Anthony continues to earn respect by not just saying this was a great album like everyone online and actually going in depth on how it could’ve been better
"The cool thing about this album is that I can hear myself be a baby at something". When André said that in the GQ interview, it really blew my mind. Such a unique way to look at things. It imbued a new spirit for me in my own songwriting. Love this man's comfort in his own imperfections
Yes but I wonder how he's going to feel about it in 10 years if he continues playing. I can imagine it will be quite embarrasing for him to listen to, and for the world to be able to listen to it. But maybe this potential embarrassement will motivate him to make another record.

Well said and I even find myself flopping between the two opinions throughout the album. Sometimes feels like he's trying to hard then all of a sudden I'm like damn this is cool as hell
I mean that’s the same with every album. It’s just harder to rank for most of us because we haven’t listened to many albums of this genre. I’m sure people that have and are educated in flute could come to pretty consistent scores.
3000 mentioned in his interview that he basically picked up the instrument from track one, and as the album progresses you’re actively hearing him get better and better at it, and it seems like Anthony agrees with that sentiment. What a fuckin cool shift, a great artistic expression nobody expected him to make, and what’s even cooler is how so many people are supporting him for it. That’s rad.
I think this is completely inaccurate, but I understand how you drew that conclusion as the interview was a bit confusing on timelines. He spoke about hearing recordings of himself and seeing a baby learning a new thing - but I don't think any of that was included here. He's been spotted in the wild with his flute for quite a while now, and spoke about the unfolding journey of getting to the point of actually putting it into an album, which makes me think this was all recorded more recently. And of course, as per previous commenter, he explicitly states that the last track was the first one recorded. Big ups on the support though. My love for 3stacks only grows the more I hear him talk about his experience, and the way this release been generally received is definitely the version of the world I want to live in
As musician myself I find this disrespectful, He's using all his clout and reputation as a rapper to do something that wouldn't be afforded to others, I'm not trying to hear you learn how to play an instrument listening to an album, As an artist that is just truly disrespectful to the listener
@@DangleSanyoure delusional he earned all the fame himself not like he uses someone else to promote the record and people were begging for a record it is way more interesting to listen this record rather tham him doing another rap album
@@DangleSan I would find this point cogent and valid if we were talking about him playing the flute live for the very first time at a paid gig in a concert venue. I didn’t pay to listen to the album though, it’s free on youtube which he released himself. This is kind of the place to release art and music be it finished, unfinished, overly finished, jamming, improvising, whatever. The way you talk about clout makes me think you’re a musician with some spite and jealousy over his big name, and I really don’t think you should be. The fact a big name rapper can release a project like this is a terrific thing for all artists everywhere, as he’s actively showing you can release whatever your creative bone desires, not what your audience is pressuring you to release.

I tried, but ultimately that's what turned me off. No solid percussion. It feels like it's going nowhere and there's no payoff. I like a lot of crazy jazz--souljazz, avant garde, free form etc. but this was dull new age stuff that went nowhere.
The album isn’t for me. But I immensely respect Andre 3000 for it, if he wanted more money or fame, he could of just done a rap album, but he went where his passion was taking him and that’s commendable. Nothing but respect and I hope one day we get a lil rap ep or lp from him but if not that’s ok. I respect where he’s at.
It just wasn’t that great. But that only gives him more space to grow. Obviously if you’re more into this kind of music/jazz you will hear it’s not even remotely up to par with the good stuff. But that doesn’t matter, because all great things started humbly. All power to Andre 💪
It felt like a break from the Density of the world events going on, from lyrics, from a lot really. Just a space to act as fertile grounds for your imagination. It made me want to be curious about more without needing perfection. Child like innocence in the exploration
It's great Andre dropped an album after a decade....but can we get some flowers to artist like E40 who are 30 years plus in the game dropping their 27th project...maybe even a review needle?
Im a huge new age/ambient fan and while i am intrigued by some passages i cant help but think how I'd feel about the album if I heard it in passing by an unknown artist. I'd probably think "meh" and move on to be quite honest. It feels a bit amateurish at times. Other times it does sound pretty original. Overall I enjoyed it but think he could have reigned it in a bit and create a more focused record. Also Anthony he was referring to Alice Coltrane, not John. Alice was a spiritual music pioneer, the shoutout made sense to me, though she of course does have some serious jazz chops.
