I'm cool with this as long as this turtle has a proper basking area and tank. I know a few too many people would act as if their turtles were dogs while neglecting basic requirements. Heck, I my coworker just had a box turtle did after 15 years. I wasn't surprised, dude had no idea or interest in providing a proper basking lamp.
Sure, maybe if there's a sunny room with a normal window they could basking under natural sunlight from indoors, but unless they live outside in the yard, they need proper lighting.

I like the fact that it is a red eared slider, which is considered a “throw away” / “boring generic” turtle. This shows how much love is all around us, and how far kindness and attention can go.

It's considered exotic around here, since we've got our own native, Amazonic species - called "Tigre d'Água, or Water Tiger, in Portuguese, Green and Yellow, just like our National Flag.
I can guarantee it's anything but "boring".
Fella does everything that cutie in the vid
can do and quite a lot more.
Yet, I don't advise folks on getting one,
since it might be expensive or otherwise
hard to raise it well and appropriately.

How did you get the turtle comfortable with handling? It would be amazing if I could take my red eared slide out even just for tank cleanings because she will not tolerate being held for more than a minute. She also hates shell touching, my mom was taking her out and was touching the algae and she literally propelled herself out of the hand and back into the tank. Luckily she was not hurt but I just want to make her more comfortable with handling in general. She’s an adult, maybe a bit older and we got her a little more than a year ago. I have just learned to not waste time in getting her up and out into the temp tank.

I had a turtle like this, Slow Poke. I used to use a toothbrush to scratch her shell and clean it. She reacted just like this guy, she LOVED it! Slow Poke was the size of a 50-cent piece when the neighborhood kids gave her to me. She was a Western Painted Turtle. Slow Poke went from a 10-gallon to a 20-long, to a 55-gallon tank. She had everything in her turtle condo. I filled the tank up within three inches to the top as they love to dive and swim. She would create a small tsunami in the morning when she saw me get out of bed as she wanted her brine shrimp. I would let her out to roam about when I took the tank down and cleaned it. She would walk around, follow me, or the cats, and then bask in the sun with the cats. Slow Poke was like this fella, very human-oriented, never in her shell, and a turtle that was really a pet like a dog. When my friend came over with her dog, the dog would sit nose pressed to the tank, Slow Poke would see her, dive down and stick her nose to the glass to greet her furry friend. One day, after cleaning her tank, I put her back in after she wandered around. She was acting funny, so I kept a close eye on her, then she fell off her dock, into the water, and passed away. I was devastated because she was perfectly fine before I cleaned the tank as I had done for 14 years! I believe they can live up to 30 years, I even had a very loving home for her if I passed away before her. My grandchildren, my friends, and my neighbors all miss that sweet girl. So, I know how smart turtles are and how they can get attached to humans!

      @thesurvivorssanctuary6561 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Well, actually, there is a reason why that turtle cannot love his human like the human loves him; a difference in biology. Just, the attachment that turtle feels towards gis human is something vastly different then what people feel towards each other and animals; I think.
See, mammals experience deep feelings of love and companionship because of our maturation cycle. We drink our mother's milk, and she protects us; and then we are particularly social animals as well. Because we have to care for our young, and cannot abandon them like: turtles, frogs, and snakes, do, we have paternal and maternal instincts to care for things that are "cute".
Turtles don't have that. They never experience someone protecting them, except pre-birth. They are rather lonesome creatures who are not used to having anything care for them, so Mmy guess is that this turtle is either feeling a strange and ancient feeling of protection and comfort(like pre-birth), or he's decided that his dad is his mate(which is not as bad as it sounds, because it's more about the behavioral patterns; like deciding you want to spend the rest of your life with someone curled up on the couch).

Our black lab found and rescued two tiny red sliders in our yard in suburban Dallas, probably not long after they hatched. Two was all we could find of however many there were. We raised them up, took care of them, and eventually released them into a pond nearby, but the whole time, we never really thought of them as animals we could interact with, and who would interact with us.
There are definitely ways of interacting with creatures in the animal world that we are in general, only vaguely aware of, if at all. I was amazed watching this video, and felt bad we never thought of them as having any interests outside of their little turtle enclosure.

Aquatic turtles are incredibly difficult and expensive to care for properly! I really don't think they should be a beginner reptile plus they stink so bad! I really like turtles but they are a lot they also carry salmonella! I probably recommend something like a leopard gecko instead.

