Signal Overlap in NMR Spectroscopy

  • In the ideal world, if a molecule has five distinct groups of protons and carbons, the NMR spectra will show five resonances, with the protons showing perfect whole number ratios. In the real world ... well, things can be a bit different. Here we look at the problem of signal overlap, which works to reduce the expected number of resonances, while inflating some of the expected integrations. We look at some of the common examples where signal overlap is observed.
