The reality of OWNING A SAILBOAT! - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 290

  • Imagine taking your house into a harsh environment, shaking it around and dousing it with salt water. How much stuff would break? Then move your house hundreds of miles from the nearest hardware store and we find out just what it takes to maintain an offshore sailboat.
After 1 week of hard labor the projects are coming along nicely, but there is still an endless list of that needs tackling. An upgraded lithium battery bank installed, refrigeration compressor and cold place replaced, and of course the damn toilet decided to back up in the yard and cause a disgusting mess and I'm forced deep into some really shitty work, LITERALLY!!
If you're curious about the LiFePO4 batteries check the links below:
    Battle Born (USA) - battlebornbatt...
    Transporter Energy (UK) - www.transporte...
We're also continuing our search for the best eco-friendly bottom paint! The paint we used is not currently available to be sold commercially, however if you want to check it out visit www.magicantif...
Hope you enjoyed this episode showing the less glamorous part of what it’s like to won a boat. And also Brian’s summary on how to save some serious money on labour.
Much love from from us! Kazza, Brian and little Sierra

I just started watching your videos like last Friday. I’m not nearly caught up! So I started after Sierra came onboard. What a good natured child! Great job parents! There is a common thread in these videos. One of which is how you keep running into such wonderful people. Friends forever in the Bahamas. Now this one. #290? All of these amazing, generous people. Ryan. Wow! Just wow! And Bill is around and he stood in the same space while you pumped out (and gagged) the toilet and then he ran the cans outside! I laughed so hard. People helping you paint. In the heat! I think you pay it forward a lot ! Much appreciation for your mad skills at pretty much all you do! Very impressive. 👍👍

Don't know why but I find these repair videos to be extremely satisfying and interesting! I guess because it takes a somewhat glorified experience and brings it into the daily realities of mobile living. And I guess, too, the truly satisfying experience of being resourceful, capable and creative.
Thanks so much for not leaving us out of this part of it! Lynn

I've followed you guys for years and it never fails to amaze me how intelligent and resourceful you all are in the way you craft the work you do on Delos, from mechanics, to painting, to sewing and sail repairs, to electrical, to refrigeration... to everything needed in order to make your sailing life well, doable. And that doesn't even address the sailing part of your life adventures, which you do so seamlessly. And it's so amazing when such an incredible "tribe" of people simply show up to help you accomplish all of what is needed to be done. And then you do all of this while being perfect parents to such a beautiful child. What a beautiful example you two are for her, and what a wonderful and full life you are building for The Lil' Nugget. She will most certainly absorb all these life lessons to become a completely capable adult and sailor, fully appreciative for the life you've given her. God bless you all and thank you for sharing your incredible life with all of us. Boy, I just realized how many times I used the words incredible and unbelievable. Incredibly unbelievable, huh?

Just bought my first boat... A 1991 Catalina 34 and she was a bit neglected over the last few years. I've got her in dry storage up in Anacortes, WA and have been working on the fresh water plumbing system. The awkward working spaces comment certainly rang true with me! Thanks for doing the yard videos. I love all the sunsets, cocktails and of course boobies, but the yard videos are some of my favorites. Cheers Delos!

    SV Delos crew,
I loved the last two videos. Ive been watching for a couple months trying to catch up from the days of Brady and Josje, and I find the videos that sit in my mind are the less glamorous videos. I enjoy watching the videos showing the work that has to be done to upkeep the boat, including the rigging, electrical, paint, etc.
I would love to see in the future a video showing routine checks that are performed while underway, as well as routine checks that are performed while in harbor.
I hope one day when my children are grown to become a salty sailor and leave the landlocked life behind - because the videos you provide show your joie de virve.
    With love from Arizona

Ahoy Tribe! As you probably realize by now we're keen to continue testing and evaluating products that we find interesting. In this video we continue to test the LiFePO4 cells provided by Dragon Fly energy. The batteries are incredibly awesome, and we've tortured the hell out of them since installing them. They run our entire boat including electric induction cooking and oven! In fact, there is nothing wrong with the bank we removed! We were just asked to continue torture testing their latest version of their integrated BMS. Our old batteries, which are still warrantied for 10 years will continue on powering our friends at Sailing Calico Skies.
If you'd like to learn more about the batteries we use and the system please check out the following links:
Battle Born Batteries (USA) - battlebornbatteries.com/?afmc=svdelos_bb77
    Transporter Energy (UK) - www.transporterenergy.co.uk/partners/sv-delos
    Lithium System Overview - svdelos.com/lithium
Also a quick recap on our eternal search for a good performing eco-friendly paint- The paint we put on in Grenada coupled with the Sonihull Ultrasonic system performed as specified. The Sonihull does an amazing job of keeping hard growth off, and the SeaCoat VX10 does a nice job as long as you are able to move frequently and with speed. However when we sit for extended periods and explore we do experience a lot of soft growth. A more detailed review can be found here: th-cam.com/video/4nhwYkQiQbc/w-d-xo.html
This time around we're going to keep the Sonihull system as it works great for the hard growth, but we're going to try another paint with two biocides (Econea and Zinc) instead of traditional copper to fight the soft growth. The paint is experimental and not currently available for purchase, however if you'd like to research more please visit www.magicantifoul.com/
Fair winds, and hope you are having a spectacular day! Capt. Brian

Yeah, Sierra know what the word Amazon means. Just look at her smile. So precious. When she celebrates a big (16th? 18th? 21st?) birthday, graduates High School or college, she is not going to be embarrassed by the pictures and videos you will certainly share with her guests. We should be so lucky to have such beautiful photos and videos of our childhood.

Nice video.... suggestion on electrical safety: Next time do all secondary load connections with the pos or neg battery lead disconnected so that sparks do not fly. When working with batteries, use taped up spanners and tools so the bare metal tool cannot short the Pos and Neg of the Battery, remember Batteries can explode and the shrapnel and chemistry can blind you or even kill you. Wear gloves when working on bare wires, do voltage checks before touching wires....... take great care....... big cheers, P&F, Sechelt, BC.