I 100% agree. I also like some ambient, some post rock type of music as well. But this felt very dry and amateurish, I played the first 3 songs but I honestly can't continue. To me it sounds like what a fan making fun of what Andre 3000's new album might sound like. At some point the flute sounds are so odd, it sounds like he's not taking it seriously? or if it is him taking it seriously, it's just not good
Love this comment. One of the more honest opinions I’ve seen. This album was not good. At all. People are too deep in fandom to simply say that. I love and respect who 3stacks is to Hip Hop. I’m also, like you, a consumer of new-age and experimental music…but I struggle not calling this album terrible
I liked the idea. The album felt like he let us in on a session that he was just spinning ideas with musicians trying to get a vibe going. Even the titles are like haikus that give you an idea on the energy he was trying to produce. Probably the most personal project he'll make in my opinion.
A 6 is fine for me. Some people overdo it with the scores cause it's 3K. Suddenly many are experts in flute music. It's not a bad album, but it's also no like the resurrection of instrumental music. It's 3K i get it, but no need to get all hysterical and be either too negative or too positive. Still a shame that we'll probably never get another rapping album of him. Sure he probably only could have lost after so many years, but still...
Dope! Rap is so ubiquitous now. This album makes a perfect stylistic choice for Andrè 3000. I've been digging into Raga's and long repetitive drones recently, so I can't wait to listen to this album.
Because I already rock with this style of music when I get ready to sleep or just want to calm my mind..I really do enjoy this album. I feel like I’m hitting a whole other level of peace, calm and zen when I put it on…like I’m at a rain forest submerging myself under a waterfall….
I’ll be honest when this album first got announced I was a bit annoyed. I’ve been listening to ambient music for as long as I can remember. I’ve played this genre around my friends/causal listener’s and they have definitely clowned me for it and had no interest in it. I knew once this album dropped, all those same non ambient listeners were going to come in and dick ride this album because it’s different and nothing like they heard before. Then all of a sudden start acting hipster and high art like their taste is better or more refined. Acting like this album is better than it is or gods gift to earth. I went into set the other day to host a fashion show at our local museum and I was playing hip hop in the Green Room. My co host, I’ve worked with before, immediately came in and was like we need to play the Andre 3000 album to get the chill vibes going. This ninja ain’t listen to ambient music the whole time I known him and now he acting like he a music snob now. Nothing against Andre but I just felt the reactions to this were going to be interesting and pretentious. So glad to have an even take.
It felt like an ambient album back from the times when I was real big into ambient, so I like that aspect of it. Oddly enough I feel like it also did still have the outkast sound as far as the melodies go. Interested to see what his next move is
I’ve probably listened to this 30 times now, admittedly it mostly ends up in the background and I just like subliminally absorb it.. I love it though, it just keeps me calm and feels cozy. This is how I want to feel in my home. He felt this and I think it’s amazing he took a chance and released this. It’s not a 10 for me but if someone gave it a 10 I would also understand that. It’s an 8 for me personally.
people seriously need to stop getting their version of reality from memes. this 432-hz stuff is nonsense if you know any actual facts about frequency. The music sounds nice, that's what's important, and if it's "healing" anyone or anything it's in a purely figurative way
Really dope album I love the Dissonance during the improv it gives it this really cool feel you can't really describe with words 8/10 I can see this getting better with age
Exactly what one would expect from a first attempt of creating ambient. A decent 5/10 in my book; as it's great that he's evolving and trying new things, but you can't really compare it to the greats of the genre.
Thats how i felt. Like a not groundbreaking excursion into jazzy ambient. I was satisfied and if he continues down this path musically i cant wait to hear what comes next now that the obligatory splash is made.
If it weren't andre 3000 no one one be talking about this album. Not saying its terrible, its just a novelty of a legendary artist but standalone as an album it's nothing special. I think a lot of people that hear this just haven't explored ambient music at all
I'm honestly glad to say I got to listen to an Andre 3k record before I died. It's something I've wanted since I was a child and honestly assumed I would never get.
Anthony, you really are heartless. The man spends 17 years trapped in a historical simulation of an alien civilization doomed by its sun going nova, and when he finally wakes up and decides to release the flute songs he learned to preserve the last remnants of their society, the best rating you can give it is a 6/10?
Unpopular opinion: this is only getting any type of praise because Andre 3000 made it. If someone like Drake made a damn flute album it would be clowned on 100% lol.
