I love that you're willing to share both your successes and disappointments! Not everything works in our gardens the first time but like you said, it's a learning experience!
Definitely like the idea of using the 32" tall raised bed for the carrots. That way they'll not only have depth to grow but width area to bulk up in. Of course, drip will be a big help, too. As for the pipes, think I'd find some other use for them... just not carrot pots. 😊
Congrats on both harvest. 🙌🏻 Carrots: I know you said the size may be due to a watering issue, but what about fertilizing? I would thing giant carrots might need a lot of fertilizer? Sweet Potatoes: I personally would prefer smaller ones, because we use them a lot more for cooking, than baking. Just cut up those small one and throw them in the slow cooker with a roast or toss them on a sheet pan and roast or bake them with a chicken. Yum.
The garden hat is definitely the better choice than your ball cap, even if the cap was USMC--the garden hat will protect your ears. Takes a lot for me to say that, BTW--my Dad was Navy, served in the Pacific during the Korean War, & raised me to have great respect & appropriation for the Marines. Lord bless all the Marines who made sure my dad made it home safely & all our military & 1st responders who serve our nation--past, present, & future!!! 🇺🇸❤🇺🇸
5:58 I can’t stop laughing, that’s gonna be the funniest shit I’ve ever seen! I guarantee you nobody else has ever thought outside the box like that at the same time I’ve never seen a carrot grow like that before!
Wish someone had warned me about the difficulties of gardening w/ back & knee problems before I ever started gardening--I might have gone w/ raised beds from the get-go. Then again, they'd have had to tell me pretty early as my 1st garden experience was my 1st memory--sitting next to Grandma playing in the dirt while she planted flowers. It was very hot & Granddaddy filled his wheelbarrow w/ water & let me play in it to cool down. Years later, when I told Mom about the memory, her jaw dropped--apparently, I was just 6-months old!!! 😯 Guess I come by my gardening gene quite honestly. 😊
try 24 inch culvert black pipe 4 ft and shake it time to time to keep soil nice and loose i think your white pipes are too small and have zero expansion for it
WOWWWWW 🎉 awesome harvest. Hi 🤗🖐🏽 if y'all like radishes try daikons. They're supposed to break through our heavy clay soil and being the ever optimist 🤭 I thought it was a myth. Last August I just threw about 20-30 seeds by the back door because seed companies surely don't understand gray ugly Houston clay 🎉🎉🎉 I just heard a pickle can pop ❤ I digress. Our soil isn't even beautiful like the red clay of East Texas 😆 my farming roots. 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 would you believe I had HUGEEEEEE daikons and bonus, the leaves cook as a green. They're both spicy before cooking. My husband loved them both. Just wish I'd planted more. The spiciness cooks out & just taste earthy and mustard green like. 😬😂 but pickled the spice is still there. 🤣My poodle 🐩 Duke are swinging by north for sweet taters 🍠 he loves them. Y'all have a great weekend. I'm so happy for your harvest and jelly simultaneously 🎉
To prevent walking and compacting your soil in the raised beds, cut a 2x8 board, or what ever size you might have laying around, the width of your bed and lay it on top of the raised beds sides. That way, you can stand on the board above the soil and not compact it when sowing or harvesting.
How do you cure your sweet potatoes. I planted some this year. 1st time trying them. The vines and greens are beautiful. I cannot wait to see the harvest. It won't be until October. I got mine planted after the web worms died off.
@DownHomeBackyardGardening Thank you. I will look for that video. It is nice that we live in the same area so I can get local inspiration. I just started gardening this year, so you are my go-to channel. Thank you!
Those carrots are hilarious. I think a 1ft by 1ft wood box on top of the bed would work better than the pipes. I think I'll try that this year.
You grew coodles! Carrot version of noodles (zucchini noodles) 🤣
ROFLMAO!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Carrots are definitely more challenging!
I’ve been looking forward to seeing the finished carrots since you planted them! Gardening truly IS a big experiment, for sure.
Keep on keepin’ on! Those carrots 😊😆
I love that you're willing to share both your successes and disappointments! Not everything works in our gardens the first time but like you said, it's a learning experience!
I just harvested my first planting of sweet potatoes and man there are some massive ones!!

You're carrots maybe were too constricted by the tube. Experimenting is very informative for all of us, thanks.
Nice tater harvest! I like how you take something that didn’t turn out and make it a learn experience!
Excellent! It’s much too hot…take care
Very nice.
Those got really long lol.
I kinda want to try them myself. Nice sweet potatoes!
I like the hat
I'm thinking on the 2 foot carrots maybe let grow alittle longer and maybe bigger around size piping next time

They needed more space. Lol
BTW, on the bright side, I'll bet those carrots were reeeeeally tender. 😉😆

@teresaseggerman9402 That's a great idea, can't believe I didn't think of that💯💯🤗🤗🤗

I say run a side-by-side experiment if you can afford to do it I bet you but the only thing I have for currency as scarlet runner beans :)
Could you use those "bad" potatoes as new starts instead of composting them? Just curious. Be careful. This Texas/Louisiana heat ain't not joke!!