    • @night_falll
      @night_falll 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That’s cool, that you have so many reptiles around your land! Anyway, I don’t believe a turtle is right for you, if you are new to caring for reptiles. A leopard gecko would be best, as @I love fish said. If you want, here’s some information I found on them!
Leopard geckos are mostly nocturnal, ground-dwelling geckos that are generally docile and easy to tame. They do not have the sticky toe pads like other geckos, so they do not climb walls. But unlike other geckos, they do have eyelids.
Leopard geckos are not prone to biting and are usually slow-moving. They are known to be very vocal, especially when they are hungry, and they make chirps and squeaks.
When you first bring home your leopard gecko, you can socialize it by gently handling it. They will tolerate a certain amount of contact, but don't overdo it or your leopard gecko may become stressed. Geckos use their tails to communicate. If you have more than one leopard gecko in an enclosure, keep an eye out for tail-waving. It's a slow, back-and-forth motion. The gecko often raises it, too. This sign means a leopard gecko feels threatened and is about to attack, so separate them right away. He might even do this tail motion to YOU, which means you’re stressing him. A 20-gallon tank is large, but there should only be one male per habitat; a bigger tank is preferable. Only keep males and females together if you want to deal with breeding. Old fish tanks that don't hold water anymore also work perfectly well for leopard geckos.
Provide half logs as hiding and climbing space. Commercial reptile caves and simple cardboard boxes are also good options. A damp hide box can help with shedding.
Spot clean the cage once a day to remove feces. About twice a month, take everything out, throw out the substrate, and scrub and disinfect the cage and all the items in it to reduce the buildup of bacteria.
It's also important to soak your gecko in a shallow pan of lukewarm water for about 10 to fifteen minutes once to twice a week. This will help with hydration and humidity. You might need to complete this process more often if your gecko is shedding. You can use a regular white light incandescent heat bulb to provide a basking spot during the day. A red heat bulb, blue, or purple heat bulb, or ceramic heat emitter can provide supplemental heat at night.
Undertank heating pads work for heating, but they may not be the most effective for regulating your gecko's temperatures properly. If your gecko burrows down to the glass surface of the tank, an undertank heating pad might cause burns. Never use hot rocks.
As cold-blooded creatures, reptiles need to regulate their own body temperature. Reptiles like a range of temperature or thermal gradient, so they can adjust their body warmth. Provide a daytime basking spot of 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) with a thermal gradient down to about 75 Fahrenheit (around 24 Celsius). At night the temperature can drop to a range of 70 to 75 Fahrenheit (21 to 24 Celsius). Make sure your gecko is not exposed to any drafts, and do not place the tank next to a window or door. Being nocturnal, leopard geckos are most active at night and do not require a lot of UV lighting. In the wild, these creatures are also active at dawn and sunset and get UV exposure at those hours of scant sunlight. A small amount of UVA and UVB light (2 percent to 7 percent) can go a long way to keeping leopard geckos healthy and may reduce the risk of metabolic bone disease.1
Your lizard will need incandescent lighting and heat from that source to mimic the sunlight. In the summer, give them about 14 hours of "sun" per day. And, in winter, the lizard will need about 12 hours of that light. For ease of care, you can automate the cage lighting by putting the lights on a timer. These lizards are desert lizards, so they do not need a highly humid environment. If the humidity is too low (below 20 percent), the gecko might have trouble shedding. Keep the humidity level about 30 to 40 percent, which is similar to the humidity level in your home. You can use a regular screen top, coupled with the heat source, to keep the environment dry. To check on the humidity level, get a hygrometer or humidity gauge for the cage. Leopard geckos are insectivores. Feed a variety of crickets, waxworms, and, in moderation, mealworms. On occasion, you can try to feed a pinky mouse to an adult gecko. To make sure that your gecko does not ingest any substrate, you can feed your gecko in an empty tank.
Juveniles need to be fed several crickets every day. Adults can skip several days between feedings. Before you feed the insects to your pet, they must be gut-loaded or fed a nutritious meal 24 hours before feeding. You will also need to coat the insects with a calcium/vitamin D3 supplement before you feed them to your lizard. To do so, put the crickets or worms in a ziplock bag with some of the powder supplement. Shake the bag quickly and drop the insect into the tank with your lizard. Hatchlings and juveniles need the calcium/vitamin supplement at every feeding; adults only need it at every other feeding.
You can also provide your gecko with a lick dish of the vitamin.
Provide a shallow dish of fresh water for your leopard gecko at all times. The water bowl will help add some humidity to the enclosure, and your gecko will drink from the bowl. You may even find a gecko voluntarily soaking in its water bowl. One of the most severe conditions that can affect leopard geckos is metabolic bone disease. Just like humans, geckos become ill if they don't get enough calcium and vitamin D. Metabolic bone disease causes painful spine and limb deformities.1
If you notice your gecko developing armpit bubbles, these are not dangerous. They are a sign that your lizard is storing something. These bubbles can contain fat, vitamins, protein, calcium, or other minerals and are common in overweight geckos. Usually, these bubbles go away when the lizard returns to a healthy weight.
Leopard geckos also are prone to gastroenteritis, which comes from a bacterial infection. If your gecko has watery stools or its tail shrinks, these may be signs of gastroenteritis. This condition is potentially fatal but is treatable if caught early.
And like other lizards, leopard geckos that are undernourished or live in a cage with insufficient moisture may develop dysecdysis. This condition, which looks like dry skin, causes the gecko to have difficulty shedding and can affect its vision or constrict their fingers or toes.3
Finally, leopard geckos are susceptible to a variety of respiratory infections, including pneumonia.3 Wheezing or bubbles of mucus around its nasal passages and mouth are a sign that your leopard gecko is having respiratory problems.
All of these conditions should receive treatment from an exotics veterinarian who specializes in reptiles. Since they are long-lived lizards, be sure you're prepared to care for a leopard gecko for an extended time. These highly popular pets are readily available, but it's always best to purchase geckos from a reputable breeder which can cost $20 to $40. Rare morphs may cost up to $100. You might be able to find a good reptile breeder at a reptile expo or reptile show near you.
When choosing your pet, look at its tail. It should be plump and fat, preferably as wide or wider than the space between the gecko's shoulders. Its eyes, nose, and mouth should appear clear and not runny. It's vent, or opening for urinating and defecating, should look clean and not swollen. :)

Really think about it. Some breeds might outlive you. Iirc the longest recorded for this one (red eared slider) is 70yrs but you should expect about 40 at least. Sale and purchase are also banned in some places because they're highly invasive. Unfortunately, ppl abandon them after realizing how much upkeep they need.

Please don’t get a turtle just because they’re cute and you want one. Think about it long and hard. Look through different articles (I recommend “The Spruce Pets”). Turtles are extremely hard to take care of and require your full focus on them. They might even live longer than you!
