There's a lot going on in this run and it can be really confusing if you don't know what's going on. To explain stuff, I have an FAQ here pastebin.com/1CPXWwmy as well as a fully commentated demonstration run of this route here th-cam.com/video/wHZGiJD2KNk/w-d-xo.html
You inspired me to speedrun about 9 months ago when I first started watching you, and I never thought I’d be where I’m at now. Thank you so much for just committing to this, I don’t think you realize your true impact. I’m starting to stream and do speed runs and commentary but besides that, watching you has been fucking awesome, I’ve watched you grind your soul out and learn new shit constantly as it comes up and you’re honestly just such a beast dude. Keep grinding zfg we all appreciate you, congratulations on the run ❤️
I remember a long time ago chat asking ZFG how low he thought hundo could possibly get, and he said he thinks "there's a hard cap at 3:30:00", and now here we are with a run having broken that hard cap estimate
I hadnt watched ZFG's OOT Speedruns in months until today and now link's flying in the air and F BOOTS are a thing. I wonder how extreme ZFG's Speedruns will ever get. Always an incredible pleasure to watch someone master a game so much.
Im in the same boat, his first sub 4 hour run was the last one i saw, It makes me wonder if sub 3 hours is possible. I mean we never thought we could get sub 4 or even sub 3:30 and here we are. Im sure in a couple years itll be like 3:10 or like 3:05 if not sub 3
It’s been awhile since I’ve watched a 100% of this game and I definitely don’t remember the witchcraft around 13:00! Awesome stuff and good job on the WR. Keep it up ZFG!
@@amibeingdetained3417 Six months late, but yes! Yes I do! This trick is called Stale Reference Manipulation, often shortened to SRM. When Link picks up an object, like a rock, the game targets that actor's data in a specific spot in memory and apply's Link's positional and rotational values to it. This is what the 'Reference' in 'Stale Reference Manipulation' refers to. Normally, when an object Link is holding is unloaded, the game ends Link's carrying state and lets him walk around as normal. However, if you buffer picking up the item until after the item has already been culled or unloaded, Link can run around with nothing in his hand. You'd think this wouldn't change much, but this bit is incredibly significant. Link is still applying his positional and rotational data to that reference in memory; the reference is stale and the data is being applied arbitrarily to an actor that doesn't exist. Better yet, if you clog up memory in a certain way, you can push other pieces of data into that reference and arbitrarily apply Link's positional, and more importantly rotational values to whatever's been pushed into that slot. This is the 'Manipulation' part of 'Stale Reference Manipulation.' The reason ZFG drops a fish on the ground, drops bombchus, et cetera in the Lost Woods is to do just that: Clog up memory in a specific way so that he can arbitrarily apply Link's rotational data to, for example, his Equipment screen. The value "f" is applied to his boots, for example. These f-boots have no gravity value assigned to them. Link's walking animation is sped up dramatically, but this is an unintended side effect of having glitched data applied. Side note on f-boots: 0 Gravity means that if Link gets hit by something that would launch him, he's completely inactionable until he hits the ground, which in this case is never, so the end result is a softlock. The reason jump slashing allows you to go down is because jump slash has a gravity value hard-coded onto it. Anyway, here's why this allows Link to get like half of the items in the game: When you run into a rupee or a Heart Container, you pick it up. The game looks at the data of that actor and gives the corresponding item of that data to Link on the same frame. So far so good, right? Well, by using Stale Reference Manipulation in Zora's River, you can change the properties of one of the nearby actors loaded in memory, like a Butterfly, to match the sort of actor type that Link can pick up and interact with, like a bush or a rock. Runners use this to pick up this butterfly and bring it to a specific place in Zora's River and set it down to modify even more data in that Butterfly. This time, they turn the butterfly into the same kind of actor type as a rupee or a Heart Container. This is the complicated part. On its own, applying this actor type to a butterfly either wouldn't do anything or would crash the game, I can't remember which one of the two. Neither is the desired result, regardless. Instead, runners figured out a way to have it so that the game takes the value corresponding to the position of an active bombchu running across the wall in relation to the screen or camera and applies that to our new item-giving actor. Because the butterfly isn't scripted to disappear after giving Link an item, it continues to happen several times in a row, every single frame possible. That bombchu running across the wall has a completely different positional value every single frame. For this sequence of events, the values being applied to the butterfly's item data happen to line up with half the shit in the game. In summary: If the item Link is carrying doesn't actually exist, Link can arbitrarily apply his rotational data to literally anything else currently loaded into memory if it's pushed into that place in memory. This includes actors, and if you can modify an actor, you can make it give you items.
pretty sure this was the run i fell asleep to last night. great stream. can't wait to see link return to his home planet in the highlight video in like a week lol
Amazing tricks and precision. It's nice that Lost Woods is so central now because it has always been a unique area and it makes sense for it to have the most interesting tricks. 23:57 was so crazy.
Love seeing these PBs coming in. Really happy to see you back in the saddle after all the glitch discoveries and routing changes kept you from running hundo for so long.
There was an older run where you showcase a tasbot that was supposed to be a human theoretical run? Just something super damn close to what a human can do. And this time knocked that time out of the park by nearly 20 minutes. You’re a fucking legend
Come on... how can this game be this broken yet still playable? It's like watching corruptions except in the game itself and for the benefit of the player... Madness! The absolute glory of Ocarina of Time.
honestly such an inspiration to me, seeing the time you commit to this and the hard work and so many others put in is insane, keep on trucking man, you are amazing!
That's the deku scrub that gives you the slingshot bag upgrade for shooting the target 3 times, it just happens to load at coordinates 0,0,0 for 1 frame when that room loads.
1:51:49 weird 3rd slingshot didn't register Edit: Did it somehow hit that particle that is larger on the target during the mini cut scene it's in the middle right where the slingshot shot looked to hit and they both are glowing and look the same, or even better is that particle the slingshot shot suspended? 1:52:03
Dose anyone remember playing this for the first time and being lost and confused. Taking forever. Sitting with other kids in the lunch room at school writing down instructions with pad and pen and giving to their friends so they can finally figure out the water temple or where they could find the steel boots. Helping them figure out how to get the big goron sword. Or where to find all of the heart pieces. Or how to get through the dessert without dying. It was mind numbing how big the game seemed at the time. It was by far the largest game for that Generation of consoles. And now it has been reduced to a game that can beat in under 4 hours. Or even less depending on the category. It's just crazy.
Terminal Montage needs to make a new animation for this speedrun, it would be hilarious to see Darunia's reaction to link appearing out of nowhere in front of him XD
I have never seen Link flying around in the air the whole time :D is there a website where all this bugs he uses are explaind? I have not played Zelda for ages, but would be nice to mess around a litte :)
I think balanced represents the difference between sum of best and PB, but spread evenly across all the splits. So if ZFG's best individual split for the Dampe section is 1 minute faster than his PB in that section, balanced would take that minute time save and divide it up across the whole run. It's a better way of seeing how far ahead he is, smoothing out the peaks and troughs of individual splits.
Wait so jer doesn't pickup the regular smol hook shot from the dampe race? What's the rule on collecting stuff? Do you only need to have the final version of the item?

