One of my and my late first husbands favourite shows, I recently re watched all the episodes of "Goodnight Sweetheart" it stands the test of time and is an excellent series if you are looking for something different to watch

I remember watching these when they went out the first time. I've since then bought the DVD Boxset and rewatched them and they are excellent.
I have to say I prefer the first few series before they changed the characters of Phoebe and Yvonne. Ron & Reg are superb throughout also.
If you're ever in East London pop by Ezra Street where it was filmed, the pub is still there and it kind of looks no different to when it was filmed.

I loved Goodnight Sweetheart (still do ) Ron ran an independent printers (leaflets/posters) which is why he could print the money, but money in 1940 was literally just white pieces of paper, not like modern money, would have been easy to forge with modern printing methods. Good podcast :-)

41:14 There's a good reason she looks like Emma Amos, the Yvonne actress. She's her real daughter.

The reason the casting for Yvonne and Gary's daughter is so perfect, is because she's the real daughter of Emma Amos/Yvonne.

Really, I watched it earlier thinking how much she looks just like Yvonne.

I just rewatched the entire series on britbox. Loved it as a kid in the 90’s.

I think the bigamy element was still shocking in the 90s. I remember always thinking this was dark even back then. But thats the point, he is meant to be morally ambiguous which is why it is different from other shows.

That Rolf cameo is awkward now given. There are a few references that are tbf!

I just watched a couple of minutes on TikTok. Which then made re watch the whole series on ITVX. Great show and should have done another series when it jumps from 1962 to 2016.

Remember the episode with Robert Maxwell where he gets his name from Maxwell house coffee and is a conman!!And the episode e where a future time traveller came through and nearly shut down the portal and the time he went back to Victorian London with singing Yvonne and Jack the ripper!!

Remember when Gary was struck by lightning while travelling back in time, and he split into evil Gary, wimpy Gary, and heroic (and slightly gay) Gary?

He didn't quit his job. He was sacked as he was done for drink driving in the 90s
I rewatched the 2016 episode Phoebe said that The Beatles stole Love Me Do and all the other songs he had stolen like in My Fair Lady
He got the shop as he didn't want to lose access to the passage as the area was redeveloped. It was a good cover for him and he had access to cheap stock

I loved Goodnight Sweetheart I can so see the romance of being in the 1940's it was a passionate and stylish era. Also society was all together and keep calm and carry on whereas in the 90's society and morals and norms were beginning to really fall apart.
He wasn't committing bigamy as when he married Phoebe in the 1940's his 90's wife wasn't born yet....Do you not get the premise of time travel and mores!!Gary is not annoyed his wife is getting a career just that they are in different paths now and have changed!!Who could not fall for Dervla Kirwan , Phoebe was a stronger person than Yvonne with real life and death problems and being cheery and carrying on .

My favourite episode was when Gary won a talent contest in the 1940's by performing the 1950's All The Way by Sinatra which was the perfect choice for the audience. The close second was when he played a Paul McCartney song Penny Lane in Liverpool and a guy said ''Mr Lennon over there has got a 4 year old who writes better songs than that.'' I had no moral problem with Gary's double life and think his rationale made perfect sense. I was born in 1942 so hearing the theme song was a bit misty eyeing. Cool presentation by you guys though. I thought Black Books finished too soon.

fun fact, in Birds of a Feather season 1, the theme tune was originally sung by William Atherton, who played Walter Peck in Ghostbusters.

The show is charming at times, but when rewatching this I noticed that 90s trend of the humour being overly sarcastic and sniping at each other constantly. Which is fine in small doses but weighs heavy after a while. Men Behaving Badly did it a lot too.

I can't believe you didn't go "DR WHO" - The greatest episode of the New Who "BLINK" with Sally SPARROW and it starts with her pulling off the Wall Paper and finding messages from the past!! - I watched this here in the US where BBC shows were played on Channel 13 (Public TV) on Thursdays and Sundays - We always tuned in for "Are you being Served" and "Red Dwarf" and then they tossed in random other shows like "Goodnight Sweetheart"

as for the dads army part as wondering if dads army was a tv show in the goodnight sweetheart universe, it was, as there was an episode where ron asked gary to invest in some stocks back in the 40's to try and gain in the 90's from the price of shares going up since then..and the bank manager was called mr mainwaring, ( mannering) his assistant was called mr wilson and the tea boy was pike...in the end pike became the manager and had allocated there shares to a company that went bump and they lost everything, ( bit of trivia, in the 90's the bank manager was Eamonn walker who played marigold in the tv series in sickness and in health with alf garnet).. so i think thats why they used Ian lavender (pike, stupid boy) as garys son michael

Nice to see you youngsters appreciating an old codger's work, but have you looked at your subtitles. They're hysterically awful.
