Perhaps all paradises are destined to be lost. The only way to recapture it is to recreate it, in another form, another life.
The village is indeed changed. Or perhaps Witt is only now seeing what he did not see before, because he was still naive. Island life is not perfect or idyllic. The people who live there are not "noble savages" or "innocent natives" living in some untouched eden. They are people, as prone to sudden bouts of discord and violence as the next, and to paternalize them as such is nearly as bad as calling them cannibals. Witt sees this reality in the village men as they're engaged in a physical argument. Sees it the skulls weathering in the eaves of their huts, the skulls of enemies, whether taken in this war or another before it, it makes no matter. He sees it in child covered in small pox, a pox he and his friend may well have delivered simply by engaging with them. To Witt, this is a sobering epiphany, because he'd come to believe that if paradise existed anywhere or close to anywhere, it was here. And yet paradise, if it exists, is ephemeral, as much a product of the mind as of any physical order. If paradise cannot hold here, where can it hold?
