Johann Baptist Strauss II also known as Johann Strauss Jr., the Younger, the Son , was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. Some of Johann Strauss's most famous works include "The Blue Danube", "Kaiser-Walzer" (Emperor Waltz), "Tales from the Vienna Woods", "Frühlingsstimmen", and the "Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka". Among his operettas, Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron are the best known. Strauss was the son of Johann Strauss I and his first wife Maria Anna Streim. Two younger brothers, Josef and Eduard Strauss, also became composers of light music, although they were never as well known as their brother.
Arthur Fiedler was an American conductor known for his association with both the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops orchestras. With a combination of musicianship and showmanship, he made the Boston Pops one of the best-known orchestras in the United States. Fiedler was sometimes criticized for over-popularizing music, particularly when adapting popular songs or editing portions of the classical repertoire, but he kept performances informal and sometimes self-mocking to attract a bigger audience.
The Boston Pops Orchestra is an American orchestra based in Boston, Massachusetts, specializing in light classical and popular music. The orchestra's music director is Keith Lockhart. Founded in 1885 as an offshoot of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the Boston Pops primarily consists of musicians from the BSO, although generally not all of the first-chair players.[1] The orchestra performs a spring season of popular music and a holiday program in December. For the Pops, the seating on the floor of Symphony Hall is reconfigured from auditorium seating to banquet and cafe seating. The Pops also plays an annual concert at the Hatch Memorial Shell on the Esplanade every Fourth of July. Their performance of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" is famous for the unfurling of the American flag that occurs as the song enters its final moments. Identified with its long-time director Arthur Fiedler, the orchestra has recorded extensively, made frequent tours, and appeared often on television.

This reminds me of a BBC Promenade Concert Viennese Night I attended as a Promenader in the '70s: the first part of the programme featured Berg, Schoenberg and, I think, Webern. This was a challenging first half, but the ably-drafted programme notes guided us listeners sure-footedly through the arcana of these modern pieces, well worthwhile. The fun began in the 2nd half, with a copious selection of Viennese favourites, and a "lollipop man" holding up a sign saying "Sway", and, flipping it round, "Stop", for Promenaders' "orderly" accompaniment of the orchestra. Among the Promenaders were some students from the Royal College of Music, across the road from the Royal Albert Hall, who repeatedly and obscurely heckled some members of the orchestra during the waiting times. 😀

The music of the Strauss Family survives until the present day, and right smartly, too. A number of years ago, the Denton [Texas] Community Orchestra did an Old Vienna program, with plenty of room to dance, too. Strauss Waltzes can still hold the dance floor, and they create a tremendous amount of energy. The Strauss music was originally meant to be danced to at dusk till dawn concerts, with a break at midnight for everybody to hit the buffet. The monarchy loved music as much as the common folk, and encouraged music and dancing. Made everybody happy, and kept their minds of politics, too.

Most recordings of Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops are in high fidelity sound in those days so the amount of background hissing noise is reduced to minimal.

I remember this piece because in 1968 took me to see 2001: A Space Odyssey. The most memorable musical accompaniment on a voyage to the moon. The lunar landing was only a year away. At the end of this epic film, we see an embryo floating in outer space, again, The Blue Danube was playing.
I should have noted that it was my now deceased dad who took me to a special screening in Cincinnati, where he paid the then outrageous price of $3,78 per ticket! You can't even get popcorn for that now! I was absolutely blown away by the movie, and I obsessed over it for years.

У моей старенькой мамы была традиция- слушать и смотреть( позже) концерт из Венской филармонии, она обожает вальс "На прекрасном, голубом Дунае" и марш Радецкого. К сожалению, последние годы это невозможно, из- за санкций. Я включаю музыку Штрауса, когда работаю на кухне, мама сидит рядом. ❤❤❤❤

