      They also try to work with what the people remember happening decades later. If you try to stick close to that, you end up with a series of very memorable moments that stuck in their minds, while the more uneventful stuff between those moments is pretty empty. You could pad it out more to make it seem more balanced, but at the end you got a very limited runtime for a story covering a whole year.

    Actually they did show Guarnere's arc. He was not sure about Winters as a commander at the beginning, but after their assault on the guns, Winters had passed the "commander test" in Guarnere's eyes. Guarnere was from South Philadelphia and was a tough SOB. No matter the rank, you had to earn his respect.

    • @Reapster04
      @Reapster04 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Not quiet. Wild Bill risked getting lined up along a wall and shot as a traitor when Winters was getting fucked by Sobel. He (and everyone) in the company loved and respected Winters from Toccoa. The tension here is Wild Bill was out for blood because of his brother and Winters called him on his shit and he resented that in the moment but long term, as a good NCO, he knew full well he was wrong.

      The friction between Guarneere and Winters was fabricated. In reality the ambush of the horse drawn artillery group of germans wasn't under a bridge, it was on a open road. LTCOL. Robert Cole of the 502nd PIR led it. He would later be awarded the CMH for his actions at Carentan. Guarneere had lost his weapon in the jump just as Winters had, and was unarmed during the ambush. He did gain a reputation as a killer though, and he was motivated by his brother's death.

    • @mikecarson9528
      @mikecarson9528 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. At the time of the incident, Winters wasn't even officially Guarnere's commanding officer.

    • @ctpLynae
      @ctpLynae 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rollomaughfling380 However, in this situation, Guarneere would/should have treated Winters as the CO, as it is hard to follow the command of someone who is absent, and at this point in time, Meehan has not been found, so can not lead. His respect for Lt. Winters aside, he blatantly disobeyed a direct order from a superior officer, for which he got little more than a slap on the wrist.

    "We're rooting for the British guy..." I'm pretty sure you're talking about Damian Lewis who plays Winters, but the main cast is filled with British actors. Doc Roe, John Martin, Joe Liebgott, and Floyd Talbert are just a few of the core group of soldiers played by British actors. Filming was done in England so it was a more convenient casting pool.

    • @Farbar1955
      @Farbar1955 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is required of foreign film companies who work in England that at least 50% of the cast and crew have to be English. Plus British actors do a great job of using an American accent, much better than the other way around, so it's usually not an issue. Damien Lewis has family in Conneticutt that he visited often and with watching American TV shows he got really good at the US accent although he had to work at getting the Pennsylvania accent down that the real Dick Winters had.

      For first time viewers, a fun exercise is to try and guess which real soldier being interviewed is being portrayed by who on the show. Who is Winters? Who is Malarkey? Etc. Then when they reveal the names at the end of episode 10 see if you were right. The actors did such a great job honoring the real men that by the last episode you've got a pretty good idea who is who.

    It only gets better, my friends. But seriously my favourite show. I've seen it so many times I can identify the characters in the background even if they don't have any lines that episode. Also just the sheer dedication that went into the show, the way the actors either contacted the veteran they were portraying or doing a ton of research and reaching out to family members to get the most accurate portrayal of that person, the two weeks of boot camp every actor did -as- the people they were portraying (no real names) being trained as they would have been for WW2, and just the real care everyone involved took to transport you into the lives of these people and their experiences.
    The Pacific was good too, but I feel like it focuses more on the war and the Pacific theatre itself rather than the bond between the men. It just didn't have the same magic for me. Though in saying that, I will never not cry real tears during the scene were Ack Ack dies.

The ambush wasn't just E company, it was actually led by LTCol Robert Cole of the 502nd PIR, who later was awarded the CMH. Both Winters and Guarnere lost their weapons in the Jump, so Guarnere wasn't armed until after. Winters found a captured M1 Guarand under the seat of the wagon. Also, While Speirs did order prisoners killed and killed some himself, it didn't happen as depicted. But Popeye Wynn did apologize to Winters for being shot. Winters qas amazed and proud of Wynn.

    That's how low they where dropped.

    I was thinking that one of the changes from when _Guarnere_ disobeyed orders and the end, is that while _Winters_ did outrank him at the start, he wasn't his commanding officer proper. And that's what _Guarnere_ confirmed that at the end. . .and then gave _Winters_ a nod. Perhaps that's something to consider.🤷🏼‍♂️
    While I much prefer _Band of Brothers_ over _The Pacific,_ I felt _The Pacific_ was an excellent (and necessary) follow-up. I also feel _BoB_ may even ease audiences into _The Pacific._

    Thing that always gets under my skin is the idea of being up there and being shot up before doing anything. As you said.. spend months training for a jump and imagine being shot down by sheer luck overhead and never getting the chance to even ATTEMPT to jump. No dying in the face of the enemy or last stand type courage and bravery moment, just a guy a couple miles away shooting blindly into the sky happens to hit your engine that bursts and burns you up in the fuselage. ...That's it.
    I guess it's the fantasy of war, that if you're going to go down, you'll do so swinging your empty gun taking a bunch of 'them' out with you...but that's fantasy.