Facts. If you or I had made this album, everyone alive would've either dunked on it or ignored it entirely, because it straight up sucks, and the only reason anyone is even bothering to talk about it at all is because of what Andre's done in the past. That's not art appreciation, it's hero worship. This album is garbage.
If Drake took a couple decades off of releasing music he could put out whatever he wants and people would have to respect it. There's people like you clowning on this album at the top of every comment section anyways so your whole point falls flat
Furthermore, I think there’s MUCH better ambient music out there. When you’re a bit familiar with the genre, this album is really underwhelming. Kudos to Andre for trying something new-I really mean no disrespect!-but New Blue Sun doesn’t really compare favorably to what this genre has to offer.
I found it very interesting that Anthony thought that if Andre3000 would've taken more inspiration from Playboi Carti's "Whole Lotta Red" then the album would've received a higher score. I'm always pleasantly surprised when Anthony calls back to this iconic album and expresses how more artists should be taking inspiration from it. Another thing that caught me off guard was how he thought that Andre should've included Carti's "whatttttt" adlibs and filthy producer tags throughout the album. While it wasn't immediately clear to me, upon a re-listen to the album I totally agree with him. Another great review fantano!
I was in need for this music and it surprisingly came from Andre. It may not be ground shaking novelty and it may even be a cliche. Objectively it is not brilliant, however for me personally it hit 10, because it just touched me where I needed the most (no pun intended). Somewhere around my soul, spirit, wherever it is.
"Twenty years ago, Andre 3000 profoundly said while accepting a source award "the south got something to say". Two decades later his first solo project didn't say shit...
Yea the flute playing wasn't insane and if you're looking for ambient, or especially ambient jazz, there's alot better.. tbh though, very happy for the fact that this will be an introduction to ambient / ambient jazz for alot of people.. very brave to release this as well
Could you recommend me some jazzy/ambient flute music that sounds similar to this? I really like the sound of the flute that André uses. It sounds very woody and very natural and foresty.
I listen to a lot of stuff like this, and yeah, I think your rating was pretty spot on. It's an interesting album but rarely felt innovative. The new ageiness of it turned me off, but the best parts of it reminded me of the first Boards of Canada album.
I don't think it's the greatest thing but I do think it's cool as hell that he did it. It reminded me of the Lil Yachty psych album we got about a year ago in that way and I hope more artists take risks like this and see what sticks
Y’all gotta listen to his NPR interview, to have context in how this came to fruition. This album will take you on a journey, if you let yourself be open from preconceived expectations. It will make you feel a sense of stillness & peace that is hard to achieve listening to today’s music. I love that Andre let himself be a conduit to his instruments, exploring the breathe of his soul & creating timeless music. A true MF artist! This a strong 8/light 9 for me, & will be listening to this many more times, in my meditative sessions! ✌🏼
If this was an unkown college kid's album, no one would give a shit and would make fun of them for their hippy dippy shit. People are just invested in Andre 3000 as an artist. And that is fine. But people need to stop acting like this is some groundbreaking Miles Davis shit. It's a good new age conceptual output from an artist.
This ain't no new music from andre. This could have been done by any amateur nerd Who been playing flute for weeks and listening to hipster ambient trash
imo its a solid 8/10, but i went into it without expectation and was impressed, those who enjoy jazz, ambient, instrumental, video game music and at points r and b or soul spliced into some freeflowing tracks. its not trying to be what many are judging it as.
when i listened to it for the first time it felt sooo long and kinda boring, almost skipped it half way in. i don't listen to much ambient music, but now that i got a grasp of the whole album, i can enjoy it a bit more. as the album progresses, there are more interesting and exciting stuff going on, my personal favs are track 4 and the last one.
There's something about this album. It has a artistic conceptual vibe and also probably has to do with the "Andre" persona itself. As if he doesn't care about the artistic template that other people afiliated him with. He's just living... I guess.
apparently Big Boi keeps owls now, and I saw online, said with love, that 2023 is just the kind of year where Outkast go from rap stars to Zelda NPCs and yeah, can't argue with that

See you all in the next 20 years when André 3000 releases another album
It's gonna be a salsa album
it's gonna be a Medieval disco-blues album
i'm stoked for the theremin kawaii-metal album he's planning.
Love Andre's decisions to follow his heart and make this album. I enjoy some ambient/jazz fusion.. but this was not it for me unfortunately.
