      @@kmg1434 pretty sure it's the effect block on AxeFX. I think you'd be hard pressed finding an analog ring mod that has the range of control and modulation you can get from a digital model.

    As an Incubus and The Mars Volta fan Ringmods always interested me. When I got the gonkulator and got tired of playing the Glass riff over and over again, I tried experimented with that and, when you tune it correctly, it becomes a beautiful drone machine!

    My favorite use of a ring modulator is the Doctor Who Dalek voices ... EXTERMINATE!

    I like Jan Hammer's use of the ring modulator on Mahavishnu Orchestra's first album, The Noonward Race on The Inner Mounting Flame is a good example. John also did some amazing recordings later with a device called a frequency shifter, which is kind of like half a ring modulator.

    I’ll admit it - the Max Headroom TV hijacking of 1987 brought me here. It is widely believed that whoever did it used a ring mod to distort their voice, and I was curious to learn more about them and what they can do.

    Ring mods are crazy musical in the right hands. Jeff Parker, a fave of mine, uses that Moog for all the trem sounds you hear in his work; always with an expression pedal and to me it's pure magic, somewhat reminiscent of how an organ player uses a leslie, but not exactly.
    You didn't touch on the square wave of the Randy (my fave rm so far) - it's like a super choppy trem and can get "poppy", but that with an expression can get you into the ring mod zone or back into trem. With slid you can get cool synthy sweeps, like the mod wheel on a moog.

    7.07 very very useful information. RM Tremolo is a result of the pitch being brought under the range of human hearing.

    Love a ring mod
    my favorite use is to blend in and push other effects with it, mostly in parallel chains.
    They also make for an awesome tremolo

    Watched the whole video and I'm still asking myself, what are they good for? You demonstrated what they sound like, but maybe show some examples of how to use them in a real-life musical context? For example in a band, in the studio, live, genres etc..

    • @Stringjoy
      @Stringjoy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cool as it would be to get a camera crew and book out a venue, a studio, and a backing band to play with in all of those contexts, such things were just a *smidge* outside of our budget for this one

    The LFO sounds great on the MOOG when slow.
    The intro to Roulette Dares by The Mars Volta uses the moog with the sweep.

    The key to a ring modulator, that almost no one is aware of, it to have a foot pedal control over the carrier frequency, it is like WHA WHA, no foot pedal means your missing the point.
    This is foot pedal controled ring modulation on the Harmony Array Mbira
