As a leftie I'm still bitter about the Link switch

When I was a little kid and first learned to write, my mom and dad who were hardcore nintendo fans were ecstatic to see that I was left handed. I never understood why it was such a big deal but my mom would always tell me she never knew a single person who was left handed, and legend of zelda being her favorite game. She was just so happy that her son was the same as her favorite video game character. Next thing I know I've started playing Nintendo and played every legend of zelda 😅

As a left hander I can say that we have to learn to use right handed stuff all the time.
I use the mouse with my right hand, despite being left handed, for instance.
I have no idea how to use left-handed scissors because I just got used to right-handed ones.

I learned my whole life to get used to the mouse on the right, which leaves the keyboard for my dominant left hand for the keyboard. Far easier a combo to me! Plus, it leaves my left hand free to write notes or draw at the same time as using the mouse!
(I also have leftie scissors to leave out as revenge for any righties who may need them!)
In fact using right handed tools is a leading cause of death for left-handed people. How weird is that we die all the time cuz you filthy right-handers won't just let us have our own tools
When Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword came out, as a lefty I was so excited to play a motion control game with a left-handed protagonist. I was so mad when I discovered to my dismay that not only did they make Link right-handed. They didn't even offer a left-handed mode!
They flipped the entire game world of TP from the Gamecube for the Wii version just to make Link right-handed, but didn't let us un-flip it??
You'd think that all games made for the wii would have the option to swap handedness as a requirement or something
I just played TP with my left hand anyway. I was so used to playing Wii games like that, so I just did it anyway. I'm struggling with Skyward Sword though because I have it on Switch and I can't do the same thing with the joy-cons.
I'm still mad about it. And still mad that BotW continues to take left-handedness away from me.
But why would they need the excuse of Link being ambidextrous if it's a different Link in each game? Couldn't they just say that some were left handed, some were not?
it's supposed to be the same soul, which makes it funny that the first Link to bear that soul was a righty
I think there are some exceptions; like I think Wind Waker Link is just some guy who happened to be in the right place at the right time (or the wrong place at the wrong time depending on how you look at it).

@@digitool5944 Skyward Sword Link is ambidextrous. He uses his sword in his right hand but fires his bow like a leftie. The sword part is likely a consequence of being a trained knight in a school that probably only taught right handed sword skills.
Now that I think about it, that's actually a better excuse for BoTW Link being right handed; he was trained like that.

Im fine with him being ambidextrous. The only thing that bothered me was in Majora's Mask. Link is Left handed in the game with all the masks but when he wears the Zora mask he plays the guitar as you would if you are right handed. It doesnt make sense to me. It's probably just an oversight by nintendo but, it's just bugs me. It's like that in both the 64 and 3ds versions tho so, idk haha
The GanJiCiAn, considering the masks holds the soul of the person giving all their skills and abilities to Link when he puts the mask on, Link might of gained the preference if the Zora played the guitar in his right hand while he was alive. I have no clue if the Zora was a right handed character though, took me ages to notice Link was left handed since I don’t pay attention to stuff like that.

Haha and like John Klein said above that the Zora was probably right handed so that could also be a reason why Link plays the guitar right handed. Idk why it always bugged me tho. But thanks guys :)
@@theganjician9272 If I remember correctly, Mikau, the Zora who Link "turns into" when wearing the Zora Mask, played his "swan song" with his right hand.
Fun fact: Lefty fencers get similar advantages as lefty boxers! So maybe Riphiel gets the same advantages in universe?
And lefty tennis players too, because the ball spins different when u use left hand, so most righties need to train against lefties specifically to learn how to deal with the ball spinning different
And lefty basketball players are harder to block.
Since most people are right-handed, logic would dictate that, unless athletes trained specifically for and against left-handed opponents, they'd be caught off-guard. In some sports, it's either more common (baseball, for example) or less focus is placed on handedness (like basketball...handedness wouldn't really figure in too much), but in others (like boxing, fencing, and the like...often the one-on-one sports), it takes more training to be able to deal with a lefty (though it also takes the other person longer, as they've either got to find a left-handed teacher or change their style to take into account the training from a right-handed teacher (possibly leading to an ambidextrous style).