Fair enough
It just wasn’t that great. But that only gives him more space to grow. Obviously if you’re more into this kind of music/jazz you will hear it’s not even remotely up to par with the good stuff. But that doesn’t matter, because all great things started humbly. All power to Andre 💪
It felt like a break from the Density of the world events going on, from lyrics, from a lot really. Just a space to act as fertile grounds for your imagination. It made me want to be curious about more without needing perfection. Child like innocence in the exploration
I managed to watch the whole review without checking the score in the description. A master of self control if I do say so myself.
Cool to read some people who actually have listened to this type of music before (I haven't)
@@patman93any suggestions album wise for a blank slate like me?
@@TheodoreHowsedo you gave any album suggestions in the genre?
I liked the idea. The album felt like he let us in on a session that he was just spinning ideas with musicians trying to get a vibe going. Even the titles are like haikus that give you an idea on the energy he was trying to produce. Probably the most personal project he'll make in my opinion.
as a musician i'm deeply moved by the title of the 3rd track, the moment of truly hearing the sound of your instrument, oh yeah i know that feeling..
LOL no one is acting like they're suddenly experts in flute music. I haven't seen a single person do that.
Maybe all the hate this album is getting will inspire him to come back swinging with a rap album 😂
The album sounds like a score to a great film. I’d love to see these songs go with some visuals like a short film.
Third track sounds like it came from a samurai film, shit takes me right in
Props to actually listening to the album and critiquing on how it could be better.
seems like the bare minimum for a critic?
It's literally the point of a review
Fantano has been so lazy with these reviews lately so its nice to see him actually listening to the album❤😢
I can't tell if this comment is ironic or not
I’ll be honest when this album first got announced I was a bit annoyed.
Absolutely agree with you there. Exactly my thoughts. 😊🙌🏼
André said we didnt need a rap album, we need healing...so he basically dropped a flute album on 432hz...nice.
This is a quote from a new age spiritual person on Twitter
people seriously need to stop getting their version of reality from memes. this 432-hz stuff is nonsense if you know any actual facts about frequency. The music sounds nice, that's what's important, and if it's "healing" anyone or anything it's in a purely figurative way
Really dope album I love the Dissonance during the improv it gives it this really cool feel you can't really describe with words 8/10 I can see this getting better with age
Some of the flute performances sounded like he was practicing. I dunno bro maybe keep this record for stocking stuffers for family and friends
in the top 10 albums of the year for me tbh. i love long ambient journeys of any kind, and i loved replaying tracks from this and vibing
Living the 1080p quality video melon! You're looking mighty crispy 👌 Thankful for the upgrade 🙌
gotta be one of my fav rap albums this year for sure
The first track makes me feel like I am playing Zelda Breath of The Wild
If it weren't andre 3000 no one one be talking about this album. Not saying its terrible, its just a novelty of a legendary artist but standalone as an album it's nothing special. I think a lot of people that hear this just haven't explored ambient music at all
I'm honestly glad to say I got to listen to an Andre 3k record before I died. It's something I've wanted since I was a child and honestly assumed I would never get.
The love below?
As much as it is within André 3ks character to release a project like this, it is also within Melons character to give that same project a 6/10
Anthony clearly didn’t listen to this in his headphones while taking a nice November walk with a slight warm breeze at his back
I had no issue with the album tbh
He don’t owe nobody a rap album if he don’t won’t too
He artist at the end of the day he can do whatever he wants
Spelunking through magical caves is almost exactly what i was doing when i played this album, it was perfect for that
If this album was called ‘Kids See Flutes’ you would of gave it a 10/10.
would've* given*
also, shitty joke, thank you for your service
Stop commenting the same recycled shit this is not funny
You Won't Get What You Want (A Rap Album)
Anthony, you really are heartless. The man spends 17 years trapped in a historical simulation of an alien civilization doomed by its sun going nova, and when he finally wakes up and decides to release the flute songs he learned to preserve the last remnants of their society, the best rating you can give it is a 6/10?
Unpopular opinion: this is only getting any type of praise because Andre 3000 made it. If someone like Drake made a damn flute album it would be clowned on 100% lol.
This is a fair take
imagine if corey feldman dropped this exact album
I feel like just like his rap he will only get better and better at this new art his creating
Somewhere around my soul, spirit, wherever it is.
ayo what’s the pun
That it touched me somewhere intimately :P but if you say this is dumb, I agree with you. Unnecessary bracket.@@thevoteman
Thanks for rating this a 10 fantano! We know you love his flute playing
The Key and Peele skit is more accurate than ever
You would have given this album a 10 if Track 1 was called You Won't Get What You Want (A Rap Album)
can't wait to hear it with just your voice
Nice to see you here

"Twenty years ago, Andre 3000 profoundly said while accepting a source award "the south got something to say". Two decades later his first solo project didn't say shit...

