Star Wars Hasbro Retro collection wave one review - Toy Polloi

  • I finally got my hands on a full set of the six figures in Hasbro's Star Wars Retro collection. The six figures are Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Darth Vader and Stormtrooper.
But are they any good. The only way to find out is to open them up and see how they look in the flesh. I've seen a lot of review with people just looking at them in the packet. That's no fun. Lets free them from their plastic tombs.

I'm glad these have been made, its allowed me to put certain figures into dioramas that I have, I don't want to pay the ridiculous prices that they are being sold for, and they make me just as happy when I look over to my shelves and see them in my display.

Hi Dave, I just discovered you a couple of months ago but have watched every one of your videos. I have been using your repair techniques on all sorts of stuff. Repairing and restoring toys is really my thing. Loved this video and its companion. I am American but my mother, God rest her soul, was from Gloucestershire and I haven’t heard anyone really “give ‘em hell like that since she passed away. I agree with you entirely but I must admit that as I listened to give them “what for”, I was helpless with laughter. Made my day!

Well, I grew up hearing my mother speak like that and also I spent a good deal of time in England visiting relatives and actually went to school there for a year (uniform with blazer and cap ). All my life when watching British TV, especially comedies, I would be howling with laughter while most other yanks are saying “Whaaat?!? Anyway, I do enjoy that. It kind of is who I am too. Keep up the good work. It is always a treat when I see a new video come through. Also thank you for all the effort It is really appreciated.

The strange thing is fans have proved that you can recreate these figures almost flawlessly. Yet, a huge company like Hasbro fails to do so.

    • @jasonfuller2734

Fans aren't reproducing and then mass producing them in the thousands. Most make them by order and put a ton of time and effort into each one marking up the cost dramatically. These are mass produced quickly and in an effort to hit a certain price point. With that being said Hasbro could have still done a much better job with these and other items from the past.

Probably because they don’t want to hunt around for ages and then pay extraordinary amounts of cash on original moulds and then find artisans who can create from them.

Here where I am in the US, there's two Target stores within driving distance from me, and I've never seen these or the board game. Not once. Pretty sure the scalper vultures got to them unfortunately. Honestly the only one I'd go for is Tarkin as I've got originals, but I initially thought this was actually a good thing these were coming, especially so others can get them too. Now, not so much. Great, rounded-out and honest review, Dave.

I'm glad they made these, it allows me to re-live the good parts of my childhood. I wasn't about to pay asinine prices for the originals plus I still have some of my original Star Wars figures. If you look in the right places you can actually get these for a little over $10 a piece.

even as a kid, I remember thinking "the weapon doesn't hold on this figure=I just bought a rubbish figure, let's leave it in the drawer". So annoying. And not just a problem with Star Wars. Show me a Kelek from D&D holding his sticks proudly! :D ...I would have been much happier with a figure with closed fists with a hole in the middle, I wasn't looking for realism, I was looking for a hand that could face a battle!

Great video and review. I wonder if the weapons and capes on these new versions will upset the ridiculous market for original vintage weapons and capes. Sometimes as a collector of strictly vintage 78-85 SW toys I sometimes purchase toys on EBay. Many times, as you know, the original vintage weapons and/or capes cost more (often substantially more) than the figure it’s self. I have been known to purchase inferior figures just to get the original weapon and/or cape.

I'd assume that, for these, just like they did with the Classic Edition 4-Pack, that they made the molds for these from original figures, and not from original molds. This would explain the fact that they seem a little bit smaller, or lacking, all around.

The idea was to get more Troopers to have behind Vader and Train (from the board game) and display them with my Falcon. I never found anymore anywhere. So I have a Vader, 1 Storm Trooper and Train. LOL Side note, and you can hate me but I super glued the blaster to the Troopers hand. lol Sorry.

Pity that they didn't dual mold the Luke Skywalker legs instead of painting the top white. Probably just a case of doing it on very tight budget, thats also maybe why they didn't clean up (fix the details) on what I'd assume would be 3D scans of the original figures that they used to create the new molds. The weapons are probably as result of the same thing.

My Original Han Solo had trouble holding his blaster as well. I had to angle it in his hand so it wasn't quite straight and looked a bit awkward. Some of my original Stormtroopers also had problems I dealt with in the same way. I ended up not having them hold the blasters as I was afraid of losing them. I kept them all in a small bag that my Mother gave to the jumble sale without knowing I wanted to keep them! Kinda back fired on me there. But yes they look like they have changed the blaster hand slightly on the Stormtrooper so it's more like the left hand than the old right used to be. Hans blaster handle looks thicker as well.

