    Former AA-1B owner here. This clip is pretty spot on. You can keep it on the ramp to keep costs down if you have decent year round weather and good covers. A little faster than most production 2 seaters. Faster approach speeds too. Super responsive to control inputs. If one has the 150-160hp motor, I’d imagine you’d climb like no other 2 seater, but will have to make plenty of gas stops on your trips.

    It's worth mentioning that this airplane was designed by the late Jim Bede. The tubular spar and glued wing skins can still be found on his kitplanes (BD-4, BD-6, BD-17L)!

    I'll consider this a good sign! I just bought a Grumman AA1A last week (red, almost exactly like one of the illustrations). Sweet flying airplane, and it's kind of neat to say "Grumman" when calling the CTAF or tower. Thanks for another great walkaround video. I really look forward to these.

    I got my private ticket in a Cheetah. Great plane. You could pull the canopy open partially in flight and pretend to be a fighter pilot. Had to watch the nose wheel shimmy with that cantilevered setup up front and steering with differential braking takes a minute to get used to. But a great platform and fun to fly.

    • @garymiller5624
      @garymiller5624 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The nose wheel shimmy is easy to address with a fish scale and tighten the bellows washer to 15psi if I remember correctly. I suspect new washers can be procured as they do lose their tension over a period of adjustment.

    Bought my 1972 AA1A in 1977, flew it for about 1600 hrs until 1996 when I sold it. Of all the single-engine light aircraft it is the best flying aircraft in almost all ways - faster, ultra responsive to the controls, strong (there has never been an inflight structural failure of any AA1 or AA5) and has superb visiblity. The only downside is that it is a runner on takeoff at high elevations or density altitudes and when heavily loaded to max So what is to be done? Simple, put an 0-320 or 0-360 Lycoming up front, add extra tubular tanks in the wings to grab back the range and more! Now you have a little fighter-plane that climbs like a homesick angel, gets off the ground so easily and cruises at speeds only matched by allegedly faster aircraft! It transforms the aircraft in every way and the only reason American Aviation and Grumman-American did not build it this way is that they saw a ready made opportunity and targeted the training market which was a booming market in the 1970s with the GI Bill offering flight-training subsidies to vets!! So it had to have an economical motor and did not need range!

    The wings are interchangeable?!

    • @christalbert722
      @christalbert722 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      From what I've read- early versions, the wing was symmetrical and identical left to right- they were interchangeable. Same for the rudder and elevators- all 3 were identical and interchangeable. This was to reduce construction costs and speed up manufacture. The symmetrical wing gave a faster cruise speed but had harsher stall characteristics. On the later AA-1b models the wing used a different airfoil, no longer symmetrical- it lost some speed but had a more forgiving stall.
      A lot of AA1s have been upgraded with a bigger O320 engine, 150/160hp rather than 108.
      If you have an early one with the "fast" wing and an upgraded engine, it's more like a 172 in performance (though still 2 seat of course). That's sort of my wish-list plane :)
