  • My reaction to Aphelios is up! I went into this one completely blind knowing hardly anything about the Lunari/Solari or Aphelios/Alune. Got totally surprised when we heard the voicelines were actually come from Alune herself too. The weapons she gives Aphelios are super cool too. Hope you all enjoy! :).

Aphelios theme is one of my favorites cause like kindred it has 2 constants: The singer and the cello which would be Alune and Aphelios. It also has 5 major beat switches to mark the 5 weapons (not including the 1 fall where its just singer and cello).

It's not that some weapons are stronger or weaker in a vacuum; each of them is designed for a specific situation. For example, while Crescendum will obliterate someone in a 1v1, you don't want it in the lane because of its short range and weird attack speed. The sniper, on the other hand, is amazing for harassing in the lane, but it won't do you much good if someone gets in your face. Playing him properly is all about working with what you've got and anticipating what you're going to do with the next weapon you get. As a side note, yeah, themes with vocals are not very common, but Diana, the only other Lunari champion, also has them. She was even the first one, I believe.

    fun facts:
    1. Zoe, before she became the Aspect of Twilight.
Was part of the Lunari religion which makes her thousands of years old.
    2. The champion Leona represents the Aspect of The Sun and Diana represents the Aspect of The Moon.
    3. Aphelios' weapons are focused through Alune, without Alune, Aphelios wouldn't be able to summon his weapons.
Aphelios lore and TL;DR version below in case you didn't understand the quotes
Aphelios and his twin sister Alune (the spirit-like woman behind Aphelios in the splash art) were born during a "rare lunar convergence, when the physical moon was eclipsed by its reflection in the spirit realm" Aphelios and Alune were seen as children of destiny to what remains of the Lunari faith. Aphelios and Alune had gifts, Aphelios represented the physical moon and Alune represented the spiritual side of the moon. The Lunari faith were the complete opposite of the Solari faith, the Solari worshipped the sun and felt safe in the light, where the Lunari worshiped the moon and felt safe in the darkness, Aphelios and Alune took this to such a degree though that they felt that the only thing that could keep them safe in the world was the darkness.
The Solari hated the Lunari and wish to kill all of them since they are seen as heretics, the Lunari used to be the dominant religion of Mount Targon but those times were thousands of years ago, the dominant religion started to switch over to the sun slowly over time though and eventually became dominant so the Lunari were forced into hiding keeping their religion a secret so they're not eliminated. Aphelios trained hard to protect those of his faith and so the Lunari sent Aphelios on missions because he was getting more skilled by the day.
Alune however trained as a Seer but her duties had her leave the temple where the two were raised.
Without Alune, Aphelios found himself losing faith.
Aphelios decided to partake in a ceremony where the Lunari found their "orbits" or their path in life where they had to "journey into darkness", Aphelios eventually got to a pool and saw bloomin Noctum flowers underwater. Noctum flowers are said to be a poisonous plant but they could be made into a liquid and whoever drank from it is said to gain the
"night's power." Aphelios drank the liquid and felt
"intense pain that numbed him to everything else."
Meanwhile in the Marus Omegnum which was an ancient temple in the Spirit Realm started to come into the Physical Realm for the first time in centuries. The Marus Omegnum would only let one person who was gifted in magic go into the temple, this person would be Alune. Aphelios, asked to see his sister one last time before going into the ancient temple. As the Marus Omegnum started to come into the Physical Realm, the armies of the Solari had come to end the Lunari once and for all. Just as everything seemed as if it was over, Alune went into the heart of the temple and she connected to Aphelios with her magic, and she used her magic to make weapons to replace his broken blades. The battle ended shortly with the combined force of Aphelios and Alune the attacking Solari would never see the light of the sun they worshipped again.
Alune pushed the Marus Omegnum back into the Spirit Realm in case Solari tried attacking again.
Alune was now alone inside the Marus Omegnum but through the power of the Noctum flower's liquid she could talk to Aphelios and see the Physical
Realm through his eyes. With the power of Aphelios and Alune combined the two could protect more of their faith easily. The other Lunari might not understand their connection through the Physical and Spirit Realms but together Aphelios and Alune are the weapon they need.
    X
TL;DR: Aphelios and his sister Alune are born during a rare lunar convergence. Each of them represented one side of the moon, Spiritual and Physical. Solari want to kill Lunari. Aphelios drinks a liquid that helps him connect to the power of the night. Ancient temple comes back from the Spirit Realm and Alune is chosen because only one gifted in magic can go in once it reappears. Solari attack and Alune gets new powers that help her connect to Aphelios.
Solari all die and the two are now the greatest weapon of the Lunari.
Sorry if it seemed like this story wasn't told as well as the other ones, Aphelios' lore can be confusing to explain in a few parts but I put it as simple as I could. If you have any questions about things feel free to ask and I'II answer as best I can.

