Hey Shane! I appreciate that you did such abusive testing on the S!Ks. I have two of them and they are incredible. I would be very interested to see your sharpening process. You mentioned it in a separate video and how much you enjoy sharpening. If you’re looking for content for your channel, I’m sure many would benefit from your sharpening technique
@@shane4176 Hey Shane. 2 years later and I’m back watching this old video of yours again and I saw my comment from before. I’m sorry to have left you hanging I have seen your sharpening video where you go over your convexing technique. You are a skilled sharpener. Freehand is no joke. Consistency is hard. My second gen 3.5 will be arriving in a couple of days. Have you looked in to that one yet? I remember you saying in another video how well you liked the 2.7
@@willfitzsimmons8955 yes im really wanting one of those new gen, 3.5's. Im sure ill find one soon on the secondary market. Thanks for watching ive gotten into knife making so I haven't done much on the channel lately. You can check out my work on Instagram @sobforge or sob forge on Facebook.
Im not sure how high u can heat treat the 20cv but if u get it professionally treated higher than what survive does it, i bet that knife does the same test with no damage at all.
Any chance you can measure the thickness behind the edge for both knives? I wonder how that F1 steel would hold up if it wasn't a convex edge with a very thick grind profile... ;)
I no longer have the survive but I can check the F1. I did thin that edge down on my waterstone so I feel if it was a thicker Edge like the survive knives it would have held up fine.
Some awesome testing you have here and in your other videos. Thanks taking the time to do so! Did you expect the 20cv to hold up better than this or is this expected from a stainless steel?
Xtian yes I think the chip that occurred was something we expected "could happen". I'm still using the knife and like the steel so far. It's certainly doesn't have the toughness of 3v. But seems to have great wear resistance. Thanks for the comment.
Great Work!!! I Was Gutted When I was Merely Stripping Some Thistles With My Cpm 3v Knife For the Horses and Within a few Minutes There Was Rapid Galvanic Type Corrosion That Ate Into the Edge of the Blade!!! Even the Mora Carbon didnt Pit at all, just got a patina! Considering How Good 3v is im guessing its this Rapid Type of Reaction That has Prevented A Lot of Manufacturers From Using It!?
Well a lot of corrosion depends on how high a grit the steel was sanded to. It sounds crazy but it matters. But for the most part 3v will stain and rust but it is better than 1095, or like o-1. I haven't had any problems with it to speak of.
As far as 3V goes I don't think much can come close to Suvive! Knives. They spent a good deal of time and focus on cpm line of steel especially 3V. They get it sent out to a heat treat specialist, Peter's Heat treat. They worked with them to develop the best heat treat protocol they can get for what they wanted. As far as 20cv even though it's not meant to they got heat treat on it that you can beat on the knife as if it was a high carbon dispite it not being that kind of steel. Hard to match Survive with their tuned in heat teatments.
Walter Liao I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Both super good premium steels. I can't say for sure but S35vn may be a bit easier to sharpen. CPM 20cv probably holds an edge a bit longer. But not so much that you or I would be able to tell. As long as both steels have good heat treat they will be very similar. 20cv is basically the same as m390.
bro!. when you took them beautiful knives to the steel-plate !!!. wtf!. you broke my knife heart!. hehe. hurts to watch 😂. but thank you sir, for testing em!.
Haakon Sandvik man you dont know how hard that was to do! I've never done anything like that before. But we all just needed to know. I'm pretty impressed with the lineup so far. I want to do a bunch more edge retention testing against other knives i have. No more of this though unless it's someone else's knife haha.
Survive! Knives are Scammers I ordered a Survive! Knife March 2016 and I haven't received it yet. Every time I ask them when I get the knife, they say soon. There are a lot of others (100-1000) who are in the same situation and talk about it on Blade Forums and elsewhere.
Yeah it's sad this goes on they are great knives but terrible customer service. I've always bought in the secondary market. I would never order from survive. I'm sure you'll get your knife................. Eventually!
You have some awesome knives my friend. Thanks for sharing
You are very welcome thanks for watching

Thanks RCB. Was there any tip damage to either knife after stabbing it through the metal sheet?
Neither knife suffered any tip damage at all, very impressive!
Hey man .... your pants are dope ! Where can I buy those??
My dad grabbed them for me at a rifle shoot a few years back. But they are just army surplus I think you could find them on eBay.
@@shane4176 sweet thanks! I'll check ebay

Wow, this test is very useful. Thank you. CPM-20V is super steel somebody says. But, is it far more better than S35VN?

How about some First edge 5050 elmax
themahonster man I thought I knew all the major knife companies. Never heard of this one I'll have to check into it.