Si nos fijamos aquí, casi siempre ponen las Marchas, las Polkas, y los Wallzs Más Conocidos, pero si os fijáis por un momento en Claudio Abbado por ejplo, además de que era y fue un Genio, y un Director tan Extraordianrio y Sonriente, que Toda Criatura de Dios, quería oírle, le son extremadamente agradecido, ¡¡y con su muerte!!, llenó ¡¡No Sólo la Scala de Milán por dentro, Sino que Anduvieron las Gentes llenando las Plazas y Bocacalles colindantes a la Scala de Milán, sino también en Florencia. Es decir, Un GENIO, una Persona Extremadamente Sonriente, incluso "pasando la cueva" por aquel problema grave que tenía de estómago, y que iba adelgazando, aunque en uno sus útimos meses de vida recuperó algunos kilos de peso!!.
Bueno, y volviendo a Claudio Abbado, recuerdo que tanto el Año en que anduvo de Director en el Concierto de Año Nuevo, y aquí viene lo curioso, ¡¡Siendo una Obra Compuesta por Johan Strauss, Interpretó la Cuadriga de Verdi, ¡¡PRECIOSO!!, que siendo fragmentos de Cuatro Óperas Preciosas de Verdi. Johan Strauss las introdujo bajo el Compás y a la velocidad de un Wallz o Marcha, y todas, a una velocidad o mejor dicho, a un compás algo más pronunciado de lo que realmente se percibe mientras estamos escuchando dichas óperas como son: La Traviata, Rigoletto, Un Baile de Máscaras y otra más que no recuerdo, pero que son Extraordinaria.
También recuerdo Cómo en un Canal Alemán que tenía su Sede en Berlín, el Unitled Classic, en donde retransmitieron distintos acontecimientos de muchas voces de Ópera, y en donde las 6 ó 7 voces feminas, ¡¡Unas Sopranos Extraordinarias de los 60 y 70, cantaban "De Gloria"!!, y los demás eran todos Varones que eran Voces de Tenor y Barítonos, y con quienes Claudio Abbado lo disfrutó como popularmente se dice, ¡¡como niño con zapatos nuevos: ¡¡A Lo GRANDE!!!!, y tras terminar dichas representaciones de distintas Óperas, y todas de Compositores Italianos, nos hizo unos añadidos Extraordinarios con Músicas italianas y austríaca, y ésta, la Cuádriga de Strauss fue ése año cuando la conocí, y eran Fragmentos Musicales de Óperas de Verdi como: Rigoletto, La Traviata, Un Baile de Máscaras y una cuarta que no recuerdo. Claudio Abbado llegó a la Filarmónica de Berlín en 1992, y tomó posesión de la misma tras morir Karajan el 9-11-1999, y lo que pidió fue que no le permitieran dirigir la Filarmónica de Berlín, a Claudio Abbado, su competidor, y resulta que lo Fue, y la Filarmónica de Berlín, y en concreto la Orquesta Cambió los Registros, y se pasaron a oir cada uno de los instrumentos de la orquesta, con lo que la Acústica y la Música Resonaban por todos los ángulos de la Filarmónica. ¡¡Y LLegó Claudio Abbado😂, como mejor regalico a Karajan 😂😂✌
A todas ésas músicas de Verdi, Strauss las introdujo algunos cambios, como en los empalmar unas músicas con otras y sin perder ni el compás ni sus registros, en sus músicas y en compases más acelerados y, con algún cambio que se percibe, y tras tocarlo Claudio Abbado, resultó ser ¡¡ALGO PRECIOSO!!.
Desde luego y antes de terminar, sí que diré y digo que: Atendiendo a cómo a través de un Director Extraordinario de Orquesta como Claudio Abbado, para relatar con quién oyes una Cuádriga que hasta entonces no se oía, la oyes de manos de Claudio Abbado y además, ¡¡en qué Representaciones y Cómo!!, y resulta que además, reflejas más acontecimientos y anécdotas que han sido reales y, con las que se disfruta y mucho. La palabra española "Cuádriga", para ponerla a lo italiano, tendríamos que cambiar la C por la Q, siendo Quádriga de Verdim y es de Strauss (-Jr). ¡¡Podían incluirla también en las Grabaciones de Strauss (-Jr).

I noticed that the notes say this is from 1940 vinyl. Sounds more like 1960 vinyl. Maybe from RCA's famous Red Seal label? At any rate, this is the golden age of the big northeastern orchestras, who could eat little European orchestras for in-between-meal snacks. Fiedler and the Boston Pops were certainly of this category.
The "Radetzky Marsch" wasn't composed by Strauss II as far as I am concerned.
