  • From his early career following Nelson Mandela on the campaign trail to his stint as US Correspondent for The Guardian, Gary Younge has been one of the most thoughtful and compassionate voices on the UK left. Gary sits down with Ash to talk about his time in Soviet Russia, his problem with skiing and the 13 hours he spent getting drunk with Maya Angelou.
    You can buy Gary's book, "Another Day in the Death of America: A Chronicle of Ten Short Lives", here: www.hachettebo...

      @@paddymeboythis is so tiresome. The word's usage has changed, and in one sense it is completely inverted. That's how hyperbole and irony contribute to semantic shifts over time. This has happened to many words you now use without even realising they used to mean their opposite. Deal with it; it's in the fucking dictionary.

    What a wonderful counterpoint to the noise and emptiness of the confrontational interviews of much of the ego-driven mainstream. I'm a bit older than Gary and largely share his political position so I may be a touch biassed but trying to be objective I feel he has such thoughtfulness that translates into insights that are at once hard hitting and compassionate. He employs such a simple but effective device of turning the mirror back on people to help them understand a situation. The short discussion of the white diaspora illustrates this perfectly. The completely unconscious comfort of being surrounded by the familiar reflected back in Ash's example of white friends being in the minority was uncomfortable but ok and then the realisation of how living with that discomfort all your life must feel. Great interview, Ash.

    Gary is always top value; it's always so - I don't know exactly the word - like _soothing_ or _reassuring_ almost to hear him break down things. He combines this rare intellectual caution and conviction so effectively. Also, he's completely right about skiing.

      Skiing is such the pastime of the wealthy .
      I cant imagine what would happen if after two week holiday, instead of returning with peeling skin and some tall tales de Benidorm, I'd have rang my boss and told him I couldnt shimmy up that ladder and stack the roof out with slates because.... I have a broken collarbone /I am hobbling about on crutches with my leg in plaster/ My car is upside down in a ditch in Morzine so we're having a few beers while Yves sorts it out...OK?

    The other thing about 2019 that often gets forgotten, even by the Left, is that Labour still secured their highest vote share since 2005 (it might even be 2001, I can’t remember off hand). To talk of broad popularity, vote share is the most important measure. The seat count significantly skewers Labours performance.

    • @ChrisBrown-px1oy
      @ChrisBrown-px1oy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not just Labour's. The highest popular vote for a winning party ever and the only one to exceed 14 million delivered a mere 21-seat majority to the Conservatives in 1992.

    • @btd836
      @btd836 ปีที่แล้ว

      Broad popularity is important once in power. Seat count gains you power. This is an important distinction. KS has to walk this tightrope. Sadly some are busy cutting the rope from underneath him. I have yet to see a coherent explanation how a third general election campaign along the same proper socialist/broad popularity grounds will turn out differently this time? I just hope he tacks left once in power.

    • @RO-wn1dg
      @RO-wn1dg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@btd836seat count is largely out of the control of the party under FPTP though, with the exception of specifically targeted seats (which you could argue is under the party’s control, but even then it’s largely up to chance). And it was (in part) the poor seat targeting strategy that undermined the 2017/19 performances (acc to the so-called leaked dossier anyway)

    The 2019 election was all about Brexit , and Starmer firmly in the remainer camp , convinced Mr Corbyn , a life long euro sceptic , to sit on the fence on Brexit throughout the election campaign .

    • @btd836
      @btd836 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm not sure what you're trying to imply. If Starmer had kept his mouth shut are you suggesting people would have voted for Corbyn to get Brexit done rather than the Tory party? Most of the UK were against Brexit by 2019, yet Corbyn remained Eurosceptic. Labour's refusal to back remain baffled many people and was a major error IMO. I cant see how Remain supporting KS is to blame for this when it was JC pulling the party towards Brexit/Lexit.

    You can't take a break from being political, if your politics is your situation. I do have an unhealthy rage and I do feel politically traumatised from 2015 onwards. But I don't have a permanent address, I'm suffering from mental illness, I'm trying to work, to finish my studies as an adult, I'm constantly having to chase up admin, and bills and medical help because nothing works, I can't afford food... Then this is replicated all around me in the people I know and meet. It's easy to take a break when your job is politics. My politics is my life.

    I am focused on the Post Office Horizon Inquiry and campaigning on that . I have really helped there I am told, in small ways.