    The beginning interviews carry this beyond the actors and just an excellent series - as they are the real men who lived through the events depicted. You aren't told their actual names til the end so you do not know who survives and who dies. One thing to keep in mind when referencing storylines and characters is that it's actually real life events and real life people. The men in the interviews at the beginning of each episode are these "characters". There's some artistic license but if you go too far outside what actually happened, it's not the tribute to the men who lived this like it was intended to be. So it wasn't really about believable character arcs/storylines...it's just what happened.

      Right. Guarnere didn't require a formal reprimand for the incident in question in this episode. Winters made his point when he yelled at him and didn't need to make it again. There was never another incident that happened, so there's no need to make one up for the purposes of character arc. You're right. That would be an absolute disservice to the real men.

Later Winters in his biography Beyond the Band of Brothers wrote, "My God, it's beautiful when you think of a guy who was so dedicated to his company that he apologized for getting hit. Now here was a soldier - hit by enemy fire in Normandy on D-Day, behind the German lines, and he is more upset that he had let his buddies down than he was concerned with his own injury. Popeye's actions spoke for all of us".

    In the scene where Malarkey runs across the field to get a Luger (which wasn't really a Luger)...spoiler alert....the real Marlarkey said that was pretty much how it happened except he didn't have to run half as far as the actor did. He also said it was one of the stupidest things he ever did.

    I would have liked you to discuss Lt. Spiers a bit. Did he really execute prisoners? Was it justified on the first day while they were still surrounded by enemy forces? Also, just like that German soldier from Washington, I'm sure there were some German soldiers who were born or raised in England before the war and returned to the Fatherland in the 1930s. It would have been a good post-episode discussion.

    If you watch the documentary about E company Winters actually retells the story about Popeye who gets shot in the ass. Apparently he said "I'm sorry, I goofed" or something like that but it did happen. Winters almost starts to cry when he tells the story. I think the documentary is on TH-cam if you want to see it. You should see it after you've finished the series though.

    I have to say I'm well and truly gutted that you're not including the interviews at the start of the episode. They're what matters most in my opinion. Also gutted at how short the edited-for-youtube reactions are ending up being. I know this show like the back of my hand, so I know exactly how much good meat is getting wasted on the cutting room floor.

    I know you said your comment about the Guarnere incident was nitpicky, but there's something that you need to bear in mind to help you from getting caught up in such things. This series is not just trying to be realistic. It is also considered one of the most historically accurate depictions of WWII ever made, if not the most historically accurate. Most of the surviving members of Easy Company were interviewed before filming. Most of the cast were able to interact with their real life counter parts. Much of the details and dialogue is pretty close to 100% accurate. For example:
    -The incident with Guarnere and how Winters responded happened almost exactly as depicted.
    -Malarkey running into the open field looking for a luger happened almost exactly as depicted.
    -Toye almost getting blown up by a grenade twice and his reaction is 100% accurate.
    -The commentary by some of the soldiers that you called joking around was pretty spot on to how it really went down.
    -Losing weapons in the drop was a common thing because of the force of the prop blast.
    Sometimes real life is stranger than fiction.

      "It is also considered one of the most historically accurate depictions of WWII ever made, if not the most historically accurate." No, it really isn't. Stephen E. Ambrose is a hack who is looked down on by other historians. The show is based on real events but don't get carried away.

    Remember these paratroopers are the first in history. People then never dreamed about jumping out of planes. It's like there was a legit book or school for paratroopers then. Every paratrooper has balls of steel back then. Paratroopers today are bad azz but...

    • @krashd
      @krashd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first paratroopers in history were the French who started to experiment with airborne troops in 1915, by the 1930's they had the Groupes d’Infanterie de l’Air, the first airborne regiments in the world. Though the first real use of airborne units wouldn't be until WW2 where Germany used them as part of their blitzkreig tactics to knock out enemy defences. Though the largest deployment in history is still to this day the early hours of D-Day.

    I think you’re trying to rewrite history/facts. You mentioned you would have liked to have another confrontation/learning moment for Guarniere re Lt. Winters (that ginger guy.) This series was based on the nonfiction book by Stephen Ambrose who got the facts from the people who were there and witnessed it all. So, sorry but I guess no one knew of things happening to match your wishes. I really don’t mean to be harsh; I realize that we’re all used to seeing films coming from the imagination of the screenwriter. But, mainly, this ain’t that.
    BTW, the ginger guy is Lt. Dick Winters. It’s worth knowing. For the assault on those guns at Brecourt Manor, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross; the US Army’s second highest honor, only one step below the Medal of Honor.
