Dead ass. A young woman and her ghost twin sister trying to run a bathhouse in a small town sounds like an EXCELLENT premise for an anime or manga tbh. Wait... this was an hour long?? I watched this for over an hour??? Damn, jacksepticeye really took an hour of my life without me knowing. 10/10, would time travel again with Sean
Japanese trivia (and a few story explanations): 4:59 The "light saber" the monk used is called "gohei/御幣", which is a "wooden wand, decorated with two 'shide/四手' (zigzagging paper streamers) used in Shinto rituals (to bless or sanctify a person or object)". 6:23 Those wooden plaques (usually depicting the zodiac animal of the year) are called "ema/絵馬", and are used by Shinto and Buddhist worshippers to write prayers or wishes (they're purchased from shrine attendants, so they're a way to contribute to the shrine). 17:22, 22:23 Yeah, it's possible those flowers were a part of a "roadside" memorial, which marks a place "where a person died suddenly and unexpectedly". The radio (at 9:32) talked about a 29-year old woman who disappeared, so maybe it was a memorial for her (if she's now presumed dead and was last seen at the bathhouse - the newspaper at 1:11:12 seems to confirm that). 22:20 That yellow tape said "entry forbidden, please don't come in" (立入禁止,入らないでください), and was probably set by the monk. 29:11 That sign said "work-in-progress - entry forbidden" (作業中 -立入禁止), and was probably set by the protagonist (Maina) herself (after the incident in the bath). 33:33 "Yakiimo" (焼き芋) means "baked sweet potato", so Imojiro ("imo/芋" means "potato", and "jiro" is a name suffix for males) was just shouting to attract potential customers. 1:09:18 "Omikuji/御神籤" is a fortune slip, usually bought at a shrine (and chosen at random from a box). 1:13:11 "Ubume/産女" are birthing woman ghost (yōkai) in Japanese folklore, thought to appear when a woman dies just before, during, or shortly after childbirth (with the anxiety for her child preventing her spirit from passing on). It looks like the monk killed a woman because she was pregnant with his child (he even asked to keep their relationship a secret), and that's how she became an "ubume". After that, they (the landlord and the monk) tried to kill even more people (Yoko and Maina were the first two sacrifices, and Erena was gonna be the 3rd) as part of a ritual to get rid of the ghost. The grown up man you found in a pillory was possibly the monk's son (who was being whipped at the start of the game), since the monk's note at 1:14:32 said that "she had a boy - I thought I killed her before she gave birth", and that he held off on killing his son.
@@ThisIsCSDX Good question! There doesn't seem to be any specific clues toward that plot point, so I guess we can only speculate about it. Maybe Erena forgot about her as a result of PTSD, or maybe she was made to forget by supernatural means (either Maina erased her memories so she wouldn't suffer thinking about her death, or maybe that was just a consequence of the Ubume being dealt with). Two other theories I've seen (but that seem less likely) involve Maina never existing in the first place (which would imply the memory of a "fake sister" being somehow implanted in Erena's memory to make her come to the village and be the last sacrifice, but I'm not sure how that could have happened) or Maina's existence being erased when she was killed as a part of the ritual (which doesn't line up with Yoko also being killed but her grandmother - Matsuno, who was mourning her at 17:22 - still being able to remember about her).
Personally I found this one to be the creepiest of the Chilla's Art games so far, with or without the ghost elements. I didn't think this was scary because of the ghosts, but because of the situation the main character is in. Because there's elements of nudity with no real privacy, the lack of choice, the poverty, the creepy landlord who's also your boss so he basically has complete control over you, that creepy guy who was probably a sex trafficker or something like that, the fact that everyone in town seemed to be weird, creepy, or not like you, so you had no support system... at least to a woman or someone who's got a history of sexual abuse, this game is definitely the creepiest, I think. At least with the coffee shop game, it's in a public place, it feels less like some small backwater slum where you're trapped and far from everyone, and not *everyone* feels dangerous. The stalker is creepy but it feels like there's somehow less danger of sexual assault and more of just regular assault.

Chilla's Art never fail at making games so eerie and uncanny that literally every character is a suspect. The way the characters look and move so unnaturally makes it seem like any of them could literally kill you at any moment. I adore these games!
This was my favorite. This one is more for people who understand the mythos and culture of Japan. The priest was making a specific yokai, an Ubume . The bad ending released her into the world. The good stopped the ritual, and Erena's sister protected her from returning by taking her memories, so she would not go back. The evil monk got a woman pregnant then killed her during child birth. The baby lived though it and was who was locked in the basement. The monk couldn't control the ubume. He, with the help of others in this apparent ghost village, was trying to sacrifice 3 women to control the Ubume. For someone who grew up in Japan knowing the legend of The Ubume, I am sure it is very terrifying. It is kind of like our western cultures Lady in White, or the Spanish La Llorona. A Banshee might be the same kind of feeling for you, Sean. These legends of ghostly women, in a world where woman still don't have many rights and seem to be losing rights, hits a sad note for me. These legends speak to the violation and fear that women face from the world as a whole, and often our only way to find justice is in tales of horror.
I’ve never understood why the West is so damn uppity on sexuality but at least it makes for good psychological horror. (It does mean lots of mental trauma from being both autistic and male and actually wanting company)
@@theshermantanker7043 -looks at a story which clearly plays with and emphasizes gender- "not everything is about politics." youre embarrassing yourself.