To those calling these “cash grabs” I would cut Hasbro some slack on making these. They deserve to be called out for stupid stuff like artificial wear on the backer cards and putting a big red sticker on them. But Hasbro is first and foremost a business, and have been losing their ass on Star Wars because of Disney. Disney got a HUGE payday renewing the licensing toy rights to Hasbro, and still has given them unsellable rubbish characters and movies to sell toys from, and Disney has some control over what Hasbro is ALLOWED to make. Disney can say “70% of the toys have to be sequel trilogy, and you need to emphasis Holdo, Rey, and Rose because wahmen”.
Disney drove the final nails in the coffin of Toys R Us with uninteresting characters and toys focused on identity politics instead of making cool characters and movies that kids and collectors want to collect figures from.
Someday alien archeologists from another planet are going to think Rose Tico and Rey were 2 young fellas we worshipped as gods or ruled our planet at some point, when they excavate 400 million Rey and Rose figures from landfills around the world.

I’m in the US and I have yet to see these anywhere. Honestly I don’t really understand who these are for. If it’s nostalgia you want then it’s relatively easy to grab an original. If you’re getting them for your kids then they’d probably like the newer ones that look better with more articulation. Seems like hasbro is trying another collector cash grab. Can’t sell any of the new characters cuz no one cares about them so we’ll just make copies of the old ones. Then we don’t have to actually put thought into it. Here’s an idea how bout more cool play sets and vehicles. Maybe a Bespin or Hoth playset.

  • @lipranditoys
    @lipranditoys 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The loss of detail in the molds is due to 3d printing. When the prototypes come out of the printer, they have a rough surface (is the limited precision of the printer, the same concept of dots for a regular printer). The prototypes then have to be sanded in order to achieve a nice smooth surface. Of course all this didn't have to be done with the old manufacturing processes. Hopefully, soon better 3d printers will be affordable enough to be used for toys.

All I wanted was the Luke to fill a gap until I could get a vintage one, so I got him. It hit me afterwards that they didn't even charge me tax on it at checkout. I don't know if they ever did put the rest out, if they are still there in the black hole of "the back," or if employees or managers put them on ebay to get more money, which I suspect is happening with some of these quickly disappearing lots.

The inability to hold their weapons kills these for me. My daughter opened her collection and we were so excited to play together, but dealing with their weapons was a total buzz-kill.

    • @jedipoodoo
      @jedipoodoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

No, from what I've found out about them, they've been based off of scans of vintage figures. Because of that, the details like Dave mentioned are softer when compared to the original versions.

I'll admit I wanted these when I first heard about them, but then Hasbro made them so damn hard to get, now I have no interest in getting any of them.
    Never saw them at Target
Only a few times at the Record for $15 bucks
If they made all of the last 17 and Ewoks as repos, then I'd be interested in those

Paul B I happened across a complete set in ASDA UK but now way could I afford to fork out £60-I got two and when I returned the next day the rest were gone. If Hasbro has bothered to have adequate stock shipped I’d have bought the set over a couple of months. Though I guess they didn’t want to take the risk that overstock would warm shelves for the next year 🤷‍♂️

CONGRATS on finding at least some of them
Maybe if I see Darth Vader or Princess Leia again, maybe I'll buy those two, so I have at least those two in my collection
The two Vintage Kenner Princess Leia's I have are missing capes
Haven't found the time to print off the Princess Leia cape pattern and try my hand at making a few .
Of the originals, I'm only missing 7
Blue Snaggletooth, Amanaman, Han Solo in carbonite, Luke Skywalker in stormtrooper disguise, Death Star Gunner, A-wing pilot, and Yakface.

Regarding the figures not holding the weapons: It's not the figures; it's the weapons that are the problem. Vintage figures won't hold the Retro Collection weapons, either. The Retro Collection figures can and do hold vintage (and reproduction) weapons quire well.

These companies just need to realize, the good old days are gone. With all of the legal markings and words they need to include on the packaging these days...it just makes them look silly. And these aren't easy to get in the states either, haven't seen any of them yet around me. Plenty of those new ones in the little boxes though and they aren't selling at all

These will sell regardless of the packaging flaws. The original trilogy toys fly off the shelves. The new stuff is garbage.

If the absolute silliness on the backs of those cards, and that pamphlet, doesn't make a statement about the absolutely Byzantine bureaucracy we live in now, compared to the freedom we used to have, I don't know what does. lol My God, that is a lot of legal garbage for a lump of plastic shaped vaguely like Harrison Ford.