The thing what Alune is referencing is that pain is necesary to get in touch with ourselves because if you keep going without feeling pain or aknowledging the feeling itself then you will stay ignorant about your own shadows. Your own shadows are also the part of your psyche and without them you will not realize the total part of yourself and alas you won't be able to improve yourself as a person. Pain can also carry a bonding nature because by the existence of pain there is a need for something or someone. Pain is asking for a cure that can be a person but most importantly a connection that resolves it. It's actually something that makes both of them stronger together because one is always in physical pain while the other reflects on this with emotional pain. This pain that they feel through their seperation is what making them stronger and makes them realize their need for one another. So Alune's lines are making so much sense if you think about it in a psychological way.

Me @ start of video: "BEST THEME LETS GO"
Edit: Aphelios player here. He's a near constant presence in pro-play because the sheer amount of damage he can put out is absurd, when he's set up to do so safely. He's a hyper carry in the same category as Jinx, Varus, Kogmaw (champs that sit in the back and just pump out extreme amounts of DPS). The issue tho is that he's a conditional hyper carry who's specializes against short range comps because his biggest dmg comes from stacking a bunch of white-chakrams and criting ppl in melee range with 4x attack speed or something. He's comparatively very bad against long range poke because he's slow, and using his own long range tools takes much more skill and effort compared to just slapping people in the face.
He surprisingly not that difficult to 'play'. All backline marksmen have similar playstyles and needs of how to play them. He literally has 1 less button to press than other characters (no E). The difficulty comes from Aph being one of the only ones who needs significantly more foresight and planning to play well. As in the best Aphelios players are planning for a fight 2 minutes in advance by trying to empty out their gun rotation in the correct order to have the set up they want when a fight starts. Other characters don't really have to plan ahead like that, not to mention the paragraphs of text you need to read to understand what his abilities do. 'Playing' Aphelios is relatively simple. 'Playing him well' puts him at the high end of champ difficulty.
DAFUQ DID YOU SAY PEOPLE DIDN'T MENTION THIS THEME TO YOU? THE BEST THEME? Hold up now I need to go back and check each of your vids I left a comment on because I can't believe if no one else that I didn't.

Fun fact: One of Rioters said that Aphelios originally haved 24 weapons, each for 1 hour. For example gravitum would be at 1pm and severum could be at 5 pm. They changed plans and its good that its not in the game for balance.
    About weapons in game:
In game Korean/Chinese pro players (Korea/China are the best regions, rest of them like Europe/North America sucks)always have calibrum (range weapon) bcs many adcs outrange him and have any other weapon. Albo they always try to have Low ammo on current weapons to use ability and changed them (Every ability weapon takes 10 ammo of 50) so they can use in 2 second use 4 abilitys. Right now hes out of meta but in first split (first half of the year) he was 1 of 2 meta picks on adc. He was pick or ban with Jinx but after changes in mid season he didnt find his way.
    Another fan fact:
He was propably the most broken champ after release. So much that even he created the whole meme named "200 years". If u check this on youtube u will find many videos with that title and aphelios in video.

When you say "he's gotta have a downside" when looking at the champion spotlight, well... The downside is that he's pretty fcking INSANELY hard to play. He's not a champ you're just gonna pick up cuz you feel like it or you wanna try him out, if you pick him up you gotta be willing to straight up main him. On the contrary tho, if someone would be willing to invest time into him and Master him/main him, he's insanely good and can carry a whole match by himself😊

As another comment said, his most powerful combo is Red/White. The order is White R > Red Q > White Autos which is the fastest way to stack his Chakrams, which do the highest DPS with Life Steal.
However, a good Aphelios player will 'schedule' his gun combos depending on each situation, and different combos will be optimal at different times.

Some notes about Aphelios’ gameplay: instead of by name, most players refer to his guns by colour/colour combination!
The go to advice for playing against him is “Red/White Don’t Fight”, because the kiting/stacking/healing from Severum and the sheer DPS from Crescendum are almost impossible to contest
He was one of the champions that inspired a meme in the league community referred to as “200 years” where a dev said to a player that the collective 200 years of game design experienced shared by the team meant that they absolutely knew better than players in terms of balancing
Ever since then when a champion gets released Broken/Overloaded they’re referred to as “200 years” by the community, the specific combination of Aphelios using his Ultimate with Blue/Infernum/Flamethrower to oneshot entire teams with one button press is particularly iconic - someone made a great little music video showcasing some ridiculous 200 years stuff that i’ll try and track down
