People vary in their intelligence, ambition, ability to delay gratification, agreeableness and propensity for risk. These traits are all heritable, with intelligence having a very high heritability of around .8 in adulthood. Someone born into the lower class with a high IQ is more likely to end up middle class than someone born into the middle class with a low IQ. Randomized shocks in wealth do not lead to lasting shifts in the status of familial lineages. A genetic etiology of social status is denied due to political and ideological reasons, not empirical ones.
Love Aporia!...just discovered it. Clark is obviously right...our destiny is determined by our ancestors accomplishments in mating and warfare. It's not fair but nothing in biology is. Nepotism, legacy admits, tribalism....all these things our ancestors did for a reason...the genes are the most important thing. "It's in the blood"...as they used to say
Great interview, interesting topic. I've listened to a number of Greg Clark interviews on the genetic transmission of social status and am surprised that so few people ask him about the actual traits or inherited behaviours that might undergird his 'G-factor' of social status. They ask about the measures of high social status - income, wealth, education, etc. - but not the qualities that seem to lead to these outcomes. Above average IQ seems to be one. Clark has also mentioned envy, drive, flexibility, materialism, patience, and risk tolerance in other places. Would the trait of needing to gain or maintain high social status be one? What would that boil down to? Status anxiety? Are some of the traits simply abilities that capitalism rewards? And would they still be the winners if society were organised differently? What, I guess I’m asking, makes the winners tick?

I have been enjoying the production and creative choices recently. Well done.

Genuinely glad I'm not the only one with these perspectives. Great segment!
With a background like that, if this video started with the camera focusing in, one could say this was an excerpt from a well-produced documentary.

i don't understand if g is such an important factor in everything in life then why aren't we finding ways to increase it?
Status? What is it? Can you measure it and how? I understand capital but status sounds like filler for money
I cant measure it, but my brain recognises it. And so does yours.
Logical incoherence is a pain