Love how each chilla's game change the type of horror they make. they made the closing shift a real fear of stalkers. and made it realistic that "oh a man cant just pop up behind you and scare you". while in this game the game literally just throws "HERE HAVE SOME JUMPSCARES! YEET YEET YEET" my heart cant take it
A more cynical person would say that closing shift was an innovative game that put effort into its scares while this game was a unclear mess of unexplained lore with a bunch of cheap jumpscares
seems they're trying out different things and not boxing themselves in! also, idk too well beyond Jack's playthroughs, are they just one person or a small team or something?
@@mimsydreams truly! I kinda agree that this one wasn't their best work, and some of the jumpscares were a bit easy to predict (wouldn't call them cheap, but that's my opinion), but I very much respect that they're trying to do different things within the horror genre! always looking forward to more chillas art

*For anyone sensitive to lighting effects!* i came across a comment asking if there's any flashing/strobe lights in this game & am gonna paste my response here for anyone curious. So 1st off, *there AREN'T any bright flashing strobe lights in this game that I found!* at worst, sean's editing at 1:32-1:37 involves quick image changes w/ a shaking screen for a split-second, so that's the biggest "flash" that takes place, but even that has no sudden bright lights inserted. *so if your only concern is bright flashing strobe lights, no need to read any more of this! The rest is a list of very small lighting effects featured in game!* Everything on this list is likely too little to be bothersome, but hey idk, maybe i'm ignorant to the full scope of all the triggering/bothersome light-effects, so might as well mention what i saw. (someone pls comment if u think i overlooked something) a) _super minor, weird angle_ (4:58-5:02) : the guy we're speaking to waves around a bright white staff. Due to the angle we're positioned in, the staff ends up taking up the entirety of the screen for a moment; this technically causes a sudden lighting change as the screen turns the bright white color of the staff during that brief second. b) _overall scene lighting_ (pause @ 12:12 for example of lights) : The bath house areas where customers bathe *have bright beam-lights with foggy strobe-light effects to portray the room as steamy/humid. these lights do NOT flash.* I'm only mentioning them bc strobe lights disperse in a similar "foggy" manner when cast. pretty sure that component to strobe lights dont bother ppl, but doesnt hurt to mention it. lights turn off at one point but don't flash. c) _water simulation_ (one example: 14:42) : the game gives a first person view anytime the character showers. *I dunno if the game's depiction of "water" streaming across the screen is an irritable lighting effect,* if so, just skip whenever Sean starts a shower (he'll always mention beforehand) d) _editing_ (35:13) : an editing effect of Sean's. the screen *quickly goes from game, to video clip, to game again,* dunno if flashing to a different screen is bothersome, but it doesn't involve any sudden bright lights- it's all the same dark lighting, just a rapid screen change. e) _light change_ (47:24) : *the lights suddenly turn from blue to red before fading out.* I don't think it's enough to be irritable, it's more of just a color change than it is a flash. f) _lights moving around_ (47:29) : a small girl has a cluster of red beams of light spinning around her. These lights move around her at rapid speed. they do not flash, but *if beams of light moving around at a fast speed are potentially irritating, this is when they start* -- albiet they only take up a small area on screen until the timestamp below. g) _lights moving around, close up_ (from 47:41 to 47:56) : a close up of the girl last mentioned, she now takes up most of the screen. so again, *if the lights moving around fast are potentially irritating, this is when it takes up most of the screen* That's everything I thought could qualify as any sort of lighting effect! Some of this may seem goofy to even mention, but my whole life i've had these nasty type of migraines that get set off by some of the most simple little light tricks / types of light., so i know little things can sometimes mess you up haha. hope everyone has a great october!
You are so amazing!! I have epilepsy and although my sensitivity to flashing lights isn't as severe as others, I'm so appreciative of this! Thank you:)❤
10:27 When I'm very tired, I get auditory hallucinations, and they sound EXACTLY like this. I've always had them and I'm pretty chill about them now, and this the first time ever I have something to compare mine to and show people when I try to explain what it sounds like. Neat
Ehh...thats not normal unless your staying up for multiple days on end without sleep....id get checked out for neurological issues if im being honest...
It’s called hypnagogic hallucination, they’re dream like hallucinations that occur when you’re falling asleep or very tired. They come in varying forms, physical, visual and auditory, its very common, I think one of the most common experienced is the sensation of being weightless and flying/dropping just as you’re falling asleep.
the closing shift stands as my favourite as well coz it's just a much more unsettling type of fear that anyone can relate. sure, ghosts/spirits and curses are just as unsettling and scary but the likelihood of experiencing something like that irl is considerably low for most people - while being stalked (and possibly murdered) is something that can very easily happen to anyone in today's day and age, and that kind of fear really takes root in ya.
See, I see it as if it’s a person, there is always a way to fight back/attack/unalive them. If it’s a ghost, well… there’s only so much you can do depending on the type. For me, ghosts are more terrifying 😅

