map art and how the scripting goes for a Miguel video. But yes, the plan currently is that those two both happen at some point soon.

    Loved the video, as well as the Gwen Stacy essay and just wanted to thank you for your effort, you have shown me so much I have missed in these movies and it makes me love them even more and it just goes to show how deep movies, which the most people think are intended for children are and how deep the characters and their relationships are and how good these 'Kids movies' can work with symbolism, art, colours and music and overall be profound, meaningful and great.

      @EmberNexusYT Thank you for your response and for the videos, can't wait for the next one. And what's great about the Spider-Verse movies and shows like The Spectacular Spider-Man is that people start realizing that 'Kids Movies/Shows' can be just as good (sometimes even better) as any other movie or show.

    YOOOOOOOO
    I LOVE THE VIDEO AND I AM EXTREMELY HONORED THAT YOU'VE INCLUDED MY EXPLANATION OF GWEN'S HAIR. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE MY THOUGHTS AND GOD BLESS YA, MATE.
    Also fun fact about my essay, I made while I was on a plane to Taiwan. Within the 1 1/2 hour flight, I was watching downloaded clips of ATSV and I came to this realization midflight. To pass the remaining time, I spent about 30 minutes making the whole thing, in fact I still have it in my notes.
    LASTLY, I CAN JUST IMAGINED THIS HAPPENING:
    RIGHT BEFORE GWEN IS GONNA FULLY OPEN HERSELF TO MILES, SHE'S GONNA DO A LITTLE GESTURE THAT SOLIDIFIES HER COMPLETE OPENNESS IN THAT MOMENT; SHE TUCKS HER HAIR BEHIND HER EAR. I KNOW THIS IS A STRETCH, BUT I MOST DEFINITELY WOULD LOVE TO SEE HER DO THIS EVEN IF ITS JUST FOR A SECOND.

    I’m sorry but I can’t stand people who think that they have an edge on being a parent; that they think they are doing it the right way and get all whiny and doubtful thinking that they may have been wrong the entire time. There is no such thing as “I’m a good parents”. There will always be something that is wrong.
    For example, when I was a teen, I was never really excited about turning into an adult. Why? Because people have problems as an adult or as a teen. No point of complaining about anything because there will always be problems.
    Or, me? I have cousins who Ali treat like my little brothers or sons and they are well behaved. They always behave but does that mean I trust them? No. Why? Because there are always things that are unexpected and usually there are people who you least expect to be guilty of something. I cant ignore that possibility just because someone is well behaved. As parents, always have a mindset that there is always something wrong and that you are not doing at least something; expect the unexpected.