But he did MrCrazyComic
If this album was made by Andre 6 he would give it a 3000/10
I enjoyed this project. Definitely a few shortcomings, but so amazed at the realization that this is 3K. Very dope
Listen, I really like the album but I am 99% sure, if anyone other than andre 3000 had made this, you would have given it a strong to decent 3
2:13 Currently playing Wind Waker with the album running in the background 😂😂😂😂😂
this was like a 1/10 for me. Tons of way more engaging music out there to listen to instead.
Still waiting for the Kenny G diss album in response to this.
Hope this album brings some more attention to Nate Mercereau's work because he's putting out nonstop great music.
Sundays
Happy the brother put something out with his name on it. His brand is a classic
@@hellothere6927Check out Cole Pulice. Also Stikling by Blue Lake has a bit more instrumentation than just woodwinds but has a similar vibe.
@@hellothere6927yes I would like to know more as well
@@hellothere6927 He ain't recommending shit cuz he don't really know nuffin'.
If you're after some weird woodwind action, you should maybe check out the work of ex-Gong member Didier Malherbe.
It’s cool that Andre is pushing himself. And would definitely be interested to hear what he goes next
If the album was called Kids See New Blue Suns, it would be a 10💀

On the first listen i was immediately in tibet in spirit, then i saw this review and it reminded me that andre 3000 is just a human.
I listen to a lot of stuff like this, and yeah, I think your rating was pretty spot on. It's an interesting album but rarely felt innovative. The new ageiness of it turned me off, but the best parts of it reminded me of the first Boards of Canada album.
Honestly if Dre wants to get into his pharoah Sanders spiritual jazz bag let him
You would have given this a 10 if it was Big Boi playing the bassoon
HA! 😆
Alice Coltrane, that’s who he referenced so that’s why it might be confusing.
I don't think it's the greatest thing but I do think it's cool as hell that he did it. It reminded me of the Lil Yachty psych album we got about a year ago in that way and I hope more artists take risks like this and see what sticks

Funny that you mention it, the old-school synths were one of my favourite parts of this album
"You have to do research to understand this boring ass album that you won't listen to for more than 10 minutes"
Nah we good. Shit is ass.
Love your comment it's meditative music I wish people would WAKE UP😢
If this was an unkown college kid's album, no one would give a shit and would make fun of them for their hippy dippy shit.
People are just invested in Andre 3000 as an artist. And that is fine. But people need to stop acting like this is some groundbreaking Miles Davis shit. It's a good new age conceptual output from an artist.
I’m just happy we got new music from Andre
This ain't no new music from andre. This could have been done by any amateur nerd Who been playing flute for weeks and listening to hipster ambient trash
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315nuh uh
@@bernabefernandeztouceda7315 So hateful 😂 The live instrumentation on this album could not just be done by any amateur imo
I respect him for staying true to himself and just doing whatever the fuck he wants
imo its a solid 8/10, but i went into it without expectation and was impressed, those who enjoy jazz, ambient, instrumental, video game music and at points r and b or soul spliced into some freeflowing tracks. its not trying to be what many are judging it as.
I didn't even know he was droppin! Lets goooo 3 stacks
How does no one like the first track? The first 2 minutes of that track put me in another world.
when i listened to it for the first time it felt sooo long and kinda boring, almost skipped it half way in. i don't listen to much ambient music, but now that i got a grasp of the whole album, i can enjoy it a bit more. as the album progresses, there are more interesting and exciting stuff going on, my personal favs are track 4 and the last one.
First song is amazing. I did a cover of it I loved it so much 😂
Baby’s first ambient record
There's something about this album. It has a artistic conceptual vibe and also probably has to do with the "Andre" persona itself. As if he doesn't care about the artistic template that other people afiliated him with. He's just living... I guess.
This will be sampled FOR SURE
Andre 3000 forever one of the greats, B.O.B. by OutKast still blows my mind.
3stacks just made his perfect album to sample from to use for his next album.
apparently Big Boi keeps owls now, and I saw online, said with love, that 2023 is just the kind of year where Outkast go from rap stars to Zelda NPCs and yeah, can't argue with that
Woah... Something changed in the camera setup. The fluidity has gone crazy high.
