Brrr 🥶…..you described the cold from the rain and wind perfectly. Had me shivering in sympathy. ☺️ But when you were on an actual bike path, it looked wonderful! And cycling near the water looked like so much fun! I love your helmets where you can remove the brim when you want to. What a cool option. 👍 Thank you for the maps at the end. They really help visualize where you are. Hope the sun has come out this first day of June and that you are warm and dry tonight. 👍

If I were to bike-pack again, I would add some front paniers (in addition to my handle bar bag - for maps, etc). I had to leave my tent at home because my bike did wheelies when I put the tent on the back. I shared a tent with the person I was riding with, but when we split up, I had to go buy some plastic to make a tube tent. Luckily, the coast of Calif does not get much rain in October. Happy Trails.

1998 when my friend and I rode across the US we ordered bicycle maps from Adventure Cycling. Of course, nowadays everything is probably available on your phone but the maps were a lifesaver. We took the northern route, Hwy 2 through Montana and North Dakota. In Montana there were wide shoulders but you had to cross a rumble strip first, and they had semi trucks that were pulling two trailers behind them. By the time you got to the last trailer we were being sucked into the wheels so we would just yell truck and bail off our bikes.

If you don't want to buy a bike computer, you can set Google maps on your phone to bicycle instead of car and it will give you a bicycle friendly route. I used it once to ride my bike home 18 miles from the car mechanic to my house and it routed me 8 miles on my local bike trail. There are some really nice bike computers now though.
I have ridden the Cascade to Palouse trail a few times from Issaquah over to the Columbia, but now they have opened the bridge, so you don't have to detour onto I-90. In eastern Washington it is not complete, but once you get into Idaho it's nicer, although you would be riding the Hiawatha section from bottom to top if you go that way. It's not as steep as the roads are.

  • @RusselynConnor
    @RusselynConnor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Sounds like a real challenge. And you rose to the occasion yet again!! You never fail to inspire. Once you're over the Cascades, you should be leaving both the traffic and rain behind! The Palouse is a wonderful stretch.

On the one hand the scenery was once again spectacular, although there were parts that I'd feel uncomfortable on with the traffic and narrow shoulders. On the other hand, listening to you describe the hard parts and other challenges I can see this is no walk in the park. In spite of it all, keep up the good work.

I’ve been watching you for several years now, with my cyclist husband watching for the last year. He’s joined me on two of my hiking trips out west and is hoping that watching your adventure will inspire me to join him on his cycling trips. I’m hopeful that earning your long distance cycling legs is about the same as earning your hiking legs. Beautiful country!

You should probably be coming into some better weather. This Spring has been a tough one…so much rain and cold. By now you’ve probably made it to the P2C Trail. I hope the snow has melted after the Snoqualmie Tunnel. You will possibly need to divert to the road after Ellensburg. The P2C (after the Renslow Trestle is quite sandy). What I would recommend is getting on the Vantage Hwy to the Columbia River (and the town of Vantage). Then take Huntsinger Rd back to the P2C to go across the new Beverly Bridge. From there, again, the P2C is going to be difficult with the width of tires you are running. You might prefer the road. If you are looking for a place to camp in Beverly, you can go a couple of miles to Beverly Dunes Recreation Area. It’s free, but there is no potable water (there are Sani-can toilets), so get the water you need in Beverly.

I know you guys know what you're doing, but I can't help myself and have to recommend a blinking taillight. Drivers can just see them from so far away. Your colors are nice and bright, but in that dim rainy weather a blinking light just grabs the attention. They cost next to nothing and the battery lasts forever on LED. Anyway stay safe out there! Love the lampshade, that made me laugh!

This all sound pretty hard! Roads can be a pain. One thing I learned from riding a bike in the city, I grew up in Brussels, is to ride in the middle of the lane if there's no bike path on the side. That way cars have to slow down and go around you. It avoid fast cars passing you way too close at full speed! It might work on the highway as well, when there's no bolder...
    Keep going and stay save!
    All the best! Kaat

Amen to that. Now if it will just stay in the 70's thru the summer and NOT go to 90 or 100's again. Our snow pack was at a scary 80 percent April 1 but has made an incredible leap to to 114 percent and thank God it was an across the state benefit! • @pinecone50

It takes real talent to hit rain in Sequim, the sunny, dry spot in Western Washington. Last year we stopped having rain in April. We haven't had a rainy, cool spring like this in 10 years or so. As nasty as the Hood Canal Bridge is it used to be worse before they rebuilt the older half. I did it only once and was scared to death. On my return trip from Port Townsend we had to wait for the bridge to open for a submarine (the Bangor Naval Base is to the south of the bridge). I asked some people waiting with a pickup truck if they would take me across and they did! Next big challenges are getting out of the congested Edmonds area and testing those legs over a Cascade Pass. Looks like you might be doing the John Wayne Bike Trail over Snoqualmie Pass. Good luck.

Thank you for videotaping your adventure. I was debating if would be less expensive to pickup a bicycle at the start of a cross country ride rather than shipping one. In my case maybe training up on my 10+ year old bike then just purchase a bicycle at the coast. I think figuring out gear is the hardest part of any journey. Urban navigation by bicycle, would Google Maps on a smartphone work.. You are great at getting started. Thank you again for the video, it really helps to get to see someone adventuring when obligations are keeping me in one area.

You are experiencing one of the wettest Mays in a long time, not that it is unusual to have rain in May, or June, or ? I worked outdoors in that weather and the secret is to not expect to be dry, but try to just get damp and not wet. Start out with dry feet...and embrace the weather. Pretty soon you'll be on the dry side but we're getting a lot of rain also. Must embrace...You will be dry again.

Enjoying your new adventure. Do distance bicyclists ever use a bike trailer to carry gear and would that make a bike more stable than using panniers?

I wanted to ask if those brims keep the rain off your glasses because my experience is I can’t
Wear sunglasses in dark cloudy rainy days like that and I have to wear prescription glasses so is it hard to keep rain off glasses or do the brims help? I also get terrified of UNcool motorists but you both are plugging along and making adjustments. Thanks as always for your great attitudes and educating us on the realities. I would love to ride some of those trails!

I think you two are doing great 4 days in to it! Do you think the calorie count will be more than on the though hikes? Is it basically the same foods as you carried before? Is there more town food available?

Sorry it was so wet on the ODT. Usually much nicer this time of year.

Love the video. Looks like so much fun. Kristy, Can you tell me where you got your rain/sun visor for your bike helmet?

Google Da Brim and you can order on line. Some bike shop carry them too.

At 1:06 there is a cute dog sitting by himself next to a bench on the left of the screen. A mystery.

Kristie do you have a pulse oximeter with you. They are very small but your breathing isn't what it has been on other trips I realize biking is harder than walking but you really need to keep a check on your oxygen levels. It's tiny and will fit easily in your backpack and not take up much room. better to be safe than be in the boonies and something happen and Annette has to leave you to go for help. Why yes I am a worrier. why do you ask? Seriously take care and don't over do.

Hey, have you considered a bike trailer? My brother rode cross country 3x on his bicycle The last 2x he used a bike trailer.

I like trailers. I used one for commuting and when we rode the Katy Trail. It's still a possibility. Thanks for the suggestion.