That scene explains exactly why a lot of swordsmen were bamboozled by lefties...not only would it have been harder to find a left-handed teacher, but a lefty would've been trained to fight against both types of opponents while most right-handed people would've been less likely to train against lefties. This is also why some swordsmen would search out different styles of combat...it makes you more of a threat and affords you some protection when you face off against a practitioner of that style.

It would actually be easier to flip the entire game on the y-axis than just Link. You'd likely have to change how Link reacts with literally everything because of hit boxes, hurt boxes, sprite location to activate things, etc. It would probably take much fewer lines of code to program all x-values in the game as opposite.

KickyFut i played solely the wii version, then the wii u remake came out. My mind was so off with puzzles and locations cuz everything was ‘flipped’. Lol

A not insignificant number of combat sportsman (and most likely old timey swordsmen) learn to fight southpaw because their opponents aren't used to it

Megaman.exe is right-handed on purpose. That Megaman is a program that has a human handler controlling them in a manner similar to how we control a videogame character. As such it makes sense that Megaman would use the same hand as his handler, Lan. In Battle Network 1, 2, and 3 Lan is right-handed and as such so is Megaman.exe. However in all subsequent installments Lan is left-handed. However since the Battle Network series reuses a significant amount of assets Megaman remains right-handed, including in the handheld spinoffs like Battle Chip Challenge. Wby they changed Lan's animations but not Megaman's is beyond my knowledge. Anyways, Megaman.exe is also right-handed in the animated show based off of the series. The only time we see Megaman.exe to not be right-handed is in the gamecube spinoff Megaman Network Transmission, which depicts him as being ambidextrous, using items with his right hand but using the megabuster with his left hand, the one and only time (to my knowledge) that Megaman.exe uses a megabuster in the southpaw tradition.
So yeah, Megaman.exe being right-handed is actually correct and entirely faithful to the series. It's actually a sign that they really do look for the tiny details that they noticed this instead of just assuming that he was left-handed like all other Megaman iterations are.
first thing I wanted to find in comments was this
it could also be inferred that Hub, Lan's Twin that died shortly after birth due to a lethal heart disease (HBD, if I remember correctly), could still have been right handed, as MegaMan.EXE is a NetNavi made with Hub's DNA and soul, and while it's never shown what handedness Lan's Mom and Dad are, there ARE odds, about a 21% chance, that both children will end up with different handedness (as you pointed out, in Battle Networks 4 and above, Lan switched to being left handed, while MM.EXE stayed righthanded.)

Except Megaman is (spoilers) actually a human being made into a NetNavi; specifically, he's Lan's twin brother.
To add to this, Geo Stelar from StarForce is actually right handed as well. His left hand becomes Omega-Xis while he is MegaMan, but in human form he is wearing his device (Transfer in the first game) on his left arm, so that he can navigate it with his right hand.
It also strikes me that this is the kind of comment a MegaMan fan would leave on a video. I'll see myself out.
It's something I think right handers never really think about, but being left handed really becomes important to those who are: The inconvenience of certain tools, pads and pens; the common surprise from right handers, who in the worst cases legitimately treat it like a parlor trick; the (thankfully no longer existing) prejudice and persecution of left handers evidenced in our history and etymology. Due to skewed proportion of left to right handers, right handedness is often seen as though it is the 'default', that we left handers are 'irregular'. Obviously no one has ever really had contempt for the hand I happen to use, but it's more common than I'd like that I'm referred to as 'difficult' or 'a nuisance' in a joking matter whenever a difference in dominant hands causes a problem, such as bumping elbows when writing, even though that's just as much the fault of the right hander.
It's not a big issue, it really isn't, but I think I'm allowed to hold a little grudge that things are this way. I really wish, like choosing gender or height or whatever, I could choose what hand my own character holds their weapon in. I wish link could stay left handed so I'd have that in common with one of my favourite heroes. I think we can relate to any character, regardless of differences, but it really does make me happy to see a cool left handed character, and it's just a selfish wish of mine that we get just a few more of them, and not because a game demands it, but because to be left handed isn't irregular, it's natural for so many of us.
Thank you for reading my entitled plea, I will now accept complaints about how big a deal I've made of it.

