      Thanks so much Rod - Alot of people don't realize how much work it is to set up at a show - especially for a memorabilia dealer - card dealers have it a little easier - figured I'd document it this year

    Great booth...it's funny all the modern card people want your type booth gone since alot of them got shut out this year and couldn't set up

    • @vintagesportflips
      @vintagesportflips  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks - The key to a great national is a diversity of booths - something for everyone. I'm all for more dealers in there, but I think the way for that to happen is to cut down on corporate space - not get rid of corporate space of course, but have them make more efficient use of a smaller space - However it's very tough for new dealers, with no previous national setup experience, to get onto the show floor regardless. I've also seen some of the modern dealers set up with nearly nothing in their booth except for advertising for them buying - that doesn't add much to a show in my opinion.

    • @vintagesportflips
      @vintagesportflips  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah....I did and my wife did the National in Cleveland probably about 15 to 18 years ago. We did it twice...we are local ....and NO we don't deal in sports anything. We made money...twice...not a huge amount...but it was reasonably profitable. That attendance then...wasn't like it is now....a lot more folks seem to attend this show nowadays Booths were about $850 or so I recall at the time. I hate to imagine what they are now. We do use the "U" set-up...like you do...however, I see the main problem is that you have that table in the middle. That causes problems as the tiny aisles formed by that are tight...especially for overweight men with back-packs (not that there ARE ANY of those types of attendees at this show! Ha!) Interesting...as sports involve athletic prowess....ie. lots of exercise. Sometimes when people see tight aisles like that...they don't come in as it does NOT look inviting. You might try a less wider table if possible (it would probably have to be custom-built though). Believe it or not 3 to 4 inches less width...can make a difference. I see that your internal booth aisles are so tight...that someone has to "back" out to let someone else leave. Not the best traffic situation. Just my opinion.
    You are smart as you seem to have a WIDE variety of items....and you carry cheap stuff. Cheap stuff is the way to go. MOst people at shows aren't there to spend 40 grand. We specialize in items as cheap as $5 on up to whatever. The cheap stuff will pay for the hotel, gas, tolls, booth, etc....and the mark-up is typically BETTER. Years ago, we only carried high-price items...and we found ourselves twiddling our thumbs through MOST of the show. We learned and have PLENTY of cheap shit for sale. It pays off...and our booth is often quite crowded. Suggestion for this show - dump the card cases and get a less wider middle table...I mean really, did you really DO that many card sales? People there at the National specialize in that shit...and it doesn't appear that you do...which is smart...as you have VARIETY. I dunno..maybe you DID do a lot of card sales......if so, then I guess it was worth it to have the card cases.
    Now it looks like you were able to sneak in the shirt racks on the end of your booth - smart...very smart. You used every inch. Hope those shirts are EXTRA LARGE....(based on the clientele) You also carry LOTS of flat stuff...also good (that's ALL we carry), takes up less space then 3 dimensional objects -smart..
    Getting to meet Utubers?......Hell, most of those "people" I wouldn't even LET in my booth IF it was up to me (I won't name names). YOU however, seem like a normal, decent human. Love the fact that you brought your old man to help out.
    Suggestion regarding Utubers....If they aren't spending money...don't waste your time talking to them when you should be focusing on real customers.. You are there to MAKE money...yes I understand the "camaraderie" bullshit - BUT you have well over 3 grand invested in this thing. Yes- I enjoy chatting with good customers who have supported me at shows in the past...but, I am there to make money and GAIN new customers too. Another rule - get people in...and get THEM OUT after they've spent money with you....throughput my friend, throughput. Chatting is okay..but your booth is tight...get THEM out ASAP.
    I see you gave discounts - smart...don't argue over $5 bucks when you have it for $25. You give folks discounts - they COME back. I 've seen dealers who are NOTORIOUS for NOT giving ANY breaks....and their booths are EMPTY and then you have to hear them bitch and whine that the show "sucks". I would suspect you have discounts for VOLUME deals. We have saying in our booth - "Better to wholesale....then NO SALE"...THTA methodology brings customers...and dealers BACK. And yes...we do shipping to ANYWHERE too.... We also do layaway...I'm going to assume you have the brain to do THAT too as you seem intelligent. You should have been writing up receipts..so you can restock...assuming the items WAS replaceable. I'd be gathering EVERYONE's email...so you can EMAIL people before you do a show. In fact, we send out an email before every show and offer a 10% discount on anything you buy from us IF you attend and come to our booth. My point? Ask people in the email what are they looking for...otherwise, you might not bring it... Congrats on the Negro league sale....
    And yes...I've been dealing and doing shows since 1990 so I know what I'm doing. In fact....I'm presently experimenting with a few new ideas to get MORE inventory displayed.....more on that later as I perfect my idea.
    Ah yes..teardown....no one understands that UNLESS they've been behind that table/booth and have done a big show. Never fun....and if you have a BAD show...the ride home is a LONG one. On the reverse, a good show leads to a quicker ride home. Yup....3 days of selling...and a week of ibuprofen afterward......Good vid by the way.
