    I’ve viewed your video at least twice, just to learn the twining technique. Been trying twining with other size of reed, but definitely have to adjust. It took 2 months to finally get my #1 and #3 reed, so finally started this smaller basket…. Looking nice so far… plan on learning weaving with different materials… just harvested grape vines. Bonnie

      I'm glad to hear it! Weaving with grape vines will be interesting. I enjoy making grapevine wreaths.

    Thank you. That was a really good and clear tutorial. Sadly I'm in the UK and this round cane is not easy to get hold of. Could you suggest an alternative material? Many thanks.

      Any very pliable cordage would work great for this application. I imagine something like garden twine or jute would be too flimsy. But some type of twisted paper or natural cordage. Raffia, grapevine, kudzu come to mind.

    Just found your videos. You are a great teacher. I tried to see your list of basket tutorials but it states page not found. Have these been deleted and are you still doing basket weaving videos. Thank you

    This is the first video of yours I have watched. I have some foraging baskets I want to make and this will serve as some inspiration to get moving. I just ordered a catalog to purchase some reed to get started with. I also have some ash logs and will make my own ash splint at some point. In the meantime, I will keep myself entertained by catching up on all your videos. It's a pleasure listening to you. Thanks for the videos. I also subscribed and hit the bell!

      Bob,
      It sounds like you have some great creative adventures ahead! I have never made my own ash splints, its something I'd like to try someday. I hope it goes well for you!
      I noticed you comment on another video, thanks for working through my videos and for subscribing! It's great to have other making enthusiasts share their projects and inspiration with me here.
      Happy weaving!

    Hello, I am new to basket weaving. Your videos are very helpful! I'd love to make the garlic basket, do you think i can I use #2 RR to weave and #3 RR for stakes? Thank you!

  • @christinehaslam9480

    Hi.. Just found your channel... Awesome!
    My ? Is, how do you know, how long to cut the stakes at (when you begin)?
    I watched your napkin vid. I understand that you would measure the object (that you want to put in the basket) but how do you know, how much additional reed you will need, to make the sides?
    Thanks so much😃

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words, here's an explanation to determining stake length - I'll write it out from the beginning, just to be sure we're on the same page:
      To determine the length of the stakes, you will need to consider the height of the finished basket, the depth of the basket, and any additional height you want to add for a handle or decorative elements. Once you have an idea of the height and depth of the basket, you can calculate the length of the stakes needed by adding twice the depth of the basket to the height of the basket.
      For example, if you want to make a basket that is 10 inches tall and has a depth of 5 inches, you would need stakes that are at least 20 inches long (twice the depth of 5 inches plus the height of 10 inches).
      It's also important to consider the amount of ease or flexibility you want in the finished basket. A tighter weave will require shorter stakes and result in a sturdier basket, while a looser weave will require longer stakes and result in a more flexible basket.
      Ultimately, the length of the stakes will depend on your personal preferences and the desired outcome of the basket. It's always a good idea to start with slightly longer stakes and trim them down as needed during the weaving process to achieve the desired result.

    hello. I'm new to weaving. I only have number 2 round reed. can I use that for the while project?

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! Having a reed that's a bit thicker for stakes is nice because then they are more sturdy. But using a #2 round reed won't make that much of a difference. Have fun!

    How long does the no. 1 round reed need to be?

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ohhh, I don't have an answer for that question. I usually use round reed from my scrap box. Tuck the reed ends neatly behind another row and you can splice in smaller lengths. I like to make these as little gifts when I have a pile of leftovers.

    May I please ask how many millimetres is a number 1 and number 3 reed? I am from Australia.

    • @TextileIndie
      @TextileIndie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A #1 round reed is 1.5mm and a #3 is 2.25mm.
      Here's a table from basket makers - I've only noticed mm called out for round reed.

    Would you say that 1lb of the #1 makes 1 basket?

    • @TextileIndie

      1# will make 6 or more of the little garlic basket.
      Does that help?

    You call them stakes, Others call them spokes, like on a wheel. Nice work there Missy.