I feel this game would work a little better if it some moments of either bizarre levity (the sweet potato man was great), or calm pleasantries. Still have off-putting events, like the child blaming Maina for sticking his hand in the fan, but juxtapose that to some bonding or kindness from most the villagers. Lean into it a bit. Make it feel a bit like Kiki's Delivery Service meets Animal Crossing, start settling in, maybe find tiny decorations for your apartment. Imagine finding a cute picture to hang over the hairy hole in your wall, only to wake up and find it missing with more hair the next day. Imagine fishing for offerings, only to suddenly fish up a clump of hair, with Maina commenting some scalp is still attached. Imagine being able to help some of the villages with small errands, only for them to start commenting later they don't like the look in your eye after the first time you're jumped by Yoko in the baths. Imagine having a very pleasant bath the first night before things heading south after. Imagine. Being. Able. To. Pet. The. CAT. My point is, it helps if the player 1) has a baseline for normalcy and 2) has an attachment or reason to care about things going south. I know a lot of people don't like Silent Hill 4, but it was easily the most terrifying for me to play in the game. Not just because ghosts are the scariest horror 'monster' to me. It's mostly because Henry's apartment is a safe space for the first half of the game. Sure, it's his prison, but it's also where you can get away from the chaos, heal up, store your shit, people watch, unwind a bit before climbing back through the hole into hell. The slow invasion of that safe space is horrific. Suddenly, you have no where guaranteed to be safe, and if you're not careful, it can become a hell you dread returning to as it is overrun with hauntings, draining your health, making returning worse than trying to soldier on. It's brilliant. The first half trains you to feel comfortable, the second half tears it out of your weeping fingers. It's dreadful, and I love it. That would make this game perfect, imho. Make me dread losing my shabby room. Make me care about the wellbeing of the villagers. Lull me into a sense of security, then turn the world on its head.

Japanese trivia (and a few story explanations):
4:59 The "light saber" the monk used is called "gohei/御幣", which is a "wooden wand, decorated with two 'shide/四手' (zigzagging paper streamers) used in Shinto rituals (to bless or sanctify a person or object)".
Holy, nice job dude!
If I may ask, how did she forget about Maina?
@@eye502 Thanks! It did take a while to put that together.
Two other theories I've seen (but that seem less likely) involve Maina never existing in the first place (which would imply the memory of a "fake sister" being somehow implanted in Erena's memory to make her come to the village and be the last sacrifice, but I'm not sure how that could have happened) or Maina's existence being erased when she was killed as a part of the ritual (which doesn't line up with Yoko also being killed but her grandmother - Matsuno, who was mourning her at 17:22 - still being able to remember about her).
tysm i love seeing breakdowns like this
Personally I found this one to be the creepiest of the Chilla's Art games so far, with or without the ghost elements.
Me personally I found the atmosphere of Radio Station to be creepiest

*For anyone sensitive to lighting effects!*
i came across a comment asking if there's any flashing/strobe lights in this game & am gonna paste my response here for anyone curious.
The rest is a list of very small lighting effects featured in game!*
Everything on this list is likely too little to be bothersome, but hey idk, maybe i'm ignorant to the full scope of all the triggering/bothersome light-effects, so might as well mention what i saw. (someone pls comment if u think i overlooked something)
a) _super minor, weird angle_ (4:58-5:02) : the guy we're speaking to waves around a bright white staff.
*I dunno if the game's depiction of "water" streaming across the screen is an irritable lighting effect,* if so, just skip whenever Sean starts a shower (he'll always mention beforehand)
d) _editing_ (35:13) : an editing effect of Sean's. the screen *quickly goes from game, to video clip, to game again,* dunno if flashing to a different screen is bothersome, but it doesn't involve any sudden bright lights- it's all the same dark lighting, just a rapid screen change.
e) _light change_ (47:24) : *the lights suddenly turn from blue to red before fading out.* I don't think it's enough to be irritable, it's more of just a color change than it is a flash.
f) _lights moving around_ (47:29) : a small girl has a cluster of red beams of light spinning around her. These lights move around her at rapid speed. they do not flash, but *if beams of light moving around at a fast speed are potentially irritating, this is when they start* -- albiet they only take up a small area on screen until the timestamp below.
g) _lights moving around, close up_ (from 47:41 to 47:56) : a close up of the girl last mentioned, she now takes up most of the screen. so again, *if the lights moving around fast are potentially irritating, this is when it takes up most of the screen*
That's everything I thought could qualify as any sort of lighting effect!
Some of this may seem goofy to even mention, but my whole life i've had these nasty type of migraines that get set off by some of the most simple little light tricks / types of light., so i know little things can sometimes mess you up haha.
hope everyone has a great october!
thank you so much for this!
You are so amazing!! I have epilepsy and although my sensitivity to flashing lights isn't as severe as others, I'm so appreciative of this! Thank you:)❤

"i hate people" me who works in retail: we say this 40 times in a minute.