@@TheLastGarou I have found exactly one game with it, and it's minecraft. And arguably it makes more sense then, use left click for left hand, right click for right hand. I would have expected legend of zelda to have it be switchable, makes the control scheme a pain.
Sims includes left- and right- handedness.... though its not very obvious.... and also, I know what u mean, I was the only lefty in guitar class and the teacher always joked I was the weird one when he tuned our guitars for us...

While not a hero, Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII is notably left-handed.
Edit: Okay, y'all make good points about him being a hero throughout Crisis Core. Come to think of it, there are a few other Final Fantasy heroes who are left-handed. The most notable ones I can think of are Leon and Leila from FFII and Kain from FFIV.
Ah, but don't forget. He WAS a hero until he discovered the truth of his origin and was driven insane by shinra's betrayal and his mom waking up.

Fun fact:
'Sinister' actually means 'left' in Latin. Many villains in real-life old-timey stories and plays were left-handed because, like they said with Raphael, there was a stigma against left-handedness in the olden days. You can see where the etymology of the modern definition of the word comes from.
Another not so fun fact is that many schools, particularly religious schools, viewed left handedness as a sign of inherent evil which led them to mistreat the left handed. Including forcing them to use their right hand. Some people ended up ambidextrous. Some ended up paranoid schizophrenics.
By the same token, the Latin for "right" gives us the root of "dexterity": "dexter".

Most hand rod puppets are lefties. Because when you puppeteer, your dominate hand controls the mouth and the other controls the arms. So when you watch the muppets notice that most of them, with the exception of like Fozzy or Rolf because they aren’t hand-rod puppets, are lefties
And that's one more reason I dislike that Nintendo made Link right-handed in Breath of the Wild. It's not only disgraceful to left-handed fans, but it is also disgraceful to Miyamoto.

Funny story, I grew up left handed, but in high school, I discovered I had the capacity to be ambidextrous. Made my life a little easier.
But in regard to 3:00, I find that funny, because my dad is right handed. However, my mum was supposedly born left handed and forced to use her right hand because dated, religious beliefs.
So I wonder if that has any influence on my ambidextrity...

Link in Twilight Princess is both right handed and left handed, keep in mind, there are three main released of Twilight Princess, one on the Game Cube, one on the Wii and one on the Wii U, the versions on GameCube and Wii U had Link as a left handed hero where as the Wii version had Link as a righte because the vast majority of people are right handed.
Oh they missed Knight Artorias from DS1. He wasn't just an awesome badass, dude also sacrificed himself to save his pup.
@@PerezosaDormilona If you look at the cover art for PtDE, Artorias is holding his sword in his left hand. His sword also has a whole unique moveset of equipped in the left hand in DS2. He's left handed.

It's possible that Sir Artorias was actually right-handed, but his arm was injured to the point he had to use his left. Notice how his right arm hangs limply when you're fighting him.
I think you got it mixed up, Artorias uses his right arm, it's his left that's useless.
There is no real evidence from the first game that Artorias is left handed it’s just a fan theory. Dark souls 2 does state in his weapon it was always used by left handed people.

As a lefty, I often look to see who is, or isn’t, a lefty in games, so this video was a great one as far as I’m concerned. I will say, BotW Link being a righty really pissed me off, after so many years of his left-handedness. On another note, Aiko from Skies of Arcadia is Another lefty, in case you ever want to do another list.

