The Douglas DB-7/A-20 Havoc was the most-produced attack bomber during World War II. A total of 7,477 DB-7/A-20s were built. The Havoc was a mid-wing, twin-engine, three-place medium bomber that earned a reputation for getting its crews home, even when both crew and aircraft suffered crippling blows. It was called the "Boston" when it was built for England's Royal Air Force.
It entered production when, despite official neutrality in 1938, there was little doubt in the United States that the country should support its allies, Britain and France. The French saw the secret bomber project at the Douglas Santa Monica, Calif., facility and ordered the first 107 DB-7s. The French then ordered another 270 DB-7s. Before the fall of France in June 1940, half had been accepted, but many were still en route.
The United Kingdom took over 162 of the DB-7s intended for France as well as Belgium, which also had fallen. By the time the United States entered World War II at the end of 1941, British Havocs and Bostons had already performed well for most of the year against German targets in North Africa and Southern Europe. The U.S. Army Air Corps designated the plane the A-20 Havoc, and it served in every theater of the war.

yeah. My grandDad was a pilot of Douglas A20C on the East front of WW2 against Germany.

No. I have meant Germany-Russian front. MotherRussia had lots of Douglas A-20 delivered here by lend-lease but in USSR this type of planes was called B-3.
The thing almost the size of a B25, but with a single pilot. Wow!
Nearly as large but considerably faster by 40-50 MPH. The Havoc even served as a might fighter. Douglas engineer Ed Heinemann did a great job. His follow on, the A-26 was even greater, serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. My personal favorite, having worked on them in the Navy was the A-4 and 2 seat TA-4 Skyhawk, AKA "Scooter."

A20 vs Me110?
How did one bail out of the A20? The cockpit sits in front of the engines.
It wasn't easy, but the official drill was to feather the props and go for it.

swag ster Even after feathering the props. the pilot would have to crawl back and over to the wing then slide off. The bombardier is totally fucked. The only way for him to bail is a small hatch in the floor right behind his station. I still think this puts him in FRONT of the propellers. The airplane would have to be trimmed and the props feathered. This would take some time. Low level attacks would be white knuckle.

swag ster I am going to assume that you are someone who truly cares and tell you this story... I got the bail-out information from my friend's Father who flew A20's through the war. Mr. Hosier has been gone for 2 years now, but he was a wonderful gent in his later years. As an A-20 pilot on D Day he happened to be grounded for an ear problem. His crew of gunner and bomb-aimer were lost that day. It haunted him until the day he died in 2013.