truly monumental
@@FortuneTellher my friends.... it happened
And what’s crazy is he could get it lower with a smoother Adult section.
Our boy never stops!!! Well, gee, thanks ZFG for killing my hopes of going to bed early tonight.
same, I have work in 6 hours and this kills 3,30 of my sleep
Same lol
Hundo needs to be faster so he can kill less sleep
Oswald Of Carim wtf
@@rogerklotz7737 yea i was tired af but worth
I'll never understand why I enjoy watching the same exact thing, but a few minutes faster for over 3 hours
Dang I'm there too
I'm in the same boat my man. I'm just fascinated with how fast people can do this. Plus it's my favorite game of all time.
*remembers when sub 4 hours was the golden standard*
Damn that wasnt even long time ago 😫
you uploaded this 10 minutes before i finished watching the last one, delicious and good

Could you stop breaking world records FOR FIVE MINUTES
At this rate, he's gonna have the WR down to 5 minutes
I can't believe I actually left this stream at like 58 minutes into this run LMAO

Why would you leave, tbh

If people can discover these crazy ridiculous glitches (I mean Link is literally floating ffs) then I'm certain there's a cure for cancer out there

Yes

Do you only need to have the final version of the item?
Yeah, only the highest upgrade is required, so you can skip hookshot as long as you get longshot.