Perhaps the Shrine of Resurrection turned Link right-handed as a side-effect. Or left-handedness may be frowned upon and Link had his left hand tied behind his back until he could do stuff with his right hand. The latter is also my explanation for Skyward Sword Link.

Concerning the guns, you would shoot with your left hand if you left eye is dominant. This is different from whether you're left handed or not.
Not necessarily. Some folks have a mismatch and still fire quite well, just a tad bit more slowly. I've got two members od my own fsmily that are right handed but aim with their left eye.
Additionally while it takes significant amounts of practice most shooters can eventually train themselves to use either eye proficiently with their dominant hand. Most just don't because it takes a ton of practice. You see it mostly among police and paranoid prepper types, not much anywhere else.

Normally most weapons are made so that the empty case is ejected to the left when fired meaning that most left handed people will just learn to shoot right handed to avoid being hit in he face with hot brass every time they pull the trigger
@@ckhirikasvoncpf6548 Most people's dominant eye matches their hand. A lot of people don't even realize that dominant eyes are a thing.
But not quite everyone. I think most people with mismatched hand and eye tend to favor their hand and train their eye, though. All you really have to do is close your dominant eye; if you've only got one open, that's the one that focuses even if it's normally secondary.

Whenever I encounter something that isn't designed for lefties I just learn how to use it with my right hand. Like playing drums, I didn't know how to play drums and the first drum kit I ever sat down at was configured for righties so I learnt to play drums the standard way even though I am a leftie. Maybe I'm closer to ambidextrous than pure leftie, I don't know.
I was once in a calligraphy class and was told that I could never be good at calligraphy because I'm left handed :/

Yes, contrary to common perception Link can speak, and any Zelda fan worth their salt knows this. In fact every time you are given a text box answer, whether or not there are multiple options, that is Link speaking. Another common example is where he is asked a question (usually his name), and after a brief pause they repeat what he said. Some examples from the games:
Skyward Sword - On two occasions Link is explaining something to a character, and his mouth is clearly moving while doing so.
Twilight Princess - Mayor Bo asks about Ilia and replies, "That ain't the answer I wanted to hear, Son."
Breath of the Wild - Too many to note as several text boxes use "I" as in "I'm Link." Sometimes there is only one option further indicating that Link is indeed speaking. Perhaps the most famous from this game is Zelda's journal entry about why he is so quiet.
In WW Toon Link says "Come on!!"

The reason why shevaa (or how ever you spell it) uses her left hand is because she is left eye dominant. I am a lefty but shoot with my right hand because I am right eye dominant. No hate I thought this video was cool as a lefty just pointing out you cant base somebody's dominant hand bassed on shooting expecaliy if they are experienced in shooting.

I'm left-eyed and right-handed but still shoot pistols with my right hand. And I aim with my right eye (more forcefully so when it comes to rifles). Guess what works best is dependent on the individual's techniques.

While not originally left handed, I think Dunban from Xenoblade Chronicles can still work here. While wielding the Monado at the beginning of the game in the battle for Sword Valley, the Monado's power completely messes with his right arm, resulting him to be unable to use it. He then exclusively uses his left arm for everything, including climbing and sword fighting for the rest of the game.
Yes Link CAN talk. In BotW there is either a journal entry or a memory (I cant remember off the top of my head) zelda says she asks him why he doesnt speak and he told her why. Look it up ya pirate

Or... play any of the games, where he clearly speaks. His dialogue just isn't spelled out word-for-word, because he's the player character and that's fairly standard.

Fun little etymology factoid: ambidextrous actually means "to have two right hands."

As a left handed kid trying to play videogames, I always felt somehow weird looking the gun/sword on my caracters. Of course I got used to, but from time to time, when I pick up some FPS or an RPG I think for a sec: ''wait, this is wrong'' then laughing a bit and get into the thing

IIRC Artorias is actually right handed, but he uses the left because his other arm is broken.

