Thanks for this video, its so hard to find someone that says it's ok to use table salt in aquariums. I talked to an experienced aquarist and he told me that he's been using table salt for freshwater aquariums for 20 years with no problems. You just need to take care of the dosage. So, again, thanks!
Iodine is a vital mineral for human health and people that live in areas that a deficient in it, really suffer bad health. The good news is that we only need a microscopic amount and the amount added to salt is tiny. I’d be more worried by the anti caking agents. Nicely covered in the video Dan. 👍🏻
Love this, and love the fact that table salt dissolves SO much easier in the water than the aquarium salt! Just hoping I don’t have to find The Walmart to purchase it. 😳 Maybe add bulk table salt to your Amazon storefront?? Also, Joker was perfection through the whole video. 🫶🏽🐠 #salty🧂
I know you made this months ago but I appreciate the video. I think one of my fish has dropsy and put salt in, then suddenly panicked that I used the wrong salt and was going to kill my fish anyway. 😢 seems like what I did was okay and hope they make a recovery
i usually just get the pickling salt its just pure salt no additives no anti caking agent its super cheap it’s 1$ for 4lbs im sure you’re right and the additives don’t effect the fish but the pickling is the same thing for the same price so why not just play it safe and get the pure salt
Yeah, someone else point that out. I'd never seen it before. I don't use salt enough to worry about it. I just get a container at Walmart when I'm there.

I noticed it at an early stage and was wondering if i can use salt baths with table salt and if they are going to help my fish.

Mostly use sodium bicarbonate here Dan, since the livebearers I keep like the higher pH and TDS anyway. Good for their neurological system and maintaining water's electrical charge, IMO. I've used table salt before with no problems, BTW.
The biggest issue with salt is grain size. One teaspoon of table salt is far more "salty" than a tablespoon of a more chunky salt such as aquarium salt or ice cream salt, or even kosher salt for that matter. I have always used ice cream salt but I agree that table salt would do just as well. You would just need to watch the dosage.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly If you weigh a teaspoon of coarse salt and a teaspoon of table salt you will be very surprised at the difference. But like you said...it's probably not critical.

And it doesn't matter that 3 teaspoons of table salt is exponentially more potent than 3 teaspoons of rock salt. Don't worry about your inverts, live plants, scaleless fish or anything else because the "salt man" says it's OK. LOL!!! Is that really the advice you want to give a new hobbyist? You and I agree that table salt is probably fine. Where we absolutely disagree is that I say dosage makes a difference. What also makes a difference is that table salt will dissolve into the water super fast and can absolutely have ill effects on sensitive fish or plants. Whereas chunkier salts will dissolve more slowly and be a little easier on the inhabitants. Have a great day!
I’ve been trying to grow brine shrimp to feed my fry, last time I didn’t have very much aquarium salt so I used iodized salt and they came out better than ever however I’ve been a bit hesitant to feed my fish with it because I don’t know if the water will hurt them. After your video I decided to go ahead and try. So far so good. I’ll have to wait and see.
That's really interesting and handy to know as those questions were always there but now I actually know they are irrelevant. I've never really used salt much to be fair, but years ago I did buy aquarium salt for some reason I cannot remember. Thanks for that info Dan, great stuff !...........Just looked on ours and the caking agent in ours is sodium ferrocyanide.
Hello I have a 20 gallon tank with 4 guppies and 1 clown pleco. Just noticed they all have ich. I turned temp up to 79 and added 4tb spoons of table salt to tank. Will it help kill the ich?
In some cases it helps certain conditions, or treats external parasites. In other circumstances it's used to relieve stress on the fish while it's dealing with an illness. And it can be used as an electrolyte in soft water.

Hey , I purchased “natural sea salt” and the ingredient is only salt. The brand is Morton’s and it is table salt. This salt has no anti-caking agent!

Shrimp are naturally high in iodine, so I know it won't bother them.

Negligible. Makes no difference. It's a tiny tiny amount.

A water change and clean tank along with a salt bath will help. A bit of salt in the ttank isn't a bad idea either. (1 tsp per gallon max)

That's a good point about grain size. It really doesn't matter that much tough. It doesn't need to be precise measurements.

What level are your tank lights on ? high,med or low?plants look great 😊
Most of my lights are just flood lights. Some are on dimmer switches and run at about 33%, but the others are just "on".

No, I'd get Ick X. even if it's not Ick (there are some look-a-likes out there) then Ick X will probably still treat the condition.

No, it's not the same as "marine salts"
Can I use epsom salt in my aquarium or these only use in bath for the fish?
I'd only use it for baths.
