This is how you end an episode. Without a stupid cliffhanger.

***** I know right! This scene is so true and so real. I too I have stopped in a middle of a busy street and just watched people like Nate did. This show perfected endings with beautiful music and a mysterious atmosphere.
Although I hate to criticise this show, season 4 was a bit odd sometimes. I never liked how Keith suddenly bumbed into Ellen DeGeneres and how much of a selfish prick Nate eventually became. I didn't like Brenda to begin with, but I liked Nate. Now that I think about it I really LOVE Brenda, and I admire how she kept up with the lying and selfish and cheating bastard Nate.

I love how his dad's sitting on a bench that says 'Accident?', gets on a bus 'A Good Night's Sleep', and leaves Nate standing in front of a 'No Loitering' sign.
    Great scene.

The Universe was an accident and nobodys truly loitering in their journeys, and the goal of it all is to rest together in heaven.

Looking back at the show, I find it both sad and amazing to realize that it's basically the story of a young man who returns home to Los Angeles to spend the last few years of his life with his family and loved ones.
    RIP Nate Fisher

It's that weird thing when someone dies, or after a breakup, when you see that person in others on the street, and the loneliness you feel right in the middle of a populated street....how life goes on, but you feel it should stop, if only for a day, in memorial

About halfway through the pilot, the reflective dream scene with Nathaniel hosing little Nate & David in the front yard caused me to realize how potentially beautiful this series could be. But, this final scene from the same first episode was beyond brilliant and set the tone for the entire series to come. It was and still is simply the best collective work ever created and put to film.

Peter Krause as Nate Fisher was one of the best things about this show. In several ways he became the center pole holding up the big tent. That's saying a lot, considering the great work from the other actors. Every one of them gave us something to love about them. (Well, maybe we can leave Brenda's family out of that.)

I'm so happy to see recent viewings and comments on this clip. Many comments interpret the people walking past Nate as "time passing him by." I have a different take on that: Nate, having experienced the death of a loved one, now feels more connected to every human being he encounters. What would otherwise feel like blank mutual stares as each person walks by - is now a true "seeing" because he knows that they know (or, like him, WILL know) we're all mortal. Pure existential empathy.

God, this just takes me to the floor.. It's so haunting and soulful. Could be my beautiful son who took his life looking wistfully over his shoulder as the bus pulls away. It's my past, the laughter and sorrows echoing scenes from life. I'm waiting and I hope he's waiting. Just so tasteful in it's creation. I love the signs on the benches and the cinematography captures the feeling of isolation, of everything in your world stopping while the rest of the world moves on. Thank you.

I may be a little nihilist, but imho this song + this scene means only one thing: we are all just visitors and we are all waiting for one thing, which is... death.

Everyone has those people that they miss so bad that it still hurts. This scene perfectly captured that fantasy we all have, to see them one more time. Nate is stunned, as we imagine we would be. Yet also sees that his dad is headed off on his own journey.... What an amazing scene, what an amazing show...

cmbuelow With all due respect, I believe this scene is more about regret. If you watched the series, Nate and Nathaniel never really spent much time together. Prior to Nate turning 18, Nathaniel was all about the business. Once Nate turned 18, he turned his back on the funeral business, his father, and went to Seattle. This scene is indicative of their lives. Nate might finally be mature enough to have a relationship with Nathaniel, but, unfortunately, metaphorically and physically, the bus is taking Nathaniel away from him. This lack of a relationship with Nathaniel has left a hole in his life. He is alientaed and feels like an outsider. Everyone who walks by him in this scene looks at him like he's some sort of alien. This might be the first time in Nate's life that he realizes what he's missed out on. You should see the scene just before this scene. Nate wakes from a dream wherein Nathaniel, Ruth, David and Nate are in front of Fisher and Sons. David and Nate are little boys playing. It's a beautiful day and all four are enjoying it. Nate wakes up with a smile. Nate learns about Nathaniel as the series progresses. If you liked this scene, then you should watch the episode "The Room." EXCELLENT!

Paul Strouse That is the way to disagree on the internet. With respect. Thank you. Having said that, you may be right. I see regret in his eyes (I've seen the whole series btw) but I also recognize that feeling of missing him, and the lonliness in a croud (it's the worst), and the faces....some sympathetic like 1st lady, other cold like the next man and the black woman...... He is looking for something in their faces....... sympathy ? Empathy !

@Elliotohyeah How's that? It's about Nate recovering from his emotional trauma, and moving on with his life. That's the meaning of the 'no loitering' sign, imo - let go of your pain, or life will pass you by, like the pedestrians he stares at.

@NorthernElumination I think Nate was drawing him back home to spend the time with the family he needed. To have the child that he was supposed to have and leave the world the way he was supposed to leave it.