I never played any other Res Evil game besides 5, but I had huge amounts of fun playing co-op with mates on split screen, and the one thing that really stuck with us was the amount of times Chris and Sheva shout each others names as loud as they could, especially upon dying.

Or Bowser Jr. Nintendo has a lot of them because Shigeru Miyamoto is a lefty and he used to insist that there be left-handed characters. Link: the left-handed hero, being right-handed in BOTW is a disgrace; not just to lefties, but to Miyamoto: the guy who created The Legend of Zelda.
I can imagine there were some technological limitations when the Wii came around, preventing them from letting the player decide which hand would be dominant, but we've got to be past that by now. Let players choose their hand dominance for motion controls, and/or give us back Southpaw Link.

I’m replaying the game at the moment and I didn’t have nor am I currently having an of these AI issues with Sheva. In fact, she has saved my ass a few times by blowing away a horde with the shotgun. Only Resident Evil AI that drove me up a wall was Ashley’s in RE4... useless ass girl didn’t know how the fuck to run.

That's one of those behaviors that I've heard of, but I've never actually seen it. Just about every Sheva-bot quirk that's supposed to make singleplayer miserable hasn't turned up, for me. The worst she's done for me is try to stand her ground against monsters with instant-death attacks, on occasion.
Fun lefty fact: the word sinister comes from the Latin sinistra which means 'left'. So yeah we lefties had a rough go of it for a while what with having a devil hand an all...
Zelda's diary in Botw actually explains quite beautifully that Link can speak, but due to the pressure of being Zelda's appointed knight, and the preparation of the return of Ganon, he remains silent and and stoic to bear any burden laid upon him.
I don't always consciously notice when a character (from games, movies, or shows) is left handed , but I have found that I will be especially attached to certain characters for some inexplicable reason... And then later realize they are left handed. I guess I just subconsciously connect with them easier because I am also left handed. I always get excited when I realize that they are!
interesting thing about being a leftie, we are more often than not ambidextrous simply because we live in a world where everything is made for righties, we have to learn to use our right hand if we want to do alot of things.

MegaMan.EXE is an interesting case because even though his right hand is dominant for the most part, he's technically ambidextrous. Being a computer program, he's able to convert either his left or right arm into his Mega Buster as well as other weapons accessed via Battle Chips, and various official artwork has shown his buster on either arm
The Link thing was super interesting. Skyward Sword is actually my favorite LOZ game. The problem is, as a leftie AND a primarily PC gamer, I'm in a situation where the WASD default setup is geared towards righties, and I've had to get used to using a mouse with my right... And I had to adapt and do a lot of things right-handed. So the Link handedness switch, while a heinous betrayal to all lefties, wasn't a big deal for me to play.
...I think actually the hardest wii game for my lefty self to get used to was Okami. Sure, I can manage to hopefully swing my wii-sword in big movements for Zelda games, but then Okami comes and asks me to draw very specific shapes on the screen with the wiimote and my hand is like "uhhh what now?"

though she uses her right hand as Zero Suit Samus in Smash, not sure about the actual Metroid games, the suit was probably built with a left side arm canon so the wielder can still use their right hand for utility purposes
Roland Kramer The Varia suit armour she wears has its arm cannon mounted on its right arm. If she uses a pistol in her right hand out of her armour then she’s probably ambidextrous.

I think 100% of players would have been using the right hand to swing the remote because 1: It didn't require especially subtle movements and 2: you always have the control stick on the left and the Nunchuck was designed to fit nicely against the left hand anyway. Left or right-handedness has pretty much no factor on gameplay unless you're using just the remote vertically because we're all used to the standard configuration of a controller. (Apart from Orbulon's mini-games in WarioWare: Smooth Moves which swapped the nunchuck and remote around for left-handed players because you'd normally be using just the remote in your left hand. It felt so weird playing those games that way.)
