  • As Jesus entered Jerusalem the crowds spread cloaks and branches on the road, shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Hosanna in the highest heaven!" We can deduce from these actions and words and the quotation from Zechariah that they were anticipating with great excitement and joy the arrival of a messiah who would establish a kingdom of peace. Dr. Tom Boomershine tells and comments on Matthew 21:1-11.

It occurs to me that Mark and Luke say Jesus is riding a "colt that has never been ridden" = that is, not saddle-broken, hence Jesus' impressive ability to ride it. Could it be that he is riding the youngun and it's Mom who is trailing behind? (Of course, Matthew is literally following the poetic form in Zechariah that surely wasn't intended literally, but two ways of identifying the same animal.)

Could be! Thanks for your comment--always interesting!
